1946 CJ-2A Shippensburg, Pa $800

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Here’s a VEC CJ-2A with a snow plow.  The body doesn’t sound good.  No pics just yet.

“Just a feeler – I have an early 46 CJ2A with title. This is a column shift jeep that was a local find. It currently has a plow on the front, the frame is good on the jeep, needs new floor pans and windshield. It is a flat head 4 cylinder that I was told was used up until last year when the individual that owned it passed away. I have not tried to fire the engine up because there is no fuel tank and I wanted to change the oil first. Engine is complete all the way to the air filter and I have no reason to believe it won’t start right up. They were using a marine gas can in the back of the jeep to run it when they drove it but I left that there when I picked it up. Definately a diamond in the rough but the jeep sits up nice – tires are dry rotted but hold air. Pictures available upon request and if I have time later this evening I will post a few. I was keeping this one to fix up but have found a different project for $800 that I would like to buy instead. dangaruss@comcast.net.”

1945 Militarized CJ-2A – Sanford, ME **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A, MB • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $14,500

“Newly restored ”cloned Willys MB. This is a 1945 CJ2A modified to look like a 1944 MB. It is 99% done. It needs a little touch-up on the paint and a rear seat. I spent Thousands of dollars on new parts. I have all records of purchased items. I put one size larger tires on it to increase fuel mileage and travel speed. It runs and drives like new. The engine is smoke free and I changed the voltage to a 12-volt system for better lighting and dependability. I also added turn signals and a second rear brake light for safety. I also added new style seat belts to make it a safer vehicle. The entire Willys has been sandblasted primed and painted with late WW11 319 OD. I spent many hours disguising the CJ2A look. I would like to keep all the bags and supply’s that are all over it. The Shovel, Axe, Jerry can, rope and spare tire will stay with it.I still need to install the battery hold down. The top and seats are brand new, they are thicker than originals to make the ride a bit smoother. I also have a new glove box to install to make the dash look like the MB. The drive train is the way I bought it, so I don’t know how many miles are on them, but it goes down the road smooth.( I love it). The only reason for selling it is, I recently found a real 1942 GPW that needs restoring. I put about 1500 miles on it these past few months with no problems. The odometer reads about 7,000 miles. This is a nice vehicle that will last a long time with some care. Please call with any questions or if you want more pictures …. I also have some CJ3A parts for sale: Fisher plow set-up, complete windshield with new gaskets, new wiper motors, tool box cover, heater unit, new front seat frames, and complete drive line”

UPDATE:  Still Available.

If the seller really has 3.56 gearing, I’d like to know more about the tranny.  I also wonder if the OD trans is really a warn OD?  Seems a bit redundant to have both 3.56 gearing and the OD.  Toledo Or is west of Corvallis, Or, almost all the way to the coast.  Given the location, I imagine the seller will have to drop the price.

Builds: Jim finds a nice old CJ-3B

• CATEGORIES: Builds, CJ-3B • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Jim, take it away and thanks for sharing!

So I got a call today, woman says she has a1953 plow jeep she wants to get rid of. She said her deceased father, a mechanic, owned it for more than 40 years and used it to plow his business etc. When I hear plow jeep, Im thinking piece of rusty crap thats been worked to death etc. I have a driveway thats 1/3 of a mile long and I will need a plow this winter so I went to take a look.

Man, was I shocked, a completely (except orange paint) original 1953 CJ3B, 6 volt, uncut, runs great, has brakes, chains on all four studded tires, nice original seats, 15″ stock wheels, no rust to speak of, super straight, soft top frame with a tarp over it, still has the snap in carpet kit. Some one had obviously loved it for many, many years. Under that layer of dust is a really nice jeep and after a long heart to heart talk, its now mine for very little money!

I brought it home and tested it out.  Everything works great, brakes, heater etc but there is a weird knocking on the engine, seems to come go at time so Im thinking someone dropped a bolt or something into the carb and it is knocking on top of a piston. I will know for sure when I pull the head in a few days but overall it is in excellent condition. I couldnt tell you the last time I bought a flat fender with a full on complete snap in carpet kit, very cool!

