Page 2 of this June 1957 issue notes that some vehicles experience a front end shimmy (I expect no one is surprised by this news). The article provides some thoughts on how to deal with that.

This four-page August 1956 issue includes a mention of the hydro-vac, noting that on vehicles with fresh-air vents that the unit should be mounted on the driver’s side fender.

July 1956 Willys Service and Parts News

This issue of the July 1956 four-page service and parts news introduces the Power-Lok differential upgrade, a dealer installation option. A news item on page three seems a little bit too enthusiastic about the clutch adjustments, as the article claims one in three adjustments leads to a clutch overhaul (and service profits).

This four page issue notes on page two that June 1956 was “Dent’s out of Fenders” month or, I did you not, “DOOF”!?! I don’t know what to do with that info.

Page three references what may be causing a few DJ-3A noises. One note refers to the “clutch driven disc hub”, which can cause a vibration issues between 33 and 45mph, but I’m not familiar with that part. There are a couple other solutions for particular noises listed.

May 1956 Willys Service and Parts News

After a few dud issues, this one has a few interesting items. Page two devotes almost half a page to Vacuum Power Brake Kits, like the kind that was installed on the DJ-3A when we bought it. This article shows that their installation was more common than I suspected.

On page four, there’s an article about the new “Fresh-Air” heater and cab ventilator and some of its advantages, along with a kit number. Also on page four, there’s an interesting article about the top bow rear brackets. First, their installation was cancelled in late 1955, but then Willys reversed that decision and added them again. So, there are some stock models made 1955 that didn’t have them.

February 1956 Willys Service and Parts News

This February 1956 issue shows repair part kits for wheel cylinders. Unless I am confused, certainly nothing extraordinary, it seems the newsletter is suggesting that CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-3B, CJ-5, CJ-6 and DJ-3A all used the same Wheel Cylinder kits, but actually the DJ-3A, unfortunately, is different from all those.

This November 1955 issue points out service bulletin 302 (have to look to see if I have that one), which introduces a new part to repair the column shift mechanism in wagons and sedan delivery vehicles.

Many thanks to Glenn Byron for sending me a box of documents to share with everyone. Some of the docs, like the one below, are copies made for Glenn by Dave Antram. So, thanks to Dave as well. This is Volume four, Issue number 1.

This four-page September 1965 Jeep Service and Parts News includes, on the last page, a list of all models and their Vehicle prefix, which is handy given the scarcity of records for this time period. There’s also a short blurb on page three about how the cross pieces under the hood of a Wagoneer could short out the alternator!

This issue is the last issue of Jeep and Service News, dated June-July 1966, that I bought in December. Most interesting to me were the modifications (not repairs) the USPS was requiring of the recently purchased FJ-6 and FJ-6As noted at the bottom of page four.

This four-page issue of the April 1964 Jeep Service and Parts News includes an exploded view of the T-89 side-shift transmission. It also appears to have a useful side image of how the J-series gas pedal operates, along with how to make adjustments (I’m not familiar with them).

December 1962 Jeep Service and Parts News

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This year ending December 1962 Jeep Service and Parts News includes an index page of 1962 topics. A short blurb on page two highlights the desire of some folks to switch their column shift DJ-3A to cane shift. The column shift as a novelty is neat, but it’s not something to be forced. It feels delicate (to me) when shifting. If I were driving the DJ on a regular basis, I would change it a cane shifter.

February 1962 Jeep Service and Parts News

The four-page February 1962 Jeep Service and Parts News wasn’t all that exciting, lol, but is timely considering it is now February 2024 (yes, 62 years have passed!). Page three mentions a couple service bulletins that can be found at the bottom of this post. Page four mentions the Pedal Slack Adjuster Kit, which is also discussed at the CJ-3B page: https://cj3a.info/tech/pedalslack.html

August 1961 Jeep Service And Parts News

This four-page August 1961 Jeep Service and Parts News issue begins, as usual, with discussions of $$$. Page two notes the important of the correct type and amounts of grease for the cam. Curiously, page two also requests dealer service departments review the 1000-mile inspection information for the FJ-3A Fleetvan, specifically Service Bulletin No. 539. I can’t remember another model mentioned so specifically; Unfortunately, I don’t have that bulletin.

Page four highlights some of the early products from Cutlas (Cutlas had just formed circa 1960, it’s president having previously left the same role at Free-Lock .. still don’t know the reasons for the change).

April 1961 Jeep Service and Parts News

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The four-page April 1961 issue of Jeep Service and Parts News begins with the usual “here’s how to make more money” story on the front page. Page two introduces a new Bendix radio for jeeps, refering to Parts and Accessories Bulletin No. D-57, while a story on page four under Money Maker shares the news about Willys Overland Air Springs, referencing Parts and Accessories Bulleting D-39. I am now wondering how I missed ever seeing references to “Parts & Accessories Bulletins”? I guess I wasn’t looking for them. I’ll look and see if I can locate some.

March 1961 Jeep Service and Parts News

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features, Service Bulletin • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This March 1961 issue of Jeep Service and Parts News is, once again, four pages. Page three contains a couple items I found interesting. In the not-all-fc170-hubs-are-the-same department, in 1961 Willys Motors introduced reinforced drums. I’m unclear on ‘how much more’ these are reinforced. Also on page three we can pinpoint the introduction of the trim tag to early 1961. The article also mentions more information was included on Service Bulletin 505, which I’ve included at the bottom.

Side note: I’ve collected a near-complete folder of Service Bulletins along with a folder of Fleet Service Bulletins, which are close, but not quite the same. They are sitting in a pile awaiting pics and commentary at some point.

1960 August/September Jeep Service and Parts News

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The four-page issue of the 1960 August/September Jeep Service and Parts News issue contains an ominous note at the bottom of the last page. The article noted that the military released some surplus M-38 fan blades, but warned that the fan blade should not be used with any other Jeep vehicle, as the results will be “unsatisfactory”. This got me wondering just how different these blades were? The fact that I have a remanufactured M-38 engine in my DJ-3A made me wonder if I also have an M-38 blade. Given my temp gauge doesn’t work all that well in the DJ, I doubt I will be any more unsatisfied with the temp than I already am!
