“I bought someone else’s stalled work in progress several years ago as a 2nd undertaking for me and my son. My boy’s attending college now, so our second Jeep isn’t going to happen. The guy who had the ’42 before us did quite a bit of work on the rolling chassis and tub, but otherwise just bought and stockpiled new parts.

THE BAD — Easier to list what’s not in the “basket” than what is:
• Doesn’t have center data plate or frame tag
• No inner windshield frame
• No instruments other than a fuel gauge
• No radiator, top bows, or distributor..

Runs and drives.

“Restoration project. This is a truck you can drive while restoring. It has a very strong flat head 6cyl motor that runs great, does not burn or leak oil. No smoke on startup. Strong 3spd on the floor. Working 4wd. Frame is excellent with no rust. New master cylinder and breaks all around, less then 5 miles on them. Cab has a good outside with some rust in normal places. Inside the cab needs some metal work but is restorable with home welder.  This jeep has not been on the road as a daily driver for a while so needs to be gone through. I have driven it and it tracks very nice for a 50 year old truck. It is being sold “as is” so please feel free to ask any questions you may have.  I can email you more pictures if needed”

For those not familiar with a CJ-6, this is basically a ’62 CJ-5 that has been stretched 20″ between the door and the rear wheel arch at the factory. This longer wheel base makes the 6 more stable, and have a larger interior capacity than the 5. I am 6’3” and have no problem with legroom in this JEEP.

(07/09/2014) It’s a project.

1953-cj3b-dunn-nc1 1953-cj3b-dunn-nc2

1953 Willys CJ3B for sale. It is a project very near completion. I was going to build this into a crawler and beach vehicle.

The Good-
The body and frame have some surface rust but are solid. The F134 4 cylinder engine is original and has 130K miles on it. It ran 2 weeks ago when I finished wiring the ignition. The Carter carburetor was rebuilt a few months ago. The 12V alternator is brand new. The transmission is a NP435 6.68:1 first gear from Novak Adapters(http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np435.htm) this with the adapters was around $2500 the transmission is rebuilt but if you looked at it its brand new. Novak did a leak down test before shipping. The transfer case is a Dana 18 2.46:1 low range. It was rebuilt before bolting it up to the transmission. The axles are Dana 25 and Dana 44 the gearing is 5.38. The final drive in low range in this is 88.4:1 plenty to crawl. The wiring harness is about 2 weeks old also.

Biscuit Progress – Bump and Steer

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-david-jeep1For the last few days I’ve been in Seattle taking advantage of the nice weather to get some work done on Biscuit. Fortunately there weren’t too many ‘sonny-do’ projects, so I had a chance to get right to work.

First, I tackled the custom bracket I made for the transfer case. You might remember that I installed Dana 18 gears into a Dana 20 (a good way to improve the gearing) and turned the single Dana shifter into a dual shifter. When I built the bracket, I designed it to fit alongside the TH 350. I didn’t know it wouldn’t fit right against a T-18.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-transfercase1

As you can see, the side of the shifter bracket tong sits against the transmission. There was no room to attach a bolt on the backside of the tong.

Since the shifter bracket is more functional then beautiful, I reused most of the parts. I simply cut off the old tongs, welded them onto a plate, and welded the plate back onto the bracket.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-transfercase2

Not pretty, but works.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-transfercase3

The ‘finished’ bracket with some primer on it. You can just see the bolt that I welded to the back side to make it simpler to bolt the shift levers into place.

Next, since the transfer case sits slightly lower than it did before, I created a new side bracket. I made a template out of aluminum. To build the bracket I took a piece of an angle I had around the garage, cut it, and bent it into the shape of the template. Again, it’s nothing pretty, but gets the job done.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-transfercase4

Transfercase side support with primer on it (so it would photograph better).

As I explained in a post a couple weeks ago, while I was puling apart my jeep I discovered that the powersteering was rotating slightly as I spun the steering wheel. That’s a problem! So, I dedicated the last few days to fixing that problem and changing the way the front bumper connects.

