This jeep looks like it’s parked in a farm shed. It’s hard to tell whether this is running or not. I can see some rust. It might make a good restoration project.
“1948 Willys Jeep, 4 X 4, with PTO wench and optional hardtop. 27,000 original miles, original stock condition. Call 503-663-6629”
Bruce surprised me today with some pics of a Fire Jeep. He noted that after reading the section that includes Fire Jeeps, he thought I might be interested in seeing a couple pics of Art’s Jeep. After reviewing the pics, I asked him for permission to publish them. Bruce was kind enough to contact Art, who in turn has been nice enough to let me share them with you. If you haven’t seen Art’s Jeep on the CJ-3B page or at one of the Willy’s reunions, then you are in for a treat.
One of the more interesting factoids I ran across while doing a search for Art’s Jeep on the internet was a discussion on the CJ-2A Page Forum regarding Bill’s effort to include Art’s Jeep in a Calendar of Fire Vehicles. It turns out that Daimler Chrysler wants a piece of any Calendar pie for showing a Jeep Grille (specifically, a $500 guarantee and 12% royalties).
So, that got me thinking. What about Jeeps on pay websites? Could Daimler, for example, begin asking for royalties from a site like the Jeep Forum, which has paying members, on which plenty of images of a Jeep Grille exist? At this point, my opinion is they can’t, because they haven’t enforced their rights (if they even have them) to do so. But, I’m gonna research this more.
Anyway, here’s some pics of Art’s Willys. Thanks for sharing Art 🙂
This looks sharp. It looks like the dashboard was smoothly modified.
“This is a COMPLETELY restored Willys Jeep from 1946, the first year of the CJ (Civilian Jeep). It has a clean Texas title and is registered as an antique auto. Every part of this jeep has been reconditioned, refurbished or replaced. The original flat-head 4 cylinder engine has been totally rebuilt with new pistons, rings, bearings and seals. The 3-speed transmission and transfer case have both been rebuilt including new bearings. The front and rear axles have been rebuilt with new seals, bearings and shims. The front and rear bumpers are custom built with hitch receivers. All the wiring is new, with six AutoMeter gauges in the dash. The electrical system has been converted to 12 volts. This Jeep comes with a new Bestop folding soft top. There are a few more improvements from stock, such as a 12 volt alternator in place of the original 6 volt generator, and new, more comfortable seats and seat belts. This Jeep also comes with a big stack of receipts and technical documentation including reproduction factory owner’s and service manuals. Call Grady at 214 681-9420”
This looks great! I’m assuming that it’s been 4,703 miles since the rebuild?
“For sale by owner – a 1946 Willy’s CJ-2A Jeep. Manufactured by Overland Motors back in 1946. This fully restored jeep is fully functional, starts immediately and runs very smoothly. Odometer reads 4,703 original miles. This would be a great find for a collector, or a very cool vehicle to tool around with at your vacation home up north. On my way to the Meridian, ID, Post Office, I came across this Truck for sale. I was in a hurry, so I only got a couple pics. It looks solid. There’s extremely minor rust on the edges of the back fenders. The interior looked fine. The price has already dropped once.
UPDATE: Now $1700
(12/17/09) This doesn’t look to bad.
“2WD Bought for a family project that unfortunetly has never gotten underway…. This is the real deal, ITS ALL THERE!!! Never been taken apart, never, “restored,” and in great shape. Its been warehoused for the last ten years, and has not been on the road since the 80’s. It’s straight but has rust, Black plates, clear title – non op, 100% unmolested – Dash is untouched, roof is solid. A great candidate for restoration. This is a PROJECT….. there is rust in the normal areas, but the exterior skin is in extremely straight condition. Available to show Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. 1700 obo”
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $23,000
Looks great.
“1942 WILLYS “Stat Grille” (¼ ton General Purpose Vehicle) JEEP.
This JEEP has been fully restored to the military exactness as it came off the line in Toledo, Ohio on March 5, 1942. Military Serial Number is 124833 and common features included no glove box, a round muffler, oil bath air cleaner/air filter, rubber hood bumpers, solid wheels, two hinges on the tool box lids, three bolt spare tire carrier, no blackout driving lamps, makers name on the rear panel, and a slat grill on the WILLYS.
This early Jeep comes complete with a mounted Garand carbine replica, strapped ax and shovel, and canvas top, and the frame plate for machine gun mount.
