• CATEGORIES: CJ-3B • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This runs and drives, but needs some restoration.  This may make a good project.

“Offering for sale my 1956 Willys CJ3B Jeep. I have too many projects and this one need a new home. It is a candidate for restoration as it has not been customized and has all factory parts. 6.50 X 16 inch mud grips in good shape. Jeep starts and runs fine. Four cylinder F head -134 engine is strong – NO SMOKE, NO LEAKS. 5:38 ratio axles so this is not a freeway jeep. New fuel tank, clutch, starter and flywheel ring gear. The transmission has been rebuilt and has about 20 miles on it. The seats are original and in good shape due to the metal cab. Cab has excellent glass, door glasses roll up/down. Cab was built by Koenig Iron Works (Houston, TX). and is solid. Jeep has surface rust and some rust in traditional places. Steering is good with minimal play. Heater, headlights and gauges all work. Converted to 12V with one wire Delco alternator. Brakes will need some work to make it safe to drive. This would make a great hunting (keep you and your equipment dry) or a great ranch jeep. I will give you a BILL OF SALE and am asking $2500 CASH to make this deal.

Hungarian Jeep Site with many Pics

• CATEGORIES: Website This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Earlier in this decade, I drove through part of Hungary.  I dropped in from Slovakia, stayed in Budapest and then drove north into Austria.  Some people call Paris the city of love, but I’m pretty sure that title belongs to the city of Budapest — there was lots of kissing and hugging all over.  And I enjoyed my fair share of it too there …. I also went to my first true European ‘bath’ while I was there; the description that comes to mind was crowded and disorienting.  There was no kissing and hugging in there and, frankly, I was happy about that.

My understanding of Hungarian isn’t very good; the number of consonants to vowels made any attempts to pronounce town names and words an act of folly.  However, despite that,  I still found this Hungarian jeep site enjoyable: http://ww2jeep.gportal.hu .  I’ve seen many of the pics on this website elsewhere and some nowhere.

Started in 1941, Jeep was the last successful car company launched

• CATEGORIES: News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: (01/29/09) I wanted to thank Gary Wolf, the writer of the article, for responding to my email to him.  He told me he has forwarded the correction to the editors of Wired.

Yes, I read the same thing and about choked on my dinner. That statement was published in Wired Magazine’s most recent issue, February of 2010 page 29. (and yes, the writer of the story got a note from me)

In his effort to defend his theory that the internet was pretty dead in terms of launching new, wildly successful companies, Peter Thiel, co-founder of Pay-pal and the first investor in Face Book (yes, he’s done well financially, which in Silicon Valley turns you into a soothsayer — yes, I used to work there …  ) used the history of the automobile as an example of how all booming industries support fewer and fewer wildly successful startups over time.

Now, I’m not quibbling with his general argument, but he seriously undermines his credibility with one of the biggest inaccuracies regarding the Jeep that I think I’ve seen published.  To quote him accurately, he states “But the last successful car company started in the US was Jeep in 1941.” …. yeah … right.

I mean, it’s not like he’s off by a year or something; instead he’s wildly off the mark in multiple directions.  For starters, American Austin (called Bantam later) was launched in 1929, Willys Overland was originally called Overland and launched in 1903, and Ford was launched in 1903.  Secondly, no one company build the early jeeps.  In addition, no company was called Jeep until 1962 when Kaiser became Kaiser-Jeep.  We could even get picky, such as Bantam built the first jeep in 1940 rather than 1941.  And, I’m sure we could go on, but I think the point is made.

Some Registered Trademarks of Daimler Chrysler

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I was doing some research on which Registered Trademarks relating to Willys or Jeep were related to Daimler, Chrysler (D/C) or their subsidiaries (and I was surprised at how many of these are owned by different subsidiaries within the D/C organizations).

A short primer on Trademarks.  Registered Trademarks are applied for with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. If the Office thinks you have a good case, they’ll grant you a trademark.  Sometimes you apply for a trademark with just words OR sometimes you apply with the words in a particular design.

When you apply for a Trademark, you apply for 1 or more different classes, with each class costing currently between $275 – $325.  As you see below, over the years, D/C has applied for additional Trademarks over additional types of goods and services (and in fact has applied for and then abandon some other categories also which I don’t list).

So, if you aren’t bored yet, keep on reading.  Below, I’ve listed all the valid Willys, Jeep and some other interesting Trademarks.  First, you’ll see the Trademarked Name, followed by the Registration number of the Trademark, and finally, notes about the particular Class for which the Trademark was granted.  In most cases, you’ll also see the year when it was first used in commerce, which is important for protecting your rights of ownership.

1) I was surprised to see that D/C only has registered trademarks for WILLYS in two classes, which is good for me because it leaves a large number of Willys names open should I want to Trademark some additional names.

A) Willys 2722568 IC 028 TOYS, NAMELY, MODEL REPLICAS OF LAND VEHICLES.

B) Willys 3387789 IC 012 G & S: Automobiles.