I ran across this electric vehicle named Jazzy owned by Jim Stack.  It appears to be an ‘VEEP’ Kit with a fiberglass body.  It is powered by an Advanced DC FB-4001 Series Wound DC 9.  It runs in 3rd gear and never needs to be shifted, according to the owner.  The top speed is 70MPH with a total range of about 50MPH.  There are 10 Trojan T-105 now SG90’s, 12.00 Volt, Lead-Acid, Flooded very minimal battery pack for 30 mile range. All located under center of chassis for stable road handling, great G holding on corners.  View all the information here.

My Build: Roll Cage Day 2

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Well, I didn’t get as much progress done today as I planned (like I ever do?), mostly because I slept in — way in!  I spent much of the afternoon, moving, measuring, leveling, thinking and then removing, remeasuring, releveling … I think you get the picture.  It took me a while to realize that my windshield is a little crooked and that was throwing me off a little.  Once I figured that out,  I started making progress.

The first thing I did today was to brace the loops into place so I could start adding supports.  I did some cross tubes first.  This helped square the loops, which were off about half an inch each.  Once that was done, I started on the rear supports.  I’ve got a little grinding left on the driver’s side left rear piece then it will be ready to be tacked into place.

For my tube intersections, I’ve been using this tube coping calculator.  I found it off just slightly, but close enough to be of real value.  I taped the paper to a thin piece of cardboard (my Haagen Dazs Ice Cream boxes work great — A great excuse to get Dark Chocolate/Dark Chocolate Ice Cream Bars).

Tomorrow evening I’ll complete the back area and start to work on the top side pieces.

Here’s the only pic I have from tonight.

My Build: Bending the Rollcage

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit, Idea Factory, Roll Cage This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I spent much of the day doing the initial bending of my cage. I managed to complete the front loop and back loop. I was very pleased with the results and the bender. Thanks to Mitch for the front and back loop measurements. Those proved invaluable!

I will delay a discussion of my tube choice (size and type).  I spent A LOT of time researching various forums on the pros and cons of various sizes.  Then, there’s the whole DOM vs. HREW vs. CREW vs. Sched 40 vs. Chromoly … and more.  I’ve also been filing away various roll cage designs so that readers and builders can see all the different ideas.  In the end, my cage reflects the need to tie into my frame due to the fiberglass body, I also wanted it to look like my previous cage in my first jeep, and it includes a workaround for the mid loop attachment as I put the mid loop attachment closer to the seat then I wanted (oops). I also need to talk a little about the bender I built and the plans I used, but will save that for later too.

bender_first_bend

tube_cutterThe first thing I needed to do was calculate exactly how the bend of the tube changed the measurements and determine the inner and outer radius measurements so I could measure the loops correctly. I started by marking off a tube in 1 inch increments up to about 15″. Then I put the tube in the bender and bent the tube. I learned that my 2″ die created an outer radius of 7.5″ and the length of a 90 degree bend from start to finish was 10″.  You can see the inch markers and the tube cutter I was using in the pic to the right.

Another thing I learned was that I had to bend the tube about 3 degrees past the amount I wanted, as it would spring back 3 degrees when released from the bender (you can see it bent past 90 in the pic below).

Knowing that information, I measured and bent the front loop. The first two bends of 90 degrees went smoothly. Then, I cut down the bottom pieces so that, after I added the windshield contours, the front loop would measure 45″ from the loop to the floor boards. Next, I bent the loop with the windshield angle. My windshield sits at an angle of 15 degrees and the bend needed to start 20″ from the floor board. These also bent perfectly.

bender_back_loop_2ndbend

bender_front_loop

So far so good.

Next was the back loop. Based on Mitch’s measurements and the look I was after, I decided that 43″ from the loop to the back floor would be a perfect distance. I made the width the exact distance between the body sides, which is slightly narrow than a standard jeep due to the wider lip on the fiberglass body. Again, the 90 degree bends went perfectly. Then, I had to do 45 degree bends back towards the body. Unfortunately, after testing the loop on the jeep, 45 degrees wasn’t the angle I actually needed, so I had to bend both sides twice in order to increase the angles to the point where it would work correctly.

bender_midloop_beforebend

bender_back_loop_4thbend

Here’s a poor quality shot from my camera phone of both loops in their respective places.

bender_2loops

With the two toughest parts of the cage out of the way, the sun set and I moved inside. I also was getting a little tired, because when I attempted to bend the back supports, I managed to bend BOTH wrong — one was bent the wrong angle and one was bent in the wrong location. Fortunately, I can salvage the tube and use them in other places. At that point, I thought it best to head inside and cook dinner.

More pics tomorrow night.