All numbers match manufacturer’s designation: model MB, serial number, 124833, build number 24832, and official government contract numbers; 303-ORD-2529 and army quartermaster corp. 398-QM-888 order forms, and hood number assigned 2042364. “W” was added at the base to distinguish Willys from Ford in later runs. Original “Go-Devil” engine.
Around 200 slat grills are estimated to have survived through 2006, according to ARMY MOTORS, the official magazine of the Military Vehicle Preservation Assoc.
From there it served in the United States Army and was eventually retired to Ft. Bliss, OK as a base transport vehicle and was sold at public auction in 1955 to become a farm vehicle. Eventually it retired from its years as an agri-jeep to a salvage yard in Enid, OK where another farmer purchased it 1992 for $1,000. The present owner purchased it at a farm auction in Tuttle, OK on March 13, 2002 for the same $1,000. Although the Jeep was originally delivered to the government for $399.68.”
UPDATE: Was $3900. **SOLD**
(01/19/10) For a non restored vehicle, this looks like it’s in good shape. Perfect for cruising the Santa Cruz Mountains after a winter rain and wind storm (think downed lines, mud slides, tree branches and more all over the roads ..)
“1960 Jeep Willys Pick-up. Dual Range 4X4. Super Hurricane 6-cyl. Original Ca. truck with blk. plates. New exhaust, Re-upholstered seat, Re-built electrical system, Runs and drives excellent!”
According to the seller, this is a perfect Valentine’s gift for someone. I can’t argue with that 🙂
“Up for sale is a 1946 Willys CJ2A in excellent running condition. Starts well, runs well, shifts well and brakes well. I’ve put tons of hard earned cash and precious time in getting the Willys into this condition. The body is in very good shape with the usual issues. Color is RED with a star. My wife told me to mention that it would make a wonderful Valentine’s gift for that perfect someone. This Willys is ready for the next step in the “restoration” process but not for me. I’ve spent way too much on
the project. The next owner will literally save a thousands (see the ad for all the work done)…. All this and more (I know that I missed something) This Willys can literally driven home. Call Dean at 248.762.3911 or Email me at Minnlowe@comcast.net. No warranty is offered or implied.”
I cannot remember seeing any pics with a gun mounted on a step. However, in the comment below, Lester has clarified for me that guns were mounted in that position. He notes that in “the Squadron/Signal book,WWII Jeep in Action by David Doyle, there is a picture on page 41 of a maintenance crew of the 1st Armored division installing just such a mount in the exact same location.” Thanks for the detective work!
“You will not find one this complete. This one is in great shape. It is very clean. It is not a total restoration, since I like military vehicle to look like the are battle worn, not new. It needs a new paint job, which I have the paint to do it, and it comes with the jeep. This jeep is in great working order. It is in restored condition. It is not a complete restoration. It runs and drives great. Does smoke a little. All parts are here. It is a 6-volt system. Been totally rewired. All lights work. Canvas top is new. It is garage kept. Brakes are all redone, new gas tank and lines. Has medical box. The motor sounds great. The leaks are in normal spots, If not started every day will need to be primed to start. Rebuilt transmission, clutch plate. Rebuilt transfer case. Put on a new fuel pump, new distributor, new coil, and new sensors. All gauges are in working order. The is a new speedometer, so I don’t know the original miles. Brakes are new and work great…..”
UPDATE: This is back on eBay. It was auctioned late last year.
This is a nice looking CJ-2A.
“1947 Willys Civilian CJ-2A. Please bid and have the money to complete this transaction. I bought the Willys just a few months ago to sit in the showroom. I have few other cars I have purchased that I need room in the showroom, so here is your chance! Frame off restoration a few years ago. Over $18,400 invested over the initial price of vehicle. This Jeep is about as nice as you will find, in, off, or on Ebay, or anyplace else. 274 miles since restored. No rust body, no filler, no bondo. Every known component rebuilt or refurbished. Starts immediately, idles well. Drives excellent. Correct Picket Gray paint, correct red wheels …”
I’m not sure if this has been available for sale previously or not.
“I am selling one of my projects. Very restorable WW2 jeep. The body is straight with the usual rust through in the hat channels and the fuel tank sump. The drive train is all original and complete. The frame is straight and solid, no rust throughs or breaks. The engine is a ’45 not sure if it’s the original. Email me for serial numbers. Now for the negatives. There is no title. I will provide a bill of sale. There are no seats. The one in the pictures goes to a GPW and is not included in the sale. Someone has cut the fire wall probably for a bigger engine. The jeep is not running but the engine does turn over. I can deliver to Phoenix at the Papago show on January 30th. Email me for more info and pictures. Asking $2500.”
