It need brakes and lines hooked up. I have a NEW complete set of brakes lines that will go with it and a NEW master cylinder. This jeep has a new gas tank and fuel line. I have not started the jeep in 2 months but the engine is in great shape and does not smoke or make noise or leak oil on my drive way. “Here is a Willys Jeepster I bought recently. Flat head 4 cyl, 3 speed with overdrive, 98K miles. I’m really more into early Ford Broncos, so I’ve decided to sell the Jeepster. This is the second one I’ve owned. She is a good driver. There is some rust in the floors and rockers, I have new in the box floor pans and rocker panels if you’re wanting to restore. Plus some other extra parts including an aluminum radiator. Personally, I would enjoy it the way it is. She also has 5 new tires.

I installed a new clutch last week and bought a new 6 volt battery. She runs, drives and stops as a ’49 Willys should. I have the front and rear side curtains. The top frame is complete and in good condition, but needs a new skin. This is the only Jeepster online below $10,000.00. If you come see it, you’ll buy it!! Tennessee title in my name.”

“1942 Ford GPW Jeep S/N 78559, Production date 11/13/42, Contract # 20159749, rebuilt by Moore Equipment Co., Modesto Division on June 1945 with the following recent work:

Period correct replacement engine, MB# 405201 (44 date) Casting # 4-25 638632 W3 AN1-C2 N- machined @0.20 oversize with all new internal components including hardened seats, valves, and a new Carter carburetor. Other new items include Weebee Webbing canvas top, NOS fuel sending unit, rear springs, and black out marker light..

Everything is in perfect working order. The total mileage is 1,914 since the complete rebuild 5 years ago. Most parts, including the rear floor pan were purchased from Peter Debella, Brent Mullins and John Fitzpatrick.. The engine has less than 500 miles since the teardown back in March of this year.. ”

Ted shared this eBay auction. It’s a beautiful jeep. It is missing the bow holders on the driver’s side and the spare tire mounted on the passenger side, but those are minor quibbles.

“This Willys is a Cj2a that has been completely restored from ground up.With the motor being all standard it has not been run much. I Ordered a new steel body mostly for the rust issues under the tool box and hat channel.By the time I replaced the channel and floor I was getting up in labor and cost.

I completely disassembled it and started with the frame and worked my way up. The list that follows of new parts installed to make it drive on the highway and be safe to operate. I upgraded the brakes, from 9″ to 11″” self adjusting; And new dual master cylinder. Converted it to a single wire Alternator to get the 12v needed for modern lights and all new cloth wiring.Rebuilt the steering box with new sector shaft, and the jeep does not wander going down the road. All steering is tight.I replaced most all the bolts.The list of parts is long and I did not cut corners on the restore.

I can appreciate that not everyone recognizes the elements that make up a stock jeep. And, I don’t mean to be harsh, but do want to be fair …. with that in mind, when a seller lists a jeep with the title “Museum Car: M38” (Not M-38A1), and then follows up in the ad’s text with “Everything original except the engine”, it begs closer inspection. In this case, just some of the non-original items include:
1) The bumper guard;
2) The turn signals
3) The front fender skirts
4) The paint color
5) The steering dampener
6) four of the five gauges
7) Speaker in dash
8) The radio in dash
9) Turn signal mechanism
10) The wiring running up the steering column
11) The passenger handle on the dash
12) The rims

“Everything is original except the engine which is a 80s Pontiac v6
Needs a rewire. Will need to be towed.
NO ODOMETER!”

1946 Wagon Trip Around Lake Superior

UPDATE II: An eWillys reader named Mike informed me that the state of Wisconsin bought some property from his family for wetlands. The wetlands is named the Gordon MacQuarrie Memorial WetLands, near Superior, Wisconsin. Small world!

Update: This is the first press photo I’ve run across related to the circumvention of Lake Superior in 1946.

“1946 Press Photo Jeep Traveling Near Western End of the Nipigon River in Canada. This is an original press photo. The “circumnavigation” of Lake Superior in a jeep station wagon was accomplished by those intrepid explorers of The Milwaukee Journal. Gordon MacQuarrie, outdoor editor, and James N. Meyer, a photographer. The 2,459-mile trip was made in a clockwise direction and took two weeks. They found this vast Canadian wilderness area easily accessible to Wisconsin sportsmen. Its edge can be reached in a day of hard driving, almost overnight by train and in a few hours by plane. Family tours are not recommended at this time, however, because accommodations on the far northern leg are few and far between. The picture above catches the spirit of the trip as the jeep heads east along the Nipigon River on the north shore. (near western end of branch of Nipigon River in Canada). (Canada – Series – 1946). Photo measures 8.5 x 10.25 inches. Photo is dated –1946.”

(04/26/2016) “1952 Willys Jeep/ M38A1 (former Military/early CJ) converted to Brush Fire pumper somewhere along the way. I don’t have much history on this vehicle. But, Drives great, pump disconnected for now, but does work. New Paint 2 years ago. (NOTE; PHOTOS SHOW FORMER UPPER HOSE TRAY, HOSE REEL AND TANK WHICH HAVE BEEN REMOVED AND SCRAPPED, REPLACED WITH SECOND SEAT IN REAR WITH MATCHING FRONT SEAT UPHOLSTERY) Now a GREAT truck for parades with the family or cruising the hills of California, or wherever. Fits in any garage!

Other details; Original 4 cyl Willys engine, transmission (3spd) high/ low range, 4 WD (though I’ve never locked front axles, all instruments work along with all electrical working.

History; I’m about the 3rd owner, purchased about 10 years ago from FF in CT. who purchased it from person in PA. As mentioned, definitely a former military M38A1 that was retrofitted as a fire pumper. Some base yellow paint on frame may point to it serving on air base or carrier? No other history known.”
