Here’s a good price on a heater that Glenn spotted.
“Made by stewart warner, model 796 a1 gasoline, jeep, willys, mb no crank, fare to good shape, call 1 916 706 4862”
I spotted this ten page Stewart Warner 978 heater Instruction manual on eBay. Then I found what I believe is the actual heater itself. Seems like a neat combo.
Here’s the heater: It is a Southwind Stewart Warner 978 M heater. This looks to be for a 6V vehicle though.
UPDATE: Since this model was on ebay, I contacted the museum’s curator to see if the museum was interested. The curator let me know they already had an original (brand new) version of this heater along with the original box at the Ypsilanti Museum.
Josh spotted this ebay ad for an unusual hand crank heater. It is similar to the Stewart Warner Hand Crank Heater, but made by the Ypsilanti Machine and Tool Company. That is the same company that Preston Tucker owned.
“UP FOR AUCTION IS THIS HAND CRANK MILITARY HEATER.. I DONT KNOW FOR SURE BUT THIS MAY BE A STEWART AND WARNER HEATER.THIS MUST HAVE BEEN USED BY THE US AIR FORCE BECAUSE THE TAG ON IT SAYS PROPERTY OF U.S.A.F. I’AM NOT SURE WHAT THIS IS USED FOR..I’VE HEARD MANY DIFFERENT USES FOR IT I JUST CANT SAY FOR SURE WHAT IT WAS USED FOR. IT IS A HAND CRANK HEATER.. THE CRANK STILL CRANKS OVER AND THE GAS TANK HAS NO REAL RUST AND TANK LOOKS ALMOST NEW INSIDE.. I TRIED TO TAKE A PICTURE OF INSIDE OF THE TANK FOR YOU TO SEE. IT DOES BLOW AIR OUT WHEN YOU WIND THE HANDLE. I HAVENT EVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS.. I DON’T KNOW IF ITS WWI OR WWII OR LATER..IM SURE SOMEONE ON HERE WILL SEE AND KNOW WHAT IT WAS USED FOR.”
Email for price (nathalie.gannon@bell.net). You can learn more about these rare heaters here.
Larry had a Hand Crank Heater that he inherited from his father for sale. He wanted it to go to a good a Willys owner who will value it as much as his father did. I have no updates on this nor do I have any pics.
Larry writes, this is a “796-A hand crank heater, serial number 31.. weight 16 lbs,40,000btu at 120rpm,,manufactured by stewart warner, heater division, chicago ill. u.s.a. …… also stamped is i believe to be year of manufacture number… 472456-10-42.. it is in excellent condition with org paint and all parts org …. this heater unit has no rust or dust to it either, it was in a wooden box, along which looks like a ”service book” for a vehicle that data was keep on.”
UPDATE: Dennis has added a picture of the original Heater Hose
Dennis reports this is a picture of his “heater muffler flex hose (looks the same as in ad). The handle is from an old gas can and a tea kettle. The holders are from Satellite dishes from the dump (I also salvage the stainless steel nuts and bolts). ” Now, that’s some creativity!

ORIGINAL POST: I was at Josh’s when I spotted an odd device I didn’t recognize. When I asked what it was used for, he explained it and then offered to send images of similar heaters along with a couple brochure images. Cool stuff!
