Gerald’s Adventures with Snow Plowing

• CATEGORIES: News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Gerald recently sold his snow plow.  Through a few email exchanges, I learned snow plowing was always an adventure, but not always fun ….

Geralds writes, “Plowing was fun as long as it was just for me. The Jeep did a great job. One of the odder experiences occured when plowing long lanes and roads:  the jeep would go silent.  After spending some time wondering why this occurred, I finally figured out that so much water was coming into the engine compartment that the belt would just slip and then the motor would go quiet.  It seems that most of the noise from a stock Willys comes from the fan, especially in low range it is the steel blade that makes the most noise.

Seems like everyone would call and want me to plow their places out with “that Jeep” I had.  It was hairy out on the road with the plow.  The weight would come off the back wheels and the jeep wanted to turn around.  And the roads would always be bad since that is when the snow came.  I ended up putting about 300 pounds of sand bags in the bed.  Here is a pic of me plowing one day.

The biggest frustrations I had was that sometimes old ladies (and men) would bitch about how I pushed the snow and ask if I could move it over about 2 feet or so, or complain that I was digging up the grass at the edges of their yard and driveways; all this after almost killing myself getting to their place to make a couple bucks.  And I wasn’t the only ones who had a problem with the slick roads, as you can see from the picture I took below …

Also, it would be hard on the old girl;  when going to the neighbors or misc old folks who needed a plow, salt on the road became the enemy.  It isn’t even the plowing so much as the tons of salt that would find there ways into every nook and cranny on the jeep.  Since there was no chance to wash a jeep in freezing temperatures, the salt caused rust to invade the original body on my 3B.  So, when I rebuilt her I had to replace the body.

But, like the picture above shows, it was fun some times too.  My jeep was a plow jeep its whole life until the restoration in 2006.  No more work for it as my driveway is only about 300 feet; So, if I need to plow, I just get out in the snow with my 84 John Deere 318 (or my neighbors bobcat when things get really bad). (See more pics of Gerald’s 3B, before and after the rebuild)”

Museums: BRC-60 #7 at the Heinz History Center

• CATEGORIES: Museums This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

According to a report by Jim Allen in Offroad Adventures in 2005, there was a BRC-60 on loan to the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.  This BRC-60 was donated to the Smithsonian back in 1944.  It is the only known survivor of the first 70 BRC-60s (preceded by the BRC and followed by the BRC-40s) built by Bantam.

Anyone know if it is still there?

Here are two images from Jim Allen’s article:

And from a Belgium Jeep site comes this shot of a BRC-60

And I’m not sure where I found this …

Year? CJ-3A Comanche, TX **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $800.

This might be a good parts jeep.  The windshield and frame look good.

“NO TITLE. 1949-51 Willys Jeep CJ-3A. Last registered in 1988. According to the guy I bought it from, it was being used for pulling a brush hog (mowing) until recently and the last registered owner was in the West Texas (Abilene) area. Jeep is intact with good windshield, headlight bezels, grill, hood and other parts. Also, engine is dis-assembled but appears to be complete. It is a flathead 4 cyl. As you can see, all tires are on the vehicle and hold air; spare is also mounted on the side and appears that it is new, although weathered. Plenty of good parts available; transmission and transfer case; engine; front and rear axles; tow bar and rear step with trailer hitch, and a PTO. According to my internet research, this was specifically built as a farm use vehicle, hence the PTO and what appears to be a belt drive. I bought this from a friend who became disabled and needed the money, but I have too many other projects to take on this one at this time. Questions? e-mail me.

Sam Installs a Rack & Pinion Prototype

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Sam, from Flatfender Willys in Colorado, mentioned a few months ago that he figured out how to easily install an off-the-shelf Rack & Pinion into a flattie.  He’s installed over 10 of these over that past few years in various rigs with great success.

A number of readers asked for more information.  However, Sam chose to delay the information so that he could work with the maker of the R&Ps to develop a Rack designed especially for Jeeps — from old flatties through Wranglers.

