“Rare VTG Vintage 1950/60’s Gold Willys Jeep Desktop Pen Holder Wood Base in Very Good Used Condition. Base Only – No Pen Included. Base measures approximately 3-3/4″ x 4-3/4″. Cork pads on bottom. Needs a detail job. Minor scuffs and scratches associated with age and use. Please review the attached photos to determine your opinion of the cosmetic condition of this item. “Just seeing what’s out there for trade. Cars trucks 4×4 Or not. Somthing cool idk. This thing is sweet. 1500 LBS fiberglass tub. 36 inch tires and a 302 ford engine. Has 3 sticks. One tranny and two Tcase. All lights work. Runs and drives. I don’t know a ton of knowledge on it but know it’s old and it’s cool and it’s super light with a v8. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser, fuel pump… fixing it up more and more ebery day.

Anyway not looking for cash. Mainly looking to trade for another cool rig. Project or not. But don’t hit me with garbage. This Jeep is bad ass and probably worth some coin. I got it from my boss who collects high end cars.”

1972 Pikes Peak Winner a CJ-3A Race Jeep?

A reader heard a rumor that the winner of the 1972 Pike’s Peak “in the unlimited class was a cj3a”. I found a video of the 1972 race, but no jeep was mentioned:

I also learned that the overall winner on one day of the 1971 Pikes Peak Hill Climb trials was Bob Sievert (his obit) in a jeep, but Bob failed to win that year. His rear end broke during his race up the hill, forcing him to rely on his front wheel drive. Still, he finished 5th in the four-wheel-drive class. Here are the results of that 1971 race, though no pics are provided that show why type of jeeps were raced:

In 1973, Bob did win the Non-Production Truck division of the Pikes Peak race. There’s supposed to be a mention about him and his jeep in the July 1973 issue of Hot Rod Magazine. Eventually, I was able to find a photo of Bob from 1973, but it appears he raced using a modified Jeepster Commando:

There was another jeep entry in 1973, this CJ-5 operated by Ken Anderson, but no mention of how well he did:

So, I’ve been unable to confirm that a CJ-3A was used or modified for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, but I’m sure CJ-3As, as well as WWII jeeps and CJ-2As and other vintage jeeps were raced given there was a 4WD class. Anyone else have more info or photos?

This late ’50s CJ-5 looks like a great candidate to run as is. It’s got early Free-Lock hubs, an Warn Overdrive, and a  PTO Winch. The body appears solid as well.  The trailer has potential as well (if the bottom is good).

“This is the nicest and most original 1960 Willy X Jeep you will find under $25,000. 6592 original miles. In 2012 @ 2346 miles a complete rebuild was performed on the entire vehicle, costing $11,000. ALL receipts for the rebuild on hand as well as original jeep documents. Everything on the Jeep works as it should. One light switch knob handle is broken. Little to NO rust, tires are in great condition, 4WD works as it should. It is a one of a kind Jeep. You would have to pay $25,000 to come anywhere close to the quality and collector value of this jeep. This is not a Jeep to slap big wheels on and go mudding.
