(12/30/09) Here’s a whole bunch of jeeps for sale.
“I have several CJ3a’s and CJ3b’s for sale – in various conditions and stages of restoration – or I will build to your specification. Please call or email for additional details………. Thanks for looking – Roger at 360-239-8428 or gram26@hctc.com”
I suspect this does not have an overhead cam and it certainly is not all original for the year. Brett called on this and the seller mentioned the engine does smoke. The body appears solid.
“1949 Willy’s Jeep 1.34 engine with overhead camshaft everything is orginal for the year, but not necassariy for this particular Jeep. runs good, but burns oil, transmission slips out of second.”

UPDATE: Price dropped to $3000
(05/04/2010) I think I’d swap on a different windshield, otherwise, this looks like a build ready for some trails. The tires and rims have to be worth a good chunk of money.
“1952 Willys M38A1, Ford 2.0 motor swap, full roll cage, brand new 32×9.0 Super Swampers Tsl, Hardtop with doors, comes with spare axles, drivelines and tranny, transfercase. be willing to trade 67 or earlier vw bus. Call Ryan

A student from Mississippi State University named Cliff contacted me yesterday. He’s in the Aerospace program and also employed at the Raspet Flight Research Lab. The lab owns and operates the M-38 Fire Jeep shown below. They have a problem with their jeep and need some help.
According to Cliff, the M-38 had developed a knock (after being loaned out temporarily), so Cliff and another co-worker tore the engine apart during some down time recently.
Cliff writes, “Here comes the bad news, once we got the motor on the stand and pulled the rod caps we find that the rod bearings on the 3rd and 4th cylinders have ground in to nothing, which was thought to be the case when a ton of metal shavings were found in the oil pan. The motor is not original to the jeep, it had been replaced in ’88 with an F-head and a hole cut in the hood to accommodate it, and seems to be a rebuilt engine because the crank has already been turned once. So here is the dilemma. The lab is low on money and is not wanting to pay a lot for repairs but many of us here would like to save the jeep from the scrap yard and return it to its duties as our fire truck. So I am here to ask for your help in saving this Jeep, we are in need of a new crank and badly need a new wiring harness and am asking for donations on these parts but am also willing to trade the entire F-head motor(which other then needing a new crank is in great shape) for a L-head motor.”
I responded to Cliff to see if I can get a little more information about this project and what else they might need (for example, bearings, seals, etc) to get this running again.
Unless someone wants to contact Cliff themselves (I’ll be happy to forward an addy) and provide assistance (maybe you live close or graduated from the Mississippi State or for some other reason), I will be happy to organize some help for Cliff and his project.
Here are some pics of the jeep before disassembly:

(03/24/2010) “53 M38 flat fender jeep. Last of the military flat fenders. Has a hard top with data tags. Jeep has a 302 engine in it and it ran when I fired it up. But the master brake cylinder was in need of rebuilding so I never drove it. Body needs work done. Dash has section for emergency brake cut out? and while all gauges are there the plate they mount in is gone. Body is rough. Has larger tires and needs radiator installed. The top in the picture is not the top it has on it now. that was a home made top and like I said it now has a M38 top. Has floating rear axles. Might trade for hunting items or military collectibles or gas station collectibles. I have too many jeeps and trying to clean up around here. Looking also for 48 1 1/2 ton with dump bed for parts.”
While it was cold and rainy, mixed with, gulp, a little snow here in Boise, weather improved out in Ohio for the Midwest Willys Reunion. Both Bob and Brian snapped a variety of images and gave their own perspectives
Bob writes, “Much better weather today in the mid 70s. There looked to be about 100 Jeeps of all sorts today. There were lots of Cj2as and 3as, three CJ3Bs, and lots of truck and wagons. A whole lot to look at! The little Jeep dispatcher [the red jeep a few pics down] was very cool and sold for around $5500. Also, there were lots of parts to be had. Tomorrow is supposed to be in the high 80s.”
Hey Bob, what is sticking out of the side of the yellow flattie? Is it an air cleaner? Is the ‘windshield’ glass or plexiglass?
What’s the color on this flattie, red or orange or a blend? I like the color. Nice dually, too!
This is the DJ-3A that sold. Are these DJ-3A windshields taller than a CJ-3B windshield? Or were they simply re-purposed for the DJ-3A?
I’m assuming that is an aftermarket bumper? I can’t say I’ve seen one of these on any jeeps for sale that I have seen.
Brian seemed to be captivated by the trucks and wagons during this visit. He captured some great pics of Chad’s project (Chad received the Toledo Brick award, something the Reunion staff has been doing for several years now. It’s a brick from the old Jeep plant in Toledo.) and a pic of his favorite at the show, this wagon below (click on the pic to get a much larger pic).
Here’s images of Chad’s truck:
And 2 other wagons:
Steve was wondering if any readers knew anything about this aftermarket bumper found on some trucks (I’ll have to look back at some other images, but I know I’ve seen this or something similar on other trucks). I guess it is time to add a ‘bumper mod’ section to the modifications area.
Steve writes, “I Have the following wagon bumper and wondered if anyone knew anything about it? The tag says Ricks Trailer Works, 2003 East Van Buren Street, Phoenix, Arizona. I used to see these on a few wagons, but haven’t in quite a while. My wagon with this came out of Utah. It looks like a nice practical bumper, but haven’t decided how to use it yet. Thought it might be a modification people find interesting.”
This looks great.
“1950 Willys CJ3A. 15000 actual miles. New tires, new brakes and clutch. Recent valve job. Solid original floors and hat channels. Dualmatic hubs. Great example-you won’t be disappointed.”
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $3950.
I believe this is a DJ-3A has been changed to four wheel drive, though it’s listed as a ’56 on the Ad title and a ’65 within the text of the Ad.
“1965 WILLY’S JEEP with a Chevy engine in excellent condition.”
This might be pretty nice. The towel between the hood and windshield suggests the owner has been at least somewhat careful with it.
“1953 willys jeep. recently painted. passanger seat needs refinished. runs excellent. 5000 OBO.”
It runs, but needs work.
“1950 Willly’s Overland Jeepster Convertible. Only 19,000 ever made. Car runs but needs restoration. Mechanics manual available.”
