New earlyCJ5.com website emerging

• CATEGORIES: News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  The guys over at the earlyCJ5.com website have been working diligently to get the website back online.  They’ve updated the software, using wordpress as the new foundation (the same used here).  They have plenty of work left, but I think the results will be worth it!

(from May 8th) I’m sure some of you know that a virus/worm got into the earlyCJ5.com website and chewed up the content (that’s about the best metaphor I could come up with). In the meantime you can access earlyCJ5 regulars at http://www.universal5.com/ or follow the twitter feed at http://www.twitter.com/earlycj5. I wish them the best of luck in getting that great resource back online!

To hopefully keep this from happening to eWillys, I have a daily database backup emailed to me.

My Build — Fluid time

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  I added all the fluids.  I installed the battery holder and battery.  The new filler tube for the tranny got installed (though it was taller than the previous one, which meant it needed some adjustments to make it fit).

I flicked on my switches and, well, not much happened.  It seems there’s a problem with my Relay, so I’ll have to puzzle through the problem.  I did a temporary bypass of the relay and discovered that some things work and some things didn’t, so I’ve got some trouble shooting to do (no suprise there).

So, work continues … 🙂

I’m dropping in fluids …. hurray!  So far, only one major leak located.  I hadn’t tightened down one of the brake lines at the master cylinder, so brake fluid leaked down to the frame, melting off the paint … That’s now fixed!

I’ve got the engine oil in the engine.  The gear oil in the front and rear differentials and the transfer case.  I got a new dipstick tube for the th-350 and will install that and put in the first four quarts of tranny fluid.  I’ll need to get the engine started and work through the gears to get the fluid to disperse so I can add more.  I’ve read the total volume will be about 12 quarts.

I’ve tightened up all the tie rod bolts and will put in powersteering fluid.  I’ll work out the air bubbles once I start the engine by turning the steering from lock to lock, slowly, with the cap loose.

Finally, I plan to try to start the engine tonight.  No doubt, there will probably be some swearing involved and my sons will learn words they haven’t heard even on South Park!  lol.

So, lots on the agenda tonight!  Therefore, I’m delaying any update until tomorrow.

• CATEGORIES: M-38A1 This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This appears to be a good price for those interested in early M-38a1s.

Jenn asked me to post these.  She wrote, “We are asking $1500.00 for both. I would rather not part them out.  If bought together they would have a complete restored M38A1.

The green one has the original engine and converted to 12 volt. 4 inch lift, and locking front tires. Tires in good shape and have 1 brand new spare.

The sanded one is the better body. All rust spots have been patched and welded up. Floor has been rhino lined. Original tires and have 6 spares with tubes. This one has the original seats.  We are located in Lompoc California.  Email would be gtimesxu@yahoo.com or jennburmester@rocketmail.com

Art’s Bantam TC-3 Website

• CATEGORIES: Builds, trailer This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Art dropped me a note about his BantamTC3 website a couple days ago.  He’s building a website to compile Bantam T3-C information to share with the community interested in these trailers.

Art writes that he has been interesting in military vehicles since he was a child and had Chevrolet/GMC 4x4s ever since getting his driver’s license.  His interest in Willys Flat Fenders grew as a more affordable alternative to lift-kits, big tires and lots of u joints of the Chevys, especially after starting a family.   He also wanted to have more comfortable, safer, reliable vehicles for his family as well.

His current pride and joy is the Emerald Green 48 you will see on Art’s other website, 48cj2a.com.  The jeep (seen below) is about 99% original and driveable.  He also currently has a 1947, another 1948, and a demiled 53 M38A1 project that he needs to make more road worthy and then plans to sell.

Following his interest in jeeps, came an interest in trailers.  His Wife purchased him a M416 1/4 ton Military trailer one year for Christmas (hmmm .. does she have a sister?).  That lead him to do some 1/4 ton trailer research where he learned about the Bantam trailer.  Deciding the Bantam was more correct for the Civy Willys after the War in 45, he traded his 416 straight up a year ago for the Bantam T3-C he currently owns.  He is also working toward obtaining a second T3-C trailer.

As he did more research on Bantam T3-C trailers, he got frustrated with the lack of information; and thus, the BantamTC3 website was born.

Thanks for sharing Art!

John starts driving very early

• CATEGORIES: Reader Stories This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I know I started driving on dad’s lap when I was young, but John might just be the youngest jeep driver I’ve ever met.  Thanks for sharing John.  Here’s his story.

John writes, “Hi Dave, this is my story. At the age of 2years 10 months, I was put behind the steering wheel of a 1946 CJ2a (this was in 1955). My Dad had me with him one sunny fall day sowing wheat in the north 40. It was the field with a 1/2 mile lane to it. In the back of the willys were wheat seed bags.

As Dad would run out of wheat in the grain drill, he would walk back & bring the Willys to the drill fill it up and continue on. I got to nap on the seed bags, laying in the sun.  As I napped, Dad could watch me as he would make his rounds with the drill.

As Dad finished up the field we were on the opposite end from the gate out of the field. So, here comes my first Willys drive. Dad stood me up on the seat, put it in low range, pointed the jeep to the gate, and away I went. He drove along side me till we got to the gate, where he stopped me, and said “move over I’ll get you through the gate!”

He said I made a fuss about moving over, but, after he got the Willys through the gate, he turned me loose again for the 1/2 mile drive up the lane. Dad said I would lay on the steering wheel and let it roll me around.

My love of Willys Jeeps are deep rooted, and this story is special as it was told to me by Dad only a month before he passed away. Mom said if she had known this back then, I’d would never had gotten to go out with Dad again.

(We still have the 41 Ford Ferguson 9n, but the Willys has long been sold & Dad passed away in 1997, cancer got him at the age of 71.)

Jeep Caravan through Utah

• CATEGORIES: News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: This is the MPVA Carvan. Read more about it below.

A caravan of 50 or so old flatties (mostly military) with license plates from a variety of states was spotted heading down the new Legacy Highway (the new north/south alternative to I-15) in Utah yesterday.

A reader named George pointed me to the MPVA website to answer the questions of who, what, where and why.

From the MPVA Website, “As part of its mission to honor our country’s military vehicle history, the MVPA has decided to recreate the famous 1919 Convoy in 2009 as a 90th Anniversary celebration of the achievement and in conjunction with the nation’s President Lincoln Bicentennial celebration.

This is a Convoy of historic military vehicles – of all eras, from WWI through to current-issue military vehicles. The vehicle roster currently includes WWI “FWD” cargo trucks, through to Harley Davidson WLA motorcycles, staff cars and jeeps to later model M813 5-ton cargo trucks.

Learn more about this ongoing convey from the MPVA website.  The Convoy should be arriving in San Francisco on July 8th.
