Harry’s selling this wagon with the barn doors. I looked up the serial number printed on the government plate, because I thought this might be Parkway conversion, but, according to the serial number, this is a 4×4 station wagon and not a sedan delivery. You can contact Harry via his phone 805 284 5640 or via email airhairy @ gmail.com (remove spaces from around the @).

1946 Fortune Article on Willys-Overland

• CATEGORIES: Features, Magazine This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: This post was published on eWillys November 15, 2014. I don’t normally post whole articles, but there is a great deal of interesting information within it. I’m reposting this today because there is some additional information about Mr. Clement Miniger and his Auto-Lite company leading a syndicate to buyout John North Willys’ stock in 1929 (Learn more about Miniger And Willys Light here).

1946-08-fortune-mag-pg81-closeup-jeeps

A variety of pre August 1946 CJ-2As in different colors waiting to be shipped from Willys-Overland’s Toledo plant.

This fascinating article was published in the August 1946 issue of Fortune magazine. It’s a LONG article that covers the history of Willys Overland Corporation from it’s bankruptcy in the early 1930s to it’s post-war market positioning. There is not much information specifically about jeeps, nor many jeeps photos. But, if you want to understand how the corporate structure evolved, it’s a good article.

One particular chart published in the article was Willys’ research on paved roads. The company felt that jeeps would be very popular in outer countries, due both to the brand and the lack of paved roads. To meet that demand, Willys planned to export 25% of all jeeps.

WILLYS-OVERLAND

THIS JEEP-RIDING AUTO INDEPENDENT IS TAKING NEW LEASES ON LIFE AND ITS OWN REAL ESTATE • THE BOYS IN THE BACK ROOM ARE DOING FINE

ln the years between the depression and the second world war, the once great Willys-Overland Co. clung by its nails to a niche in the U.S. automobile market. Gamely, it tried to sell the public a mousy little car, with a tough, four-cylinder engine, which was the cheapest thing on the road to run. Itself battered into receivership and reorganization by the depression, Willys had the patently sensible idea that such a car, guaranteed to get people from here to there at a minimum expenditure for fuel and upkeep, would be a blessing to a hard-pressed public that had not been similarly served since the demise of the models T and A Ford. But the public was proud, if poor, and more conscious of the millinery than the engineering of a car. When it had to buy cheaply it found the used-car market much more tempting. During most of those years Willys’ production ranged below the break-even point. bln 1940, a mere 27,000 cars were built. Now Willys-Uverland is coming up for the postwar round with a product line still topped by a light passenger car-with a four or a six-cylinder engine, buyer’s choice. It will probably be as cheap to buy, give or take a few dollars, as any 1947 car on the market, and possibly less expensive to operate and support than any of its competitors. And though it will be considerably more stylish, inside and out, than the prewar Willys, it will have, at most, simple good looks rather than breath-taking beauty. If that were the whole story, one might wonder why some people think Willys-Overland is an exciting proposition among the auto independents today, and why some mighty big boys in the automobile industry appear to be sparring for position in the peculiar, complicated Willys-Overland hierarchy.

Unquestionably Willys has fresh charms. To name four:
1) The tough, four-cylinder motor that was the bread-and-butter item in the prewar Willys is the same motor that powered the Army Jeep, which became an international byword during the war. As the largest producer, by far, of the Jeep, Willys-Overland became the beneficiary of this enormous, war-born prestige (and also added a tidy sum to its treasury). Ten days after V-J day, Willys was in production on its civilian or Universal Jeep, of which it had sold around 28,000 by June 1, despite plant shutdowns totaling eighty-three days owing to strikes in suppliers’ plants.

2) Under way at its giant Toledo plant is a Jeep-inspired line of Willys utility vehicles including (a) an all-steel, all-purpose station wagon, (b) a sedan delivery truck, and (c) a low-weight, medium-duty truck with a combination four and two-wheel drive. All are powered by an improved four-cylinder Jeep engine and feature the Jeep snub nose and square fenders. All will be produced in 1946, and can be run through the same assembly line if necessary.

