Biscuit’s Gas Pedal Design

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

When I built my first jeep, I used the gas pedal from a CJ-5.  It was fine for driving around on flat smooth roads, but when I hit a bump, my foot tended to flop against it, which meant I would accelerate unintentionally.  It was just too sensitive an arrangement (dad used a CJ-5 pedal in his CJ too and had the same problem).

Eventually, I found a solution to the pedal problem. However, it took a bad day of racing to get there ….

Early in the Spring of 1985 I was at a PNW race competing in a team relay event somewhere north of Everett, Wa.  I remember the conditions clearly:  It was cold, it was damp, and it was rainy.

Jim, Tim, and Steve Carter and I teamed up for the relay event.  Between us we had three jeeps (my jeep, Otis and Priority I — or maybe II or III — I can’t keep track of all the Priority versions …).

It seems to me we advanced to the first round with no issues.  However, during the second round, things went awry.  Frankly, the precise details of how the rest of the race played out have faded with time.  What I do remember is this; First, my front driveline broke as I made my way around the course.  Then, when driving Priority, I broke its front drive line.  Finally, when driving Otis, I was trying to drive carefully as I REALLY, REALLY didn’t want to break another driveline.  At one point I got a little stuck (it was really muddy) and thought I had broke it (ugh!).  Fortunately I didn’t … I was perfectly happy to stop racing that day (we got eliminated in the 3rd round I think).

I tell this story, because while racing Otis, I noticed that my foot didn’t bounce and nor did the pedal no matter what bumps I encountered.  It was solid, yet the pedal depressed when necessary.

Later in the day, after racing, I looked at Otis’ pedal and discovered Jim had set it up so that the there was a roller behind the pedal.  While more complicated than the normal pedal, it really improved the ability to keep driving and accelerating smoothly over bumps.

So, I implemented that in my first build and loved the results.  I had hoped to implement the same thing in Biscuit using a classic foot shaped pedal like the Moon Aluminum Pedal. However, I couldn’t justify the cost (read here that my budget was getting tight), so I implemented what I call Version 1.0 of the pedal.

Using some aluminum plate I already had, I drew the shape of my foot onto the plate, cut it out, and then shaped it with my grinder.  Then, I went down to a locate skateboard shop and purchased some skateboard covering (sandpaper-like on the front and sticky on the back).  I cut the covering into the shape of the foot and stuck it onto the plate.  It isn’t beautiful, but it works well.

I’d like to clean up some of the rough edges in Version 2.0.  Below are some pics and a highly(?) technical schematic.

BTW, that race was the last day I broke a driveline.  I’ve never had a problem since.

7th Annual Jeep and Willys Day in Wrightwood, Ca Sat Oct 9, 2010

• CATEGORIES: Event This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

If you are in the LA area, this might be fun.

“I would like to invite everyone to the seventh annual Wrightwood Jeep and Willys Day event that will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2010 in the beautiful mountain town of Wrightwood, California from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
This event is completely FREE and a great time for all.

They close down the main street through town and from approximately 9am until 2pm all the Jeeps and Willys fill the street almost like a car show but more of a meet and greet. Then, at around 2pm everyone takes a parade style run somewhere in the local mountains, returning to town by around 4pm. (Exact destination of the run, not yet determined). Parking in the participation area is reserved for any Jeep or Willys vehicle. However, there is plenty of parking for others and all spectators are welcome!”

Yakima Daily Republic reports on First Naches Crossing

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Based on the below news report,  August of 1950 was the very first crossing of the Naches Trail by the Yakima Ridge Runners.  This information resides on the Nachestrail.org website.

Something I didn’t know about this first crossing was that the jeepers had to use winches to drop their jeeps over the cliff on the west side, just as pioneers had done almost 100 years before (well, they used freshly made cowhide ropes instead of winches).

Note that in transcribing this article into PDF form, the transcriber couldn’t identify everything, so there are a few uncomplete hiccups in the text.

Though the article includes no images, only 9 months later many of these same folks and their jeeps would be photographed by Life Magazine playing in the Yakima Valley hills, sagebrush and mud (included below).  You can see all the pics from that here.

Jeeps Follow Trail Carved by Naches Pass Emigrants
08-15-50
By Ted Van Arsdol, Yakima Daily Republic

Ninety-seven years after the first wagon train crossed Naches Pass through the trackless Cascades, 11 Yakima jeep drivers, members of the Ridge Runner club, have completed the same rugged journey.

The jeep caravan returned here yesterday after following the forest-grown trail across the mountains. The jeep riders lowered their vehicles by chains and a winch down the steep face of a cliff on the west side. It was on this same cliff that pioneers of 1853 were forced to dismantle their wagons and lower them by ropes.

W R. (Wally) Klingele, one of the Ridge Runners making the trip said. The group could still see traces of the old wagon trails and the ancient cuts on trees that probably were made by the pioneers. He said there were also grooves on the west side cliff made by the sliding covered wagons.

First Four-Wheel Repeaters

“I believe our trip over the old road was the first one made by four-wheeled vehicles since the pioneer trek,” Klingele said. He had heard of motorcycles going over Naches pass, but doesn’t believe they went down the face of the cliff as the jeeps did.

Members of the Ridge Runners who made the trip were Chet Thompson, Dale Rohn, ___ Golsh, Gordon Buckley, Harlan Beckett, Lyle Christopherson, __ King, Bob Schultz, Pat Mullins and Klingele. Roger Gervais, jeep club initiate, also made the mountain trek.

The group had gone into the [?pass] one week ago from Timothy meadows to Government meadows. They left Saturday from the mouth of American river, went about seven miles by road to Jungle creek camp and then journeyed on by jeep trail to Timothy meadows.

Had to Carve Road
They camped overnight at Timothy meadows and started at [??] am Sunday on the trip through the woods. It took 11 hours for the caravan to cover the 10 miles to the pioneer cliff. The drivers had to cut and clear a road using shovels and axes.
To reach the bottom of the cliff on the other side, the Ridge Runners hooked one jeep to a tree by a chain, and the man in the jeep used a winch to lower other vehicles down the cliff.  [?] used a crank to unwind the winch, while the other Ridge Runners worked with the jeep being lowered to make sure it didn’t go astray.

The 150 foot dropoff was steeply sloped but had a number of ledges. It took 2 1⁄2 hours to lower all the jeeps. The toughest part of the trip came at the end. Yakima’s jeep club spent eight hours covering a mile and a half of the most rugged sort of mountain terrain. The foliage was heavy and many fallen rocks and logs hampered their machines.

After 21 hours on the trail the Road Runners reached Hines forest camp on the west side at 3 yesterday. They covered just 14 miles from the end of the trail at Timothy meadows to the forest camp.

Hungarian Jeep Site with many Pics

• CATEGORIES: Website This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Earlier in this decade, I drove through part of Hungary.  I dropped in from Slovakia, stayed in Budapest and then drove north into Austria.  Some people call Paris the city of love, but I’m pretty sure that title belongs to the city of Budapest — there was lots of kissing and hugging all over.  And I enjoyed my fair share of it too there …. I also went to my first true European ‘bath’ while I was there; the description that comes to mind was crowded and disorienting.  There was no kissing and hugging in there and, frankly, I was happy about that.

My understanding of Hungarian isn’t very good; the number of consonants to vowels made any attempts to pronounce town names and words an act of folly.  However, despite that,  I still found this Hungarian jeep site enjoyable: http://ww2jeep.gportal.hu .  I’ve seen many of the pics on this website elsewhere and some nowhere.
