Kelly Manufacturing Self Locking Hubs

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  This post has been updated with more pics. Also, there is currently a Kelly Hub brochure on eBay.

In May of 1957, DA Ruben L. Beck filed a patent for a new hub design. Beck was a dreamer and like many dreamers, some saw him a genius while others thought him just plain crazy. Beck’s goal was to create a simple, but effective, four-wheel-drive hub.

kelly-hubs-da-ruben-beck-patent2 kelly-hubs-da-ruben-beck-patent1

Beck had already made an early impact in the jeep world, when he founded D.L. Beck Manfucaturing in Middleport, Ohio, a company that made hardtops (see Beck hardtop history here).

1954-beck-all-steel-cab-brochure1Beck sold his hardtop company to Hubert A. Kelly, in the 1950s but Beck and Kelly remained in contact. The date of the sale, thought once to be 1951, is less clear after this document hit eBay in 2014. It indicates Beck was still selling hardtops in 1954.

1954-beck-all-steel-cab-brochure3

No matter when the sale occurred, Hubert took control. It wasn’t long after the patent filing that Mike Kelly, Hubert Kelly’s descendent, remembered seeing the hubs for the first time. He thought that was about 1958. I asked that he review the patent and Mike sent me the following notes:

“The Kelly Self Locking Hub I knew a was little different than the one pictured in the patent drawing. The housing was larger in diameter and had reliefs milled along the outside to allow clearance for the mounting bolts. The internal parts looked very similar to what I remember. I’m pretty sure the final Kelly product was a Beck design. I don’t recall anyone else working on it.

The hubs were manufactured in Charleston West Virginia. We already had an large machine shop there on Broad St. So moving production from Ohio to West Virgina was only logical. I know the assembling the hubs could be “interesting” if you weren’t watching what you were doing. Putting the internal workings together with the ball bearings being under spring pressure woke up more than one man who wasn’t paying attention.”

1950 CJ-3A Chassis/Parts Winchester, TX $900

No pics provided.

https://austin.craigslist.org/snw/d/west-point-jeep-parts/7091091266.html

“1950 CJ3A Rolling Chassis with Jeep F161 6 cylinder engine. Good grill. usable fenders and hood, body junk! No title. Comes with an extra L134 engine, two good L134 heads, 2 repairable CJ5 fenders, two military Jerry can holders, one bell housing, one red Jerry can, one heavy duty brush guard, one extra Jeep wheel, one radiator with a good copper core (fits pickup or wagon)and boxes of gears, shafts, speedometer heads, one T84 shift plate, one mirror assembly, and several buckets of bolts, nuts, and small parts.

This Jeep was to be my next rebuild, but at 79 years old, I decided to clean house and give it up. Most of the parts are an accumulation of parts from Jeeps that I restored over the last 50 years. Two of my Nephews have Jeeps that I passed along to them. One is a 67 CJ5 with a V6 engine and is for sale for $4500.00 and the other is a 1942 GPW that is 85% original and is for sale for $9,000. Both run very well. Both Jeeps are in Winchester

I will consider any reasonable offer on the CJ3A and parts. The price on the GPW is firm but the 67 price is negotiable. The CJ3A and part’s price is also negotiable and will consider any reasonable offer for all of it as one package. The two flat heads sell at Kaiser Willys for $300.00 ((new) and the L134 engine block (new) is $2000.00.”

The jeep drives, shifts, and brakes normal. The overdrive unit, when engaged, reduces engine RPM and allows for a more road friendly vehicle. Look up Warn overdrive to get an idea of its value. (have video of driving through gears)

Different Versions of the Koenig-Manufactured Hardtop

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Adding to this post, there are a few examples of DJ-3As with wide windowed hardtops. It’s possible they were just using the CJ-5 hardtops. http://www.ewillys.com/2021/02/10/photos-of-a-1956-rhd-dj3a/

=================

Original post from March 17, 2020:

1956-dj3a-brochure-2

The small rear window can be seen on the back of the top at the left top of this 1956 DJ-3A brochure.