The basic problem was that the stock power steering mount unit only used three of the four holes to attach the steering unit. Therefore, I planned to add a cross piece to provide a place for a fourth bolt to attach. However, that meant I had to cut the plate on top so the bolt could be attached and removed. And, since I was doing that, I figured I would change the way the bumper attached.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-powersteering1

The white arrow shows how the unit was rotating to the driver’s side.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-powersteering2

This arrow demonstrates where the power steering needed to attach.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-powersteering3

Here I’ve removed the bracket from the frame to provide a better look at it. This is the stock bracket from a 1973 CJ-5.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-powersteering4

This shows the cross brace I made from 1/2″ steel.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-powersteering5

Next up was the alternation of this top piece. You can see the outlines I’ve scratched into the plate.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-powersteering6

Using a cutting blade and a saws-it-all I removed chunks of the plate.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-powersteering7

Now it’s looking a little better.

Next off came the bumper:

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-bumper1

The length of the bumper in from of the jeep annoyed me a little. So, I wanted to remove a couple inches.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-bumper10

The frame rail on the left has been cut back so the plate can fit snuggly over the custom front shackle. The far right frame rail has not been cut back yet.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-bumper2

In order to bolt the bumper on to the front of the jeep, I created a set of flat plates and drilled some initial holes into them. The plates are tall so that I can weld a cross piece on to them. The cross piece will allow me to properly position the holes in the bumper with the holes in the plates.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-bumper3

I clamped the new plates with the cross bracket onto the bumper so I could drill the holes. (for the pics I removed the clamps.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-bumper4

With the bumper holes drilled, I can how set threads into the brackets.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-bumper5

This is another view that shows the brackets, the cross piece and the tap at the far end.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-bumper6

These are the brackets cut down and tapped. I had a little problem threading the hole on the lower right, which is why it doesn’t look quite right. It works fine though. I have also ground down the sides to make it easier to weld and fill the plates to the end of the frame.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-bumper7

This show the plates welded and cleaned up on the end of the frame.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-bumper8

This is a top view.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-bumper9

This shows the bumper attached, everything painted, and the power steering affixed to the new and improved bracket.

With those projects out of the way I turned my attention to the engine I bought from Daryl last summer. I discovered the motor has stock bores. The pistons appeared cleaned, but never run. The engine looks like it was rebuilt, but never run. The spark plug ends are clean and shiny.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-david2

Me checking out the motor. It came without an intake manifold.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-engine1

With the head pulled I was relieved to see clean cylinders. Then I noticed there was no build up at all on the gaskets.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-engine2

The tops of the pistons showed they weren’t new, but they appeared to have been scrubbed cleaned.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-engine3

The underside of the heads show no carbon and the plugs look unused.

Given the engine looks unused, I’m not going to attempt to rebuild it. Instead, I’m going to run it as it is and focus resources on properly rebuilding my other motor (with its new heads and updated cam) later this year. In the meantime, I can run with this motor and focus on getting the other parts I need to get Biscuit running. Since they are both Buick V6s switching out motors at some future date won’t take very long.

Lastly, I thought you might enjoy seeing the welder I’ve been using. Dad tells me he got this Montgomery Ward classic as a hand-me-down from a local jeep builder (Al Carrol) in the late 1960s. It’s still works real well.

2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-welder1 2014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-welder22014-jeep-rebuild-may-june-welder3I hope to return later this month to complete some more work. I will be updating the front brakes to discs. Thanks to R&P for the brake kit! I’m also hoping to have all the parts to install the drive train. Here are a few more parts I’ll be adding to the mix:

  1. Holley 390 carb (i have a kenne belle intake)
  2. Clutch kit & pilot bushing
  3. Brake Calipers for the new disc brakes
  4. Brake power CJ-7 unit with proportioner
  5. Bushings for my new rear emu springs (thanks to Mitch at ARB for helping out with those)
  6. Possibly a different set of headers (am waiting to see what I can find online)

So, stay tuned!

1951 M-38 Birmingham, AL $7000

• CATEGORIES: M-38 • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: The price has dropped to $5000 and the jeeps’ been cleaned up since it was last listed.

(07/31/2012) “Asking $5000 OBO. I’ll entertain trade offers on anything of equal value. Needing a 60 gal air compressor and media blast and welding equipment (no arc stick welders).

I have a 1951 Willys M38 that is 90% road ready.
The Willys needs an oil line to the oil filter bath unit replaced (I’m planning on replacing it next weekend) and a battery to run – that’s it.
The front passenger side tire has a slow leak – I haven’t bothered to find the source yet as I’m working on it in my garage and hasn’t bothered me.
There is some painted-over rust / rot in the passenger side floorboard and the tool storage box under the passenger side seat.
The windshield is cracked but you can get a new one for less than $150.

