More vintage articles in this final issue for 1955.

Here’s another of my favorite issues of Willys News, as it includes a photo of our good friend Hugo Vidal as he and his two traveling companions (only Charles and Hugo are shown in the pic waving good bye) were about to depart Philadelphia in their trusty CJ-3B for their drive to Alaska.

Also in this issue is an image showing some of the brochures available to dealers. There are two new brochures added since the January 1955 Willys News showed these brochures: 1) The Willys Utility Wagon Brochure and 2) the introductory 1956 DJ-3A Brochure (not available to dealers until 1956).

I thought I’d posted this issue already, but apparently I’d only posted portions. So, here’s the full issue.

This Willys News issue was memorable for me because when Hugo Vidal was visiting our home from Brazil in 2017, prior to the Alaska trip, I shared some of the Willys News issues with him. He thoroughly enjoyed looking through them because he recognized some of the sales people. When he saw Hickman Price’s photo on the front page, he said, “Oh him, I remember”. That is when I realized that the history I’d collected was a history he’d experienced!

This 1955 Willys News includes a center article on the use of Jeeps in case of atom bombs.

The cover of this Willys News highlights marketing’s strategy for attacking niches that could use four-wheel-drive vehicles.

This 1955 Willys Newspaper marked the transition away from Kaiser Willys news to just Willys News.

Here’s the complete newspaper for the December 1954 issue of the Kaiser Willys Booster News.

This Kaiser Jeep of Canada-sponsored magazine featured the Jeepster Commando, complete with a College Bowl winner of a Custom adorned Jeepster Commando. The issue also highlights the Repair Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, which dismantled jeeps quickly across Canada (200 appearances from Victoria BC to St. Johns). (Great find off of eBay!)

Willys-Overland began publishing the Salesbuilder magazines in July of 1948 with the announcement of the Jeepster. The Salesbuilder supplanted the W-O Sales News magazine. According to a small blurb on Google (I can’t read the whole reference), the Salesbuilder was part fo the effort to push the Jeepster.

I own a couple of Salesbuilder magazines, but those are the only ones I’ve seen. Below is a series of covers that I’ve been able to document so far. I’d like to find more.

As far as I know, Salesbuilder issues were published between July of 1948 and as late as August of 1951. By early 1954 (possibly January), Kaiser Willys had shuttered the magazine format for a newspaper format (see the March 1954, volume 1, issue 2 at the bottom of this post).