Mike raised a question the other day, which resulted in us learning something new. He was viewing the launch-brochure for the DJ-3A when he noticed that the Koenig-manufactured hardtop was illustrated with a small rear window. Up to that point, Mike and I and several other folks were under the impression that all these tops had the same size rear window, but in fact that was false.

Instead, it appears that in 1955, through 1946(?) and possibly into 1957, Jeep used a small window in the back of the top, before moving to a larger one. Especially with the DJ-3As, with their lack of side windows, that small window would have made backing up difficult, as it would have been hard to see anything behind the driver.

Here are the four types of hardtops of this style identified so far.

  1. This top was available as early as 1955. This photo is a 1955 press photo showing a CJ-5 with the small window in the back. The CJ-5 version of the top also came with side windows. The image below is also available on eBay.
    cj5-koenig-hardtop-small-rear-window
  2. It’s not clear when the transition occurred, but in late 1956 or in 1957 the top began arriving with a much larger window as seen in this photo.
    1962-cj5-suffern-ny4
  3. Though an early photo of the DJ-3A with this style of top showed it with windows, the production version was manufactured without side windows.
1956-dj3a-buffalo-ny8This photo shows the same jeep from the side. You can see the lack of side windows.
    1956-dj3a-buffalo-ny7
  4. This image shows a 1964 hardtop on a DJ-3A with the larger window.

“2 Willys Jeeps. One 1966 (Estimate no title) and One 1963 with Title. The red one is in poor condition but runs and drives. No brakes but parking brake does work. Plow does work but it’s manual angle. The front leaf springs are both broken. The white Jeep has an engine but is locked up. It has oil in the engine and I did put ATF in the cylinders but that’s as far as I got. It is also missing the radiator and heater core along with the starter and generator. I guess someone stole them for scrap before I bought it. I bought this one from an auction. I found the last PA registration in the glove box. Body is in great shape compared to the red one. I was going to build one good Jeep from the 2. Will not sell Jeeps separate. The title to the red one has to be changed before it leaves the property. $2500.00
I have had a lot of emails about selling the Jeep separate or selling Parts off of the Jeeps. The Jeeps will not be sold separately. There will be no parts sold off of either Jeep. They either go together or they will stay here and hang out.”

“I have a set of 4 Renegade rims. 5×5.5” bolt pattern. I’m not sure, but I believe these are original to the 72-75 renegades, but will fit any CJ.

They are all stamped “FORGED” on the back side. Also a number is found stamped on each rim. 3 have the number 3153655, and 1 has the number 3153542. These numbers don’t mean much to me, but they may to someone.

These are in really nice shape with no damage and should look like new with a good polishing. $400 for the set. Would consider shipping at your expense, but pickup in Newtown CT preferred.”

Jeep-shaped Lighters

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Mario shared his newest flea market find. It’s a Ford GPA Seep shaped lighter that holds a lighter similar to the small flat fender jeep lighter shown below.

ford-gpa-lighter-seep-mario31 ford-gpa-lighter-seep-mario32 ford-gpa-lighter-seep-mario3

While searching for another example of the above SEEP lighter, I discovered someone made a SEEP ashtray. It may have been a one-off build, but it’s neat none-the-less:

ford-gpa-seep-ashtray1 ford-gpa-seep-ashtray2 ford-gpa-seep-ashtray3 ford-gpa-seep-ashtray4

From the Collectors Weekly website: “This is another more unusual piece of trench art. This model is 6″ long and stands about 1 3/4” tall. The body is of shell brass and the wheels are “42” and “43” dated .50 cal rounds. The headlights are smaller rifle brass cartridges, dated “43”. The center portion lifts out for cleaning.”

======================

Original Post (Feb 2020): I just returned from a quick trip to Seattle, so limited updates today.

While there, I picked up three different sizes of Jeep lighters (thanks to Dan)! I plan to keep one of each and will sell some of the others. I tried to price these on eBay, but none of these are currently on eBay.

The largest one is particularly cool (far right). To ignite it, you collapse the steering wheel; the fire shoots out the hood. I’ll get a video of it tomorrow. The smaller ones are surprisingly heavy.
