“I have a 57′ titled as a 58 Forward Control 4×4 Willy’s is decent shape, not perfect by any means but reliable with a good tune up… ‘WLDWLLY’ (plate) has been sitting in my barn since 2001 when I went to seminary in Oklahoma. Just before graduation I had a massive stroke and severely paralyzed my left side. I was hoping that my arm and leg would get better and I’d be able to do something with the Jeep in the future but so far this hasn’t panned out….”
1946 CJ-2A (mb?) Avenal, Ca $3000
UPDATE: Price dropped to $3000
With the driver side indents and the lack of tailgate, this certainly looks like an MB/GPW to me. Note the phone number is missing a digit.
“nice jeep …runs ok…have done some basic work on it…used it for deer season last year and now we are moving….got to much stuff has original straight 4 cylinder ….has 4 new bi-directional military tires, new battery, new plugs, cap, rotor and points new coil and 12 volt head lights….12 volt conversion with altenator… call 559-816-960.”
1953 CJ-3B Gloucester, Va eBay
This is a great looking, early CJ-3B.
“One sweet little JEEP for a true JEEP lover. This Willys is all original – nothing added and nothing missing. I’ve owned it since 2002 when I spotted her frolicking on the beach at Hatteras Island, NC. It was love at first sight. I’ve had 7 fun years with it and I feel its time to move on and let someone else have some fun. I have had the brakes redone along with new stock shocks. Tires are in good shape but could use a new spare. The top is in fair shape and should give good service for a while. This Jeep has the original upolstry and rear bench seat. All body parts are original and show no signs of rust…. ”
1942 MB/GPW La Center, Wa $1800
UPDATE: The price has dropped to $1800. This appears to be a very good price on an MB.
“Willys Jeep needs a new home. Has a brand new battery. Please call 360 263-3259 or 360 951-3409 after 5 PM..”
1947 CJ-2A Racine, Wi $6500
This CJ-2A has a fiberglass body. The roll bar is attached to the back wheel wells. I’m pretty sure that’s not a good idea.
“1947 Willys CJ2A Jeep, clear Illinois title. Runs great 4WD works, restored about 10 years ago, fiberglass body, x-tra parts that go with it. ALWAYS stored indoors!! Ready to go for spring, get’s lots of looks!! Price is negotiable, would consider trade for Grand Marquis, or Crown Victoria or ??. Let me know what you got? 1951 M-38 Owasso, OK **SOLD**
“1951 WILLYS JEEP M38 – $8,000.00 OBO. 26k miles. Third owner (first owner was the US Army), kept in the barn, runs and drives great, 7.50×16 tires. Everything is ORIGINAL to the jeep (OD green paint still underneath) except the carburetor/air cleaner, top, seats. Have the backseat also. Spicer & Dana: Where did the Spicer 18 come from?
I spent some time earlier to day trying to track down what came before the Spicer 18 transfer case. Unfortunately, I can’t find anything such as a Spicer 12 or a Spicer 3 anywhere. If the Spicer 18 was the Dana Corp’s first try at a transfer case, then it’s entirely reasonable to say they hit a homer with it, as it stayed in the jeep (though ratios and other minor changes were made) from 1941 to 1971, when the jeep started using a center pumpkin and the Dana 20 transfer case.
So, here’s some interesting facts I learned during my searches.
- The Dana Corp was originally founded as the Spicer Corp by Charles Spicer in 1904 when he was 29 to manufacture universal joints. Here’s an 83 page PDF book of the first 100 years of the company.
- The Spicer Corp’s success seems to be the result of the industry standardization around their products due to their high quality and competitive pricing.
- In June of 1940 during a meeting between Bantam, government, Spicer and Timken representatives, Bantam and Spicer worked out the details of the drive train, for which Spicer received 130,000 for the tooling costs. (from the m38a1 site). The front end was also worked out during this meeting by an engineer from Spicer.
- While the Willys used the passenger side drop transfer case (a spicer 18), the Ford Pygmy (Ford’s prototype jeep) and the Bantam BRC Mark I (the very first jeep prototype) and the BRC-60/Mark II (Bantam’s 2nd prototype) relied on a driver side drop transfer case from spicer that was also a Spicer 18. (Here’s more about it)
- I could only find 4 spicer transfer cases. The Spicer 18, 20, 23 (for Chevrolet 4wd conversions) and 24 (for Ford 4wd conversions) (see Napco history). There’s likely more, I just didn’t find any info about them.
- Charles Dana joined in 1913, injecting money into the company. In a couple years, Charles assumed the presidency.
- In 1946, the company was officially renamed the Dana Corp, which by that time was a holding company for Spicer as well as Parish, Salisbury, Brown-Lipe and others. The idea was to continue using the brand Spicer for the drive train products due to the strong brand name. For some reason, that’s not clear to me, over time the Spicer brand name seemed to disappear in favor of the Dana name.
Here’s some other links about this early history:
1959 CJ-5 Roseville, Ca $1900
This looks like a good price on a nice, upgraded CJ-5.

