Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Originally published October 31, 2012: I stumbled across some Flickr Images of the Clark County, Nevada, Sheriff’s Office Jeep Posse. I searched for a website for the group, but could only find a Sheriff site.

In February, 1952, Popular Science published a short article about this Jeep Posse. Note the Slat Grille MB.
This October 1954 photo and caption from Kaiser Willys News highlights Chuck Yeager’s recent purchase of a Willys Wagon (or maybe he was given it).

Interesting photo. It appears this has a bed extender on it. I don’t think I’ve seen that on a fire jeep previously?
“1953 Press Photo McCloskey & Burke inspect donated jeep with fireman Pizzatola. This is an original press photo. This Jeep, equipped with two-way radio, was donated by the New Orleans Fire Department to the Fort Pike Volunteer Fire Department for communication between the two departments for fires along Cef Menteur. Highway Safety Commissioner McCloskey and Deputy Fire Chief Patrick Burke inspect the jeep. The fireman is Sam Pizzatola. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 09-22-1953.”
UPDATE: Barry noticed that this may very well be a photo with FDR in the passenger side of the jeep. 1) He spent extended periods of time in Georgia, 2) the side would have been cut to make it easier for him to get in the jeep, and 3) it looks quite a bit like FDR.
No date on the photo. The jeep to the left has had some modifications done to the entry area.

This may be a fairly early VEC. Had a column shift, has tool indents, and has the squares on the windshield.

“This Jeep is a great candidate for restoration. It has the original engine that starts and runs perfectly! The transmission and clutch also work as they should and I have driven it around the block. However, the brake lines are rusty so I have not attempted to get them bled. Right now the pedal goes to the floor.

I have a Jeep CJ-3a project for sale. It is a rolling frame and body. The body is in pretty good shape considering. I don’t see any major rust. I have a tailgate and I think I have the fenders & hood. This would be a cool rock crawler or mud truck project.”

The body is mostly rusted. The grill is solid. With the Jeep comes 2 spare axles, 1 front with manual locking hubs and 1 rear. Also I have another steering box and quite a bit of other small parts. It does not have as much rust and the floor has been patched by a previous owner.”

“This restoration is about 90% complete. The engine has been professionally rebuilt. It has new tub, complete new braking system. The frame has been sandblasted and painted. New radiator core, gas tank and gas lines, W.O. Carter carburetor, alternator, seat upholstery, windshield and glass, new wiring harness, gauges, clutch and pressure plate. The entire tub, grille, hood, fenders and tailgate are primed and ready for final paint. Engine is temporarily wired for demo running. Many other new parts included as well.”

(03/18/2017) “1954 Willys Jeep in all original condition except for the paint job, which is his favorite color. This is my grandpas Jeep and he has owned it for 30+ years. Used primarily for getting some popcorn from the popcorn stand on sundays and taking a drive through town at about 25 mph. Also used for a parade each year as well. He has the original jump seat for the back and the original complete top for it as well. I believe it is a soft top.
He told me it has 11,000 miles on it. I thought it was more like 16,000, but I could be wrong… So it’s either around 11,000, but no more 16,000… And again, all original. Has been well kept and well maintained over the years. However, I don’t think he’s driven it for a few years now due to it getting a little difficult to get in and out of, so it may need to be freshened up a little bit. Always use to start as soon and as quick as you could push the button and always purred like a kitten. Feel free to contact me with questions and or offers and I will pass them on to my grandpa and communicate back to you that way.”