3) Because the rugged, lightweight vehicles in the Willys line are peculiarly suited to the exigencies of foreign motoring, in which the paucity of paved roads and the steep price of gasoline are forbidding factors, the company has decided to throw 25 per cent of its production into export. The development of a foreign market of such proportions is steadying to the seasonal economy of an automobile company. And Willys’ new top management is richly experienced in the export field.

4) Finally, many an economist, foreseeing an era of inflation, high taxes, and high gasoline costs, will agree that the hour in the oiiing is ripe for an automobile that places operating economy above fashion appeal. Willys is confident that its traditional economy car is, at last, accurately attuned to the times, and that its 1947 passenger model can bite into a solid and sustained market, both here and abroad.

1962? Mobile Motion Picture Unit Instruction Book

• CATEGORIES: Documents, Features, Willys Wagons This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

1962-just-wagon-mobile-motion-picture-unit

This booklet started out last year on ebay with a price of $279. A lack of interest caused the price to plummet until it fell into my hands. This rare mobile motion picture unit sports a Tornado engine, which places the copyright date of the instruction booklet at 1962 or 1963.

Unfortunately, attempts to research this unit further using Google result in a bunch of results related to the “First Motion Picture Unit” during World War II or the associated government archives, which while interesting, isn’t helpful to our present query.

The booklet runs about 25 pages and is mostly focused on the operation of the generator. There aren’t enough photos for me to determine whether this is a modified 4WD sedan delivery wagon or a Traveller. Most of the pics have number references; the numbers are referenced to specific parts in the back of the book.

1954? Siebert Willys Ambulance Utility Cars Brochure

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features, Industrial-Welder-Generator, Willys Wagons • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This undated Siebert Willys Ambulance brochure was probably produced in 1954-or 1955, based on the grille design on page 4. There is no form number on it. Within the brochure the company describes three different ambulance options.

  1. One was called an Ambulance Utility Wagon and is featured on the backpage. It appears to be a basic sedan delivery with added first-aid/ambulance equipment.
  2. The company also produced a Willys Custom Ambulance, which included side windows and a “deluxe interior”.
  3. The third was called the Willys Ambulance Bus (originally called the Willys Ambulance in a 1951 brochure). It was a lengthened 4-door (with the rear doors set up as suicide doors), along with other mods.

Comparison of Five Wagon/Truck Brochures

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Here’s an updated version of the post that separates the 1950-1952 oversize truck brochure from the sedan delivery wagon brochures with similar designs.

Originally Published Feb 26, 2021: I was inspired to purchase and learn more about the brochures below after realizing that a poster I saw during a visit at Dave Antram’s place in 2013. Here’s a photo of it:

2013-06-willys-jeep-poster

While I originally thought these brochures were all printed in early 1950, I’m now less certain, as Colin pointed out that #1 (4WD Willys Truck) mentions “Key Starting”, which appeared in 1952. In addition, one of the truck brochures has “1951” printed on the subheading. I suspect we’ll never get firm evidence on the publish dates of these:

You can view the original scans using the following links:

  1. The upper right New Willys Sedan Delivery with — Hurricane 4 Cylinder Engine (Copper?)
  2. The upper left New Willys Sedan Delivery with — Hurricane 4 Cylinder Engine (blue)
  3. The lower left Sedan Delivery Export brochure with the “New” Hurricane (red)
  4. The lower right Sedan Delivery with “Famous” Hurricane is here (blue):

4-1950-brochures-wagon-brochures-interior

And now the trucks from the same period. I don’ have full scans of the bottom two trucks:

  1. The upper left NEW 4WD WILLYS Truck brochure
  2. The upper right NEW 1/2 Ton WILLYS Truck brochure
  3. The lower left is of a French 4WD Willys Truck brochure:
  4. The lower right brochure is a 1951 Willys 4WD Truck Brochure

