The other day someone asked me about headlight bezels (or if you prefer, headlight ‘heads’) and how they changed through the years. I did not have a good answer to that reader’s question, so this working thread about bezels is the result. Along the way, I learned that some folks call these parts “heads”, but perhaps that is more military related?
1. 1945-1946 Early Painted Bezels on CJ-2As
Early CJ-2A bezels were painted, not chromed, until approximately #38687, according to the CJ-2A page. As far as my research indicates, only Walcks carries new, unpainted bezels. This is the flatter style of bezel without the tab.
2. 1946-1953 Later CJ-2As, CJ-3As and 1956-1959 DJ-3As
After roughly CJ-2A #38687 the bezels were chromed, but their shape was the same. They lasted through the end of the CJ-3A production run and into the early DJ-3A production run (1956-1959). These example images are from Kaiser Willys.
3. 1950-1952 M-38s, 1953-1971 M-38A1s, and M-170s:
I didn’t realize that M-38 and M-38A1 bezels were the same. It’s on the M-38a1 site that I encountered the alternative term “head” for the bezel. Peter Debella has NOS rings.
4. 1950 USMC CJ-V35 Blackout Lights ‘bezels’
Thanks to Mike Wixom for helping me out with these rare blackout lights.
This type of headlight bezel, or more correctly blackout ring (although not that effective), was used only on Marine Corps Radio Jeeps as far as I know. Specifically on the CJV35/U and possibly on the MZ-2 and MZ-3 Radio Jeeps from Late WW2. They were installed at the factory on all 1000 CJV35/U Jeeps built in May of 1950. These were eventually replaced by the actual blackout lights found on the M-38.
Because these aren’t readily available, someone posted this writeup on how to inexpensively recreate them:
Here is a different, larger version of a CJ-V35 bezel. Mike believes the ones shown below may have been fabricated and not original, but perhaps the owner can offer input on this.
This CJ-5 Tuxedo Park brochure sold on eBay recently. It’s dated January of 1964.
I’m sure someone with a Kelly CJ-5 Hardtop could use these doors.

“I have a complete Fisher Speedcast plow setup off of a 1969 CJ5 Jeep with a V6. It is a 4-way plow not just up and down. It should fit most CJ5s 1955-1970 and probably later ones as well with small modifications. It is complete with everything including pump, hoses, cable controls, plow frame/lift, and a 6’6” four way blade. The blade is in very good shape. It might need a couple new hoses but everything else is all there and ready to go. Asking $450 for everything. Call or text if interested. If the ad is still up it is still available.”

“1957 Jeep Willys CJ5. Runs great!! Just got it NYS inspected. Hardly any rust on it. All original, not restored. This was a mint barn find from original owner. Only 33,000 miles on it. In great condition for an original 57 Jeep. Only reason I’m selling it is because it’s in such great condition I’m afraid of using it to go off road. I don’t want to damage it, I’d rather sell this to someone who can appreciate the historical value. Like I said, runs great I’ve been driving it around for a couple months now. I just put new brake lines, hose, pads, wheel cylinders and master brake cylinders on it. Along with a new carb.”

“It has to go! She is getting upset! Price drop…First one to show with $3750 cash takes it home. 1957 Jeep Willys CJ5. 3speed with overdrive. New brake master cylinder. Tilt wheel. Very good body. Runs great. I believe it is the Chevy 4cyl 153 cu in. Not sure on the mileage. Unfortunately I can only tell you what I was told when I bought this on September 4th, 2019. I can give you the number of the person who sold it to me. Was told that it was part of a divorce settlement and that it sat in storage for the last 15 years. The reason I am selling this Jeep is that I was supposed to be looking at a boat the day I bought the Jeep. She said I don’t need another vehicle. 1) This August 11, 1964, photo shows Frank Millard’s 4 Wheel Drive Center in Encino. There’s a pretty wide diversity of jeeps, including CJ-3BS, CJ-5s, A DJ-3A, Gladiators, and Wagoneers.

3) A rare photo of the Antelope Valley Sheriff’s Posse jeep.

“Selling my 1943 Willys MB. The windshield is from a CJ3A. The hood is off a M38. The rest of the body is the MB. It’s sitting on 36×12.5×15 tires. I put in the TPI 350 from an ’89 Iroc, mated that to a TH350 which has the adapter to the Dana 18. I just rebuild (3 weeks ago) the Dana 18 with all new gears and bearings. I believe the axles are from a CJ5. The rear axle has a Powr-lok in it and I welded the front axle. I believe the gears are 3.73 (haven’t actually checked) because it hits highway speed pretty easy. It has the disc brake conversion in the front and 11′ Drums in the rear. I put in Dual manual Wilwood High volume master cylinders for the brakes with their brake pedal.

The CJ-5 is $1600, but I don’t see a price for the CJ-2A. Seller also has a CJ-3B body and a rough CJ-5 (brown). Seller would prefer to sell altogether.

“I have a 1946 Chassis and body that is a good start to complete a CJ2A. Motor turns over but I have never tried starting it. The body is original steel and was stored in a garage for 40 plus years. Color is a greenish yellow. It has a few panels which I would replace but is in very good condition, does NOT look like Swiss cheese. Chassis has complete drive train including axles, transmission, brakes and wheels. Tires are No Good. It was stored in Syracuse area for a number of years. It has a few gussets to front frame horns and rear V brace needs replacing. I looked for over 2 years to find these items and are the best I could find. Only reason I am selling is I have temporary storage but can’t keep there long term. I have an early flat fender parts vehicle that can be part of the deal.
I also have quite a few parts for various years and am willing to sell them as one lot. Don’t ask to buy individual parts etc. I have an offer to buy everything if I don’t sell as semi complete units.
I have a 1979 CJ5 also that needs extensive body work but frame and drive train are excellent. The 79 has NY title and it runs and drives with a temporary gas tank. I did not register it. The 79 has the 4.2 six cylinder motor. 1979 has good General AT2’s all around. 1979 is $1600 or best offer. I have a number of panels from Classic Industries for the 1979 that will go with it.
I prefer text messages and I don’t answer my phone till after 6:30 PM Mondays, Tues. and Wed. but I will look at your texts.”

This CJ-5 has the early 0-10 King Seeley speedometer. I think this has a great, vintage feel to it.

Specs:
• Body, title, VIN, VIN plate, and original black California plates are from a 1960 Willys CJ3B. Clear title and current registration, both in my name. Tub is stretched behind the door openings; seats 4 adults. It sits on an early CJ6 frame. The wheel base is about 104″. Plenty of leg room & head room all around.
• Engine: Buick V6 225 odd-fire, about 8,000 miles on it since rebuild by previous owner; new battery, aluminum 2 core radiator, electric fan, heavy flywheel, known for allowing low rpms and good crawling,
The license plate suggests this was a California jeep, so the rust very well could be minimal.