UPDATE: **SOLD** A reader purchased this CJ-3B. It turns out it had a dual stick PTO in it. The new owner is very pleased 🙂

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $2500. It’s a great ad though.
Clarence needs a good home. I’m not sure if this ad is more art exhibit or more detailed explanation of the problems, but I really liked the pics; Enough to present them in full, though there are so many, I regulated most to the main page. Enjoy.
“NUTSHELL VERSION: 1954 Willys Overland “jeep” truck, 134ci 4 cylinder engine (original), 4×4, Borg-Warner T-90 transmission (3 speed), Spicer 18 transfer case (hi, lo, neutral), 15″ wheels, Original “jeep” hubs, Runs well, Drives well.”
======================
Clarence is a 1953 Willys Overland “Jeep” truck.
I purchased Clarence from an older gentleman in Caldwell Idaho, who bought him from his original owner. Clarence had not been driven for over 2 years when I had bought him. He ran just enough to get him onto the car hauling trailer.
Being that Clarence is 57 years old, he has some wrinkles and hic-ups I like to call “character”. Clarence and I went for a nice drive out in the country today to find a nice spot to take some pictures. I will try to express in pictures and writing all the “character” traits that Clarence has that makes him, I believe, so wonderful.
This one is on the drivers side fender. Fortunately it did not require any welding. Also note the “4 wheel drive” emblem is on this side.
Clarence is 4 wheel drive (4×4) with the original “jeep” hubs. I have used the 4 wheel drive in the snow and in the hills and it works great! He has the original 15″ wheels (3 black and 2 white). Which have radials on them that have over %50 life left. Although throwing some sealer in them or possibly some tubes wouldn’t be a bad idea. I currently stop by Les Schwab once a month to have them top them off with air
He also has the original Borg-Warner T-90 3-speed transmission. Which is still paired up with the original Spicer 18 transfer case
The inside is not to bad, although far from perfect. The bench seat has two storage spaces underneath. The seat appears to have been re-upholstered by a “non-professional”. It has some broken springs, but no tears. I did put in seat belts so that I could take my daughters around with me.
UPDATE: Was $2800 **SOLD**
(11/04/09) “42 GPW, Ford jeep- ex military, was going to be a future project, was purchased in Colorado from the owner who had obtained it from his uncle and was ulitized on both of their farms, I had the vehicle shipped to Illinois- has clean frame ( no road salt used in state) main reason I bought the vehicle. GPW runs but has untill recently has been in inside storage, and is parked outside and needs a little work. Unit is missing original gas tank and support strap but I will donate a cj2a fuel tank to get you going.”
UPDATE: Status Unknown. Was $2200
(12/22/09) This might make a good resto project.
“Looking for a good home!! Here is a great find that needs some restoration. Southern car/ runs fine/ needs brakes. Other than the rear bumper, the body appears to be original and in very good condition. Floor does need some work. Engine is a big Chevy straight 6 and runs strong. Transmission wheel drive shifts and works smoothly. All doors and windows are tight. Steering is also very tight and smooth. Newer shocks and tires. Four wheel drive. This is NOT a rust bucket – just an antique wagon looking to be beautiful again!!! $2,200 OBO. Also have several parts that could be included.”
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $3000.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $3900
(10/09/09) “Up for auction is this 1956 Willys CJ3B. This Jeep is in great shape with nearly no rust and mechanically sound. It does have its typically willys seal leaks, but very little. This Jeep was bought about a year ago and, have been working on it little by little to get it to where it is today. I run around town locally in it, take the kids around and use it as a great conversation piece at car shows. If I go to one next time it may win. I have gone as far as I want to go in the restore, it’s time for someone else look after this piece of American history. This Jeep has many new parts and all steering, brakes, transmission, 4X4 and engine work very, very well. This jeep will only run at about 45 miles an hour, but this little one will climb anything. I am selling this Jeep locally and have the right to stop the auction at anytime. I accept cash, PayPal or check, but I will have to go to a local bank with you to verify funds. This Jeep does not have a title as it is not required in Georgia for older vehicles.”
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1500.
It looks pretty stock and doesn’t look all the bad. I can’t tell if it runs or not.
“My dad has this cool Willy’s pickup. It is complete and an ideal restoration project.”