4-1950-brochures-truck-brochures-interior

Then there is this oddball Willys Delivery Sedan brochure that has the same front as the brochure above, but unfolds differently, is black and white, and has content arranged differently on the interior pages:

1951 Brochure: Power! … Where It Counts!

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This 1950 or 1951 brochure focuses on the main 4WD vehicles offered by Willys-Overland, including the 4WD Sedan Delivery, he 4WD Truck, the 4WD Station Wagon, and the CJ-3A Universal Jeep. There is no form number on it. I’m dating this as 1951 because 1) it doesn’t mention the f-head being ‘new’ and 2) the 1950 truck and wagon brochures are more colorful and larger, whereas the 1951 brochures feel a little more subdued in their use of color.

“‘Red Hills Rods & Classics’ is very proud to offer you this ultra-rare, rotisserie restored 1955 Willys Kaiser 2-Door Sedan Delivery Wagon 4×4! The recipient of a 3-year no-expense spared, nut & bolt rotisserie restoration of the highest level, I feel safe to say it is most likely the finest example of its kind in the country! Finished in its factory correct President Red / Palm Beach Ivory, I think it’s also safe to say that it features the best-looking color combination available in 1955.

The wagon was in excellent original condition before the rotisserie restoration and was basically all there in its original form w/ absolutely no rust & no body damage whatsoever. Every single component inside & out was disassembled by hand and the body was placed on a rotisserie. The body panels are laser straight all of the way around, and the President Red / Palm Beach Ivory paint was polished to show-quality condition w/ a brilliant shine throughout. The bumpers & small pieces of brightwork were re-chromed are look ‘as new’. Every single component on the truck was completely restored or replaced w/ factory NOS parts. She sits on the original painted 15” Willys America 5-lug steel wheels, wrapped w/ Denman 7.5 x 15 tires. You can walk around this wagon a hundred times and not find a bad angle or a single distraction. It is as close to ‘flawless’ as you can get, period. The undercarriage is as nice as it is on top w/ every single component completely restored or replaced w/ factory NOS parts (see undercarriage photos).

Open the driver’s door and you will find a beautiful tan interior restored to ‘factory new’ condition throughout. All of the chrome trim pieces on the dash have been completely restored and all of the lights, blinkers and factory original gauges are in perfect working condition. The original steering wheel, factory original seats, headliner, painted dash, door panels, door handles & cranks, shifters, Hurst hardware, etc. are all in 100% ‘as new’ condition. No corners were cut and no stone was left unturned making sure that everything looked ‘factory fresh’ from front to back. Open the rear doors and you will only find more of the same, including glossy red paint throughout w/ beautiful oak cargo bed strips & matching spare wheel & tire. Even the screws & washers on the oak cargo bed strips are absolutely ‘flawless’. Please look closely at the photos and I think that you will agree that this is the finest ’55 Willys 4×4 Wagon that you have ever seen in your life!

Pop open the hood and inside the beautifully detailed engine bay you will find the fully-rebuilt #’s matching Continental ‘Super Hurricane’ 226ci 6-cylinder motor dressed in its factory correct colors, w/ all of its factory original components, including the oil-bath air filter, Carter 2V downdraft carburetor, mechanical fuel pump, 6-volt electrical system, 6-volt generator, Autolite tar-top battery, Fram external oil filter, etc. The motor is linked to the original Borg-Warner T-90 3-speed manual transmission w/ original Dana 18 transfer case, which feeds power to the original Dana 44 rear axle (4.88 gears), and the original Dana 25 front axle. The Warn locking hubs up front were added during the restoration. This amazing 1955 Willys Delivery Wagon 4×4 runs & drives beautifully, but it is truly the kind of vehicle that should be placed into a museum or high-end show truck collection.”
