UPDATE:  I’ve added some final information to this post …

After a great deal of research, I felt the best option for a bender for my purposes was to build my own.  I quickly settled on Frank Takac’s plans from gotTrikes.com. Frank was great to deal with,  responsive to my email and the plans were  professional with plenty of tips, pics and information.  Frank told me that a 15 year old successfully built one of his benders.  You can see a variety of benders built by purchasers of Frank’s plans at his website.  I can strong recommend these plans if you are considering building your bender.

PREVIOUSLY:

I’ve been slowly building my tube bender.  I followed most of the instructions I purchased (which were great — I’ll write more about that later), but I just couldn’t stand buying new metal when I had so much 1/4 inch angle iron laying around (thank you sis!).  So, I made several modifications based on the metal I had.

Also, during the process of building, I realized I just didn’t care whether the bender looked good (such as grinding welds, sanding it down, etc).  So, it is what it is.  I did have some leftover chrome paint, if not smooth, it is shiny.  I’m just waiting for a couple shafts to arrive in the mail and then I can start bending!

This is a project, but based on the parts list,  it sounds like it might be worth the price.  The front clip looks like it is fiberglass. I would guess the truck tranny is either a sm420 or sm456.  It’s difficult to see whether it would really only take a couple hours to make this run.

It has the 6 volt electrical system, with an electric fuel pump. Two alternators, three batteries, and a host of features make this an unusual vehicle.  The most recent cheap jeep was launched in 1974 for the purpose of desert and mountain travel, not unlike the way original mountain bikers back in 1976 utilized old tough schwinn bikes to tackle the mountains.  It’s singular purpose –the next ghost town or bust — was a cheap, but dependable vehicle capable of on road and off road travel for thousands of miles over the period of a week.  This vehicle is still used and images and video from 2009 can be found on the website along with links to all the places these intrepid adventurers have visited over the past years (scroll to the bottom of the homepage). cheapjeepSteve Ricketts writes on the westernghosts.com website,  In 1974, I acquired a 1966 Pontiac convertible from another customer.   This time the price was $75.00.   Like the Chrysler Imperial, the Pontiac needed a lot of work.   After extensive engine repair and a transmission rebuild and modification, it was able to be driven to my house where the first Cheap Jeep (Chrysler Imperial) was stored.  The transformation from old cheap jeep to new cheap jeep began.   The finished product is what you see today.

cheap_jeep4It is highly modified, and works better for our purposes than anything we could buy today.   It is easy to repair on the road, and parts are readily available.  It carries more than “regular” jeeps and is a lot cheaper to replace should it become necessary to abandon.   I would really hate to take a $30,000+,  four wheel drive (Blazer/Bronco, etc.) on one of these trips.   At the very least, the paint and body would be badly damaged.   It would also be next to impossible to repair in the field, and a very real possibility exists that I would someday have to abandon it.   After all these years of use and modification, I still have less than $800.00 invested in the Cheap Jeep…and that includes the original purchase price.”

This thing actually runs.  It sounds like this might be a good deal.  Plus, the seller needs to sell it quickly!!

“Unfortunatly, I have run into some finacial issues and am not able to do what I would like with this Jeep. I pulled it out of a barn on one of our farms after it had sat for probably 20 years; Replaced the fuel lines, put in new plugs, and flushed the tank FIRED RIGHT UP! It has the original engine in it not sure what exactly it is and i believe the axles are dana 44’s? The tires all hold air and has newer black wall wheels. There is no title for it willing to write a bill of sale but it is being sold as an “Off road Vehicle”. It does not have any seats and needs a new steering wheel as well as a battery but have one that I can throw in there to show you how well it runs. The Brakes will need a service aswell. The 4 wheel drive works very well and all gears work aswell. I am looking to get rid of this ASAP! So all offers are open for discussion.
