Blaine spotted this really neat model of a Jeep CJ-5 Camper setup. It’s pretty neat model and unique model that I believe is about 3″ long. It is shipped from Mannheim, Germany. In the post below this one, there’s some history about the camper inventor.

Chuck Prater’s Camper and Dump Bed Prototypes

• CATEGORIES: Camping, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Originally posted February 20, 2021:

Charles “Chuck” Prater’s (1928-1913) jeep camper has been discussed in the past, but pics of his prototypes are less well known. Chuck must have been a curious kind of guy, because when he was an employee at the circulation department of the Palm Beach Post in Florida he invented an automatic paper bagging machine.

How he got involved with jeeps isn’t well documented, but in the 1960s he developed a unique camper setup that allowed a camper to be ‘hitched’ to the back of a CJ-5. He showed off his prototype to the Palm Beach Post in July of 1968:

1968-07-31-plam-beach-post-charles-prater-jeep-camper-lores

July 07, 1968, Palm Beach Post, Palm Beach, Florida.

From the CJ5camper.com website we have this additional photo of the prototype, year unknown. You’ll note that the camper in the pic above seems to lack the blue color added to the pic below, so this may have been taken after the Palm Beach Post photo?:

year-chuck-prater-camper-test

The Palm Beach reported a few months later on September 25, 1968, that Kaiser-Jeep agreed to manufactured Chuck’s camper idea:

1968-09-25-west-palm-beach-post-jeep-camper-accepted

For reasons unknown at this point, Chuck waited almost two years later (August 24, 1970) to file his patent (approved August 15, 1972). The patent included several illustrations. Below is one of them.
1499078752660894799-03684048At some point after he filed his patent, Waldron Motors presented Chuck with camper #1. Curiously, the caption indicates he patented the idea, then sold it. However, the information above suggests he sold the idea, then patented it?:

first_commercially_producted_cj5_camper_artical_1

This newspaper clipping was posted to thegentlemanracer.com’s site.

Being the inventor he was, Chuck didn’t stop inventing after the development of the camper. He expanded on  his basic camper invention with a similar dump trailer idea. This article comes from the cj5camper.com site and is undated:

first_commercially_producted_cj5_camper_artical_2

I searched but could not find a patent or another other information about the dump trailer.

According to his brother-in-law Sam Williams (see his comment in this post), Chuck built another camper that fit the CJ-7, one which Sam owns.

“Do you want a Jeep? Do you want a backhoe? Do you want both? Do you dig car shows? Really Dig car shows?? Then you need this: A mid 60s Go For Digger factory backhoe built on a Jeep frame and body. The factory was in Toledo and continues today with a small self propelled backhoe made in West Virginia. These units were used by utility companies and municipalities and few survive today. The gentleman from whom I purchased used it for a water line business for 40 years until he retired in 2020.. The upshot is, this a fully functional, working machine, not barn find project. While it may not be pretty, you can get real work done with this. The original body rusted away and was replaced with the beauty you see here at some point long ago. F head motor. I did pull the head and had valves ground and new seals put in. This price Includes half a truck load of extra parts (most new) such as radiator, cylinders, valves, hoses, clutch, etc. Also includes a complete backhoe assembly which I found a year ago. Includes bill of sale. Cash. No trades. No Venmo. No Cash app. Thank you. Other stuff: Low geared rear end with top speed maybe 20 or so. I also have a handheld hydraulic breaker for this which I’ve never used.”

BestLok and EasyLok Hubs

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE II: This post was originally posted August 29, 2018:

Information about Husky and Dualmatic has been updated and more closely examined here.

Maury and I have been trying to determine how BestLok and EasyLok hubs are connected and how they are connected to Warn, Husky, and Dualmatic. The short answer is that we don’t quite know yet. But, below is what we do know. (Note, while Husky and Dualmatic are mentioned, it’s not a full history of either hub, histories I do need to address at some point).

In January of 1972, Richard Williams filed a patent, assigned to Warn-Belleview, for a new type of hub. Below is the image of that hub.

1972-patent-image-warn-belleview-patent-easylok

What’s curious is that there’s no documentation that Warn ever sold these hubs.

Even more curious, by July of 1972 this exact hub was produced and sold under the brand EasyLok, as advertised here, in the July issue of Four Wheeler Magazine:

1972-07-easylok-hub-fourwheeler-mag-ad-better

Why these hubs weren’t sold nor branded under any traditional seller of the time is a mystery to us.

Earlier this year, Maury spotted a set of hubs with the Warn patented design that were manufactured in 1982. Maury managed to get ahold of photos that show the hubs were manufactured and warranteed by BestopDualmatic (a joined company formed when Wynn industries combined the companies around 1974).

1962 CJ-5 Detroit Lakes, MN $11,900

• CATEGORIES: CJ5 This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Originally white, this CJ-5 looks solid.

“This is a very nice 1962 Willys CJ5.  Runs great, motor has been checked over and new rod and main bearings have been installed.

Steering box was rebuilt. Clutch is good, brakes are good. Body is in very good condition with just one small patch on the passenger side floor over a support channel (support channel has approx 3-4″ of rust). Interior of the tool box has some surface rust, no rust through. No frame issues.

Looks like original condition other than it was painted red over the original white, no modifications. Seats are in good condition, probably recovered in the past, no tears. New glove box insert. This would be an easy restoration or have fun with it as is.”

Koenig Half Top Herriman, UT **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Parts • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $500.

/Listed as a Meyers hardtop, this is actually a Koenig 555 Super Half Cab for the CJ-5.

“I got this Meyers half cab hard top for my ‘67 Jeep CJ5, but I am coming to the realization I will probably never get it cleaned up and on my Jeep. All glass is intact. Driver door is missing the hand crank. Would look great on a CJ6 as well. These are getting harder and harder to find for these old Jeeps. The last photo is what it would look like assembled. Located near the border of Riverton/Herriman, UT approx. 14000 South and 5200 West. Asking what I paid $500, but will consider offers.”

Lots of stock jeep here. This has a Koenig hardtop and a set of early Husky hubs.

“1961 CJ5 100% original CA barn find survivor. Aftermarket factory installed hard top has never been removed. All windows and glass good and functioning. Everything works. Owner told me the Jeep had a re-spray in the 70’s but you can’t tell because it’s faded and the patina. Paint will shine with a buff and wax but I don’t like my cars like that. Took this in on partial trade as part of my collection but do not need it. It came with a Jeepster and some other parts I needed. Unmolested and uncut. No modifications. Original factory installed side steps. Drive as is or lift it. Head turner everywhere I park it. Brand new industrial battery. Brand new tires. Dropping off Monday (7/10) at carburetor shop to rebuild it, so it runs perfect. It has a little dead spot that I don’t like. No leaks. Engine bay is perfect. Zero rust. Original rubber floor mat. Push button starter. 4WD, locking hubs and transfer case all working. 12 volt vintage glass dome light installed but nothing cut or drill”
