Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. There’s a tag suggesting this was a reconditioned jeep at some point. It’s likely a mix of GPW and MB parts, along with some civilian/other parts (such as the rims, seats, bumper).

“1946 Willys CJ2a that is not all original. I do not have a top or doors. 350 small block Chevy with 2 barrel Rochester carbureator, Spicer 18 transfer case, T90 3 speed manual transmission, Dana 25 front axle, Dana 41 rear axle, and both axles are open with 5.38 gear ration. Brakes were upgraded some time in the past to the 68 Wagoneer drum system. New fuel tank and sending unit under the driver’s seat.

These two ads were published in the same newspaper a year apart. The 1947 ad highlights the versatility of the farm vehicle and, as an added bonus, its versatility cuts costs. The 1948 ad emphasizes the cost savings, because the jeep is versatile. It’s basically the same message, but with different emphases.
This April 4, 1947, ad from A.B. Clothier & Son in the Oxford Leader highlighted the farm versatility of the Universal Jeep.
This ad appeared in the January 1956 issue of Practical Builder, page 282. It’s a pretty niche specific ad.

“Been garage kept since 1984 but was still started periodically everything runs rebuilt engine by my gpa n uncle years ago rebuilt transfer case it got 3 gears i beilive than like 3 different 4 ×4 4high 4low than extra 4low front n back pozzy track all original parts has the hubs with the two levers that pull out and spin to lock and unlock your hubs i know its at least considered to be in #4fair condition or #3 wich is little better than fair i got an updated clean title and everything serious inquires only pm me mainly need the cash but might barter for trades n cash the more i start putting into it the more its going to be worth i wish i could keep it but i am in a bind financially”

(11/26/2019) It runs, but still needs some work.
“I got this classic old flat-fender Jeep 16 months ago as a non-running project.
I’ve done a ton of work to it and now it runs.
It is still a project, but for someone else to finish.
The bottom line is I have a clear title and it runs down the road pretty good.
The stock 3 speed tranny shifts fine and the transfer case works good 2wd, 4wd hi, and 4wd lo.
The stock 4 cyl engine has 110-125 psi compression on all cylinders and runs great.
The tub has its fair share of rust holes.
The fenders, hood, and tailgate are in pretty good shape.
Runs? May have a Beck hardtop.

It is in running condition except it needs a little work. “PRICE REDUCTION!!!! I’m still selling my two Gpws 1942&1943. Again It comes with two bodies, two motors (one decked and bored) an engine rebuild kit. New front seats new gas tank. An extra frame that’s been sandblasted already, three hoods ones been and blasted. One Jeep has already been taken apart. One transmission. Axles. And 5 brand new tires. I have lost interest in the project, and I need money for school. I’m just trying to get back what I have into it. $5000 obo for everything. I might be willing to trade. I also have some small accessories like a water bucket. I also have the capability to transport it to anywhere in the South west part of the US. In and Surrounding Colorado. For an extra cost depending where. I’m not really not wanting to part it out and want it all gone at one time.”

Bill Reiss shared these photos he took of a modified CJ-3B used by the Automobile Club of Southern California. It was a feature of the Los Angeles Auto Show earlier this week. (See an example of the club’s 2A set up from 1949 here).
