• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on oBay.

I could use one of those snowplows this year!

“This is an original vintage press photo. Thirteen new jeeps with snowplows attached have arrived for delivery to the Milwaukee’s Department of Public Works. They will be used in winter for fulfilling city contracts for sidewalk plowing. They can also be used with lawn mower attachments. The fleet will be added to similar equipment already on hand. Future purchase of more is under consideration. George Renno, 1350 South 98th Street, town of Wauwatosa, a passer-by, looked over the vehicles at Greenfield Motor Sales, 9800 West Greenfield Avenue, town of Wauwatosa. The jeeps cost $2,087 each. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 04-02-1952.”

CJ-3B Drag Racer and Plow Jeep

• CATEGORIES: Features, Magazine, Old Images Jeeping This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The September 1961 issue of Hot Rod Magazine included this reader-submitted photo. The owner explained that the jeep did well as a drag racer (in the stock 4cyl class I’m sure) when they weren’t using it as a plow jeep.

Meyer Plowing Video

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features, videos This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

In a seasonally perfect topic, Tim forwarded this link that included a video that has some vintage video of jeeps moving snow with Meyer plows. The video notes that Meyer has been selling plows since World War II. I happened upon a second Meyer video on youtube, featuring 1960s innovations.  Finally, below the videos are four pages from a 1947 special equipment book showing early Meyer ads.

American Bantam Plow

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old News Articles This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Ted Jordan forwarded me the following photos of a rare American Bantam plow with serial plate he just acquired.  He also forwarded several emails about the plow and Barry Thomas’ efforts to learn more about it. I’m sure Barry will continue to dig into this issue. You can follow his efforts at http://farmjeep.com & his farm jeep blog.

That got me doing my own research. There’s an interesting interrelationship between the Monroe Auto, Newgren and American Bantam companies. I’m sure some of you have information you can add to this, but for now the history below is what I managed to cobble together.

american-bantam-plow23 american-bantam-plow22 american-bantam-plow21

Monroe Auto Parts senior project engineer Ivan N. Schatzka helped the company develop a hydraulic lift in 1946. In the same year the Newgren Company became the distributor of the Love hydraulic lift, developed by J. B. Love. At some point Monroe Auto acquired the Newgren company (and discontinued the Love Hydraulic lift in favor of the Monroe lift?). By 1948 Newgren was advertising that its implements were operated in conjunction with the Monroe lift.

Meanwhile, American Bantam was struggling. During WWII American Bantam had annual sales around $25 million. In 1945 that amount dropped to $19 million. In a failed attempt to shift course and sell post-war civilian trailers, American Bantam sales plunged to  $3.8 million in 1946 and further to $3.7 million in 1947. Unable to meet dividends, American Bantam struggled, and may have been close to shutting its doors.

For reasons that aren’t quite clear to me, on July 5, 1948, Monroe Auto Parts offered American Bantam directors a proposal. Monroe wanted to sell the Newgren Company to American Bantam. In exchange, the MacIntyre brothers, who led the Monroe Company, would take over American Bantam. Thus, Monroe was divesting itself of the Newgren company, but maintaining control of Newgren by gaining control of its new parent company, American Bantam. All of the common stock in American Bantam would become non-voting preferred stock. In exchange for the Newgren Company, American Bantam would pay the Monroe Company $600,000 in a new class of stock.

My theory is that Monroe’s management was not optimistic about the future of jeep implements, but were bullish on the auto part industry in general. Fearing Newgren could become a drag, due to its focus on jeep parts, they moved it to American Bantam. This put the Monroe company on a path to focus on the auto parts industry, yet allowed them to maintain control of Newgren by selling it to American Bantam.

Scheneker Snowplow Bristol, RI **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Parts This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $275.

Here’s a vintage Scheneker Snowplow at a good price.

“Complete 7′ snow plow off Willys CJ-2A Jeep. Includes the complete blade with skids, upper frame, lower frame, pump, hose, and pump mounting bracket. Works good. It is a nice design that includes braces for the Jeep frame and an easily removable lower frame to improve ground clearance. A small piece of the cutting edge is broken off on one side. The blade was a 6′ and was widened to 7′ many years ago. It could be easily cut back to 6′, but my Jeep pushes it fine. The pump originally mounted on top of the generator on the motor, but I made 2 brackets to attach to the original flathead motor or a Jeep Dauntless V-6. One of these with it if you need it. The unit was made by Scheneker Iron Works.”

Ted’s Plow Jeeps and some PTO stuff for sale

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Ted wanted to share a picture of his plow jeeps. Having back up plow jeeps is a necessity if you get a lot of snow.

He writes, “Anyone who has ever plowed over two and three feet of snow up and down a long dirt driveway with a flat fender can surely appreciate the beauty of 5:38 gears, military weed and ice chains all around and a ton of weight in back of the jeep. They all break every now and again; that’s why I have back ups, but when there going good they are unstoppable!!! The green 2a has made a lot of big dollar rigs look silly (some of the time). Its short list is original 60 horse flatty w/ supersonic head ,T98 four speed ,overdrive w/adapter and rear PTO wrecker option winch, front warn, rear 44 flanged, power steering, bigger brakes, full cage and so on.The overall crawl ratio is 95 to 1 with the 5:38’s and 1st gear in t98.”

Sandy Nearly Crunches Ted’s Plow Jeep

• CATEGORIES: Features, Reader Stories This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Ted’s CJ-5 was narrowly spared by Hurricane Sandy. Great pics!

Ted writes, “Hey Dave, here’s a few shots of a huge tree that came down during Sandy and almost got my new plow truck. I almost moved the CJ and my dump truck in back round before storm but never got to it. I got real lucky, the little CJ pushed her way through three and two feet deep snow storms later in the year!!!”