1947 CJ-2A Port Orchard, WA **SOLD**
UPDATE: Was $400. **SOLD**
Here’s a parts jeep. With the Dana 30 front and AMC 20 rear. The paint job is unusual. The back of this body appears solid (no tailgate). I’m wondering if that’s a DJ body.
“1947 Flat Fender Willy’s Jeep CJ 2A with roll cage. No transmission/transfercase. Mounts for small-block Ford (289 / 302). Original axles plus Dana 30 front and AMC 20 rear. Need the space more than I need the Jeep. $400 / obo.”

No engine and tranny.
“Hard to find Willys Jeep FC 150. A 1957 the first year made. This was bought by the Forest Service. Has some rust issues but a hard to find truck. The last owner install a Chevy 327 V-8. The motor doesn’t run and there’s no transmission, missing the seats. The bed that’s on the truck is worthless but the original rear fenders are in nice shape. go figure. This is a perfect truck for that head turning hot rod”
1957 FC-170 Burbank, CA **SOLD**
This is the second FC listed by this seller.
“Hard to find Willys Jeep FC 170. A 1957 the first year made. This was an old movie camera truck. The bed is missing. The cab is in real nice shape compared to most FC’s. Great cab corners and no rust around the windshield. The original 226 motor, trans and transfer case is there. There was a PTO that was removed so that’s why you see a hole in the back of the trans. All it needs is a plate made to cover the hole. The motor doesn’t run. Cracked windshield and door glass.”
Reader Q: Aftermarket steering wheel for early CJ-5
Tom’s looking for some options for putting a smaller steering wheel onto the original mid 50s steering column. I did a quick search, but didn’t locate any specific products.
I’ve always used later model tilt columns with the steering wheel shown to the right. It requires an adapter that slides on to the column (don’t have a pic of that).
Anyone else know of other options?
Builds — A CJ-3B that got away from Jim
Here’s a favorite CJ-3B that Jim owned, sold, but now wished he kept.
Jim writes, “This was super nice rig, built frame off, all stock, all new, immaculate, my girlfriend drove it alot and we should have kept it but was offered huge money and couldn’t say no.”
1953 CJ-3B Reno, NV **SOLD**
At first I thought that was rust on the body, but I think that’s the paint job.

1953 CJ-3A Fremont, Oh eBay .. interesting top
Check out the top on this flattie. It looks really well executed. I wonder if the windows roll down a little or not.

No pics. A project.
“It is a 1942 Jeep that is i mid restoration and curently apart. It still has all the parts and a few extra. If your interested let me know and I can take pictures.”
1941? MB Bayless, Mo $4000
Ok, so 80% restored doesn’t classify as almost finished. It’s a bit pricey for what appears to be a hefty project still. The body appears in pretty decent shape though.
“Here is your chance to own an ORIGINAL 1941 Willys, 80% complete!! It has primer on it and is ready to be painted, NO RUST!! NO BODY PUTTY, all original parts except for the wheels. Here is what is new: Brakes, Gas Tank, Windshield frame, Carb, Battery, Plugs, All bought from Swamps. 1950s CJ-3A Elkins, NH ebay (what a sales job)
The sale job on this just cracked me up.
- Claim #1: Good Condition for it’s age and a Rareity
- Claim #2: Jeep not running, but just some stuck valves; not a big deal to fix
- Claim #3: Needs floor panels, but the frame is very solid
- Disclaimer #1: I am not an expert on this
Ergo, why does the seller make the above claims if not an expert? I mean, I know why; it’s just funny to me.
Builds — CJ-2A Body and Frame Work by Mike
I ran across some extensively photographed and discussed body and framework (boxing in the frame) on the CJ-2A page forums. There are plenty of pics and four or more videos. There’s also some interesting discussions about dealing with hat channels: to fill or not to fill, that is the question (page 3 of the forum). So, if you are doing some body work on a CJ-2A, you’ll find this interesting.
The pic on the right show’s Mike’s first attempt at welding thin body metal. After some additional grinding and filler it looks like it will turn out great.

1947 CJ-2A Spokane, Wa $6500
UPDATE: New pics on the new ad
Clearly there’s been some mods to this vehicle. For example, the axles do not appear stock, it’s got a tilt column and, of course, a 400 small block.
