“Shipped in from California a few years ago…1942 Jeep has had modern upgrades and is for the individual looking to drive/use it, not for the purest. The frame has been channeled and reinforced, re-powered by a HIC equipped 12v Buick v6 coupled to a 4sp SM420 with warn overdrive.
Steering uses a modern box and linkage, shock towers moved higher and reinforced. Custom full cage, front and rear bumpers. The PRP bucket seats have been pushed back into the boxed a wheel wells for a more comfortable driving position. It sits on 33” swampers and true beadlocks. The upgrades done have been to improve on/off road safety and capability It’s a very light and easy Jeep to maintain/trailer, every time I have it at an event it’s the only one of its kind. Family wants to travel with me looking for a JK if you have a trade.”
Mike shared this pic he found on Facebook. It appears to be a lengthened and modified CJ-2A (based on the windshield). Anyone know what happened to this jeep?
This article tells the story about some POWs who were thrilled to see a jeep after years in captivity. It was published in the May 05, 1945, issue of The Wilmington Morning Star.
Make-shift water crossing. As Race pointed out, “Nectar” should be spelled Neckar River in the text.

“48 Willys Jeepster not running needs all mechanical, body is in nice shape. I was going to get it running, but has been parked in my shop in Vancouver for several years. The motor is seized, and I took the head off to see the pistons were rusted. I was going to pull the pistons and rering it plus a valve job, but now I need the shop. The interior is in great shape and top also is in great shape with all the windows. This will be a great driver after the mechanical is done, with a nice body.”
Seller’s phone number is included in the ad. Body has some rust.

“Rare/ Hard to find
Genuine Willys Overland Jeep CJ2A issue 1948
This Willys CJ2A has a vintage army camo paint job. Jeep still has its original seats, wheels, windshield glass, engine, drivetrain, etc. Brakes are not working. It had a make-shift gas tank that was located in the rear of the jeep. It has been removed and will include an original fully functioning gas tank. This jeep includes a working Willys L134 flat-head 4 cylinder engine. Engine ran great last year — I have since removed the gas tank and parked it. Mileage is 72,589.
Imperfections include rust, dents, dings as pictured.
Comes complete with rare original title from 1948 which shows purchase date of 09/28/48!”
Interesting that the CJ-2A windshield has been cut down form the bottom. I don’t think I’ve seen that done.

UPDATE: Peter notes that the trip was cancelled to Covid. He hopes to try again in 2025.
Peter Heyniger is organizing a cross-the-US vintage 4×4 tour along the Trans American Trail for the summer of 2020. He’s looking for participants, sponsors, and helpful folks along the route. The tour welcomes vintage jeeps, landcruisers, broncos, and other older 4x4s. He expects that to complete all 5200 miles will take seven to eight weeks; folks have the option of doing all or part of the route.

UPDATE: Thanks to Tremaine for supplying better pics of the CJ-2 grille guards seen in a couple of these photos.
Original Post March 4, 2019: These photos were published in the July 22, 1945, issue of the Sunday Star Gravure Section of the newspaper. I don’t think I’ve seen a photo of the jeep pulling the trailer from the driver’s side.
It feels dramatic.