The trailer is road ready and the tires are in great shape. I just pulled it 30+ miles with a Nissan Pathfinder and it pulled perfectly.
Some of the wood rail sections could be replaced but they are solid. I don’t have the canvas.
There is some rust but most is just scale. There are a few rust / rot spots that could use repair but nothing major and you can easily use it as it sits.
The lights look to be aftermarket replacements. They don’t work but I think it’s just the ground wire. I’ll look into it this weekend too.
This was designed for a deuce and a half truck but if you flip the pintle on the trailer you can lower the tongue height by as much as twelve inches and pull it all day with the M38.”

UPDATE: Ted sent me more pics

Ted sent me a picture of his friend Jim’s jeeps. If anyone knows of a Mahl front loader, Jim would like to buy one.

Here’s the short list on all its options:
Koenig twin stick PTO
Ramsey front winch
K+K side mount sicle bar
Three point hitch with Newgen Buzz Saw
extremely rare Canfield fold out wrecker assembly
Westinghouse PT1 compressor under the hood
Dual wheel adapters front and rear
Ge welder which came from a parts jeep that had paperwork showing the factory option welder cost more than the actual cost of jeep itself back in 1946.

Every thing works as it should with the exception of the welder ,which actually has been tested out and works great but is not hooked up because with all the work done to this jeep in the restoration Jim could not bring himself to cut out the tool box section to install welder.

Canfield wrecker has been converted to armstrong type ,to make room on mid PTO pulley for KandK bar.

About all we figure the Willys needs now to complete the swiss army effect is a Mahl front end loader if anyone has one for sale.

(12/23/2012) It’s a pretty pricey project.  The paperwork is missing, too.

“This is a 1949 Willy’s Jeep CJ2A. 4 Cylinder Flat, Engine was rebuild in 2002 (never driven since). The jeep is a nearly completed project with many original parts.
The following work has been done and up-front, I am a certified welder, metal fabrication journeyman / Blacksmith from Germany.
– Rebuild floor with proper tube- frame
– Rebuild bed with proper tube- frame
– Rebuild foldable Windshield, new glass and seals
– Built a 20 gal gas tank that goes across the entire jeep with barriers inside to avoid slushing. (toolbox from passenger seat was beyond repairs)
– Built Seat-mounts and purchased new Seats
– Custom Heavy Duty Bumpers
– Re-arched all four Leaf-springs
– Replaced all four shocks
– Lots of body work

New seats with heavy duty mounts. Custom bumpers front and back. Rebuild steering gear box. (still a huge play) Reinforcement and accentuation with diamond plate.
Repaired and reinforced frame where needed. Rebuild all four leaf springs to proper hight and arch. 4 new shocks, new wiper and rear lights. I have 4 fairly new rims that would replace the ones currently on the Jeep.
The Engine would start fine if a mechanic would spend an hour with it, since I have never touched it in 8 years. I also do not have paperwork for the Jeep anymore. I would be more than happy to pay the DMV fee for re-registration once the Jeep is sold.
I am selling this nice project Jeep, simply because I bought that prior to having Children and a House. I simply do not want to spend the time on something I would rarely use.”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

This is a nice looking jeep.

“This jeep has always started. it is in great shape for its age. always kept indoors. It has a top, heater, wench, hubs, AIR lockers, airtank, reciever hitch, welder, two fuel tanks, duel exhust, great tires, rear seat, roll bar, camping rack. new extra best top. Has just about everything to rebuild the engine (new in the boxes) I was going to rebuild it 20 years ago but the jeep still purrs. I have had the jeep for 40 plus years! There is a small dent in the back where a trailer tounge hit the back. I drive it only a couple times a year. I noticed some oil leaking out of the hubs. There is a tear in the passenger seat. Been sitting too long. Everything works. I can get off a four wheel drive road, get on the freeway, use overdrive and cruise at 65 mph. Been a great jeep. Miles may not be accurate. I would like to be payed within 7 days after auction. I think it best to contact me and we can make arrangements for payment and delivery. We can possible deliver the jeep for a fee.”