What you will see below is the protoype built by the company that Sam has installed into Craig’s CJ-3B.  These are early pictures of the process.  Once Sam finishes testing this prototype, they’ll be available for sale.

1. This first image shows the Rack tucked neatly under the cross member.

2. Here is an underside look at the setup.

3. Here’s a look at the 7/8″ tubing (I think I have that right).  The basic Rack was originally designed for a 4000lb truck and then was modified for the Jeep to insure it was strong enough to handle a variety of situations.

4.  For the typical installation, you’d leave the stock shock mount (if you have a mount there), and cut the plate flush with the frame.  Otherwise, you can just bolt the plate into position.  In this case, Sam had made a change to the suspension and moved the mount down.

5. This image shows that the Rack has an even lower profile than the stock system.  Note how far lower the stock system extends.

6. This image shows the 1/2″ plate to which the Rack mounts.  shows the Rack doesn’t extend far outside the frame.

A WWII Courier Willys

I don’t know anything about this particular jeep except that it is called the “Dixie Flyer”.  It seems to be a modified MB with a ‘Courier’ sign in the front and some modifications to the fenders.  It also appears to have a gas tank on the passenger side (I think that is what is sticking down under the passenger?).  I found this image on the European Center of Military History’s Blog.

Hein & Family Explore Oz in a Jeep

• CATEGORIES: International, Reader Stories, Trips This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Hein, his wife and their daughter took a 16 day trip in September, 2010, into Australia’s Outback.  Hein provides this report and these images of his great adventure. If you missed it, one of their more memorable encounters was with the Camel Man, which I reported a few days ago.  Thanks for taking the time to share this with us Hein!

Hein writes, We had a Fantastic trip through the Outback, not totally without its “interesting” moments! We broke the trailer chassis completely on day 2,  blew a tyre in the middle of the desert and had to replace that, but the Jeep ran like clockwork trough some extremely harsh terrain.

Some of the roads were so corrugated that even with soft tyres we vibrated clean off the road at 20 to 40 kmh; then there were other sections where we plowed differential-deep trough clay and mud for hundreds of kilometres at a time, but all in the name of FUN!

We covered over 7,000 km (4350 miles) in the 2 weeks, 80% off sealed roads, and camped wherever we got to each day. The average fuel-consumption was just a fraction better than my 7.5 km/L expected, with the average price of fuel about $ 1.75 /L due to transport-costs to these remote locations.  It was certainly a trip to remember!

Day 1) We left Brisbane heading due-west trough some farming-country and camped on the bank of an abandoned road-quarry with looming rain-clouds Everywhere!

Day 2) It rained quite heavy during night.  We had to pack-up in the rain and head out further west into ever more sparsely populated areas, encountering the first of many roads closed or severely-damaged due to flooding.  As a result: the next town was already out of Fuel! The last 100 km of Adventure-Way into Innamincka was barely passable even in 4wd. We passed a few abandoned trucks already stuck axle-deep, pummeled by constant rain.

The light was fading and we had no idea where or if we are going to reach somewhere to sleep. Needless to say, the family was extremely Anxious and Scared! Well after dark we continued travelling, the road now an Absolute Quagmire that the Jeep can barely crawl trough in 2nd/3rd gear.

As we approached about the hundredth floodway (normally dry , now a Raging-River), this one more churned up than most by some previously-stuck truck, I had to really nurse and cajole the jeep to get trough. Slip, slide, bounce, repeat was the process until we barely make it up the opposite bank.

However, there was a casualty, the trailer now sat at a Very Disturbing angle. I launched myself out with the camera and ratchet-strap into the pouring rain and ankle-deep mud, with daughter crying and wife not looking too happy either.  Fortunately, my wife is a farm-girl and trusted that I would make a plan.  A few minutes later I had the trailer strapped together and we limped into town after another half-hour, and one last river-crossing, straight into the Hotel!

Day 3) With the trailer needing repair, I had to unload everything and find Kbong, a local Trucky with the only workshop in town.  After moving the family to a camp in the National Park across the river, I would spend the rest of the day cutting out the remains of the rusted and broken frame.  Then in the afternoon, I built a much-sturdier new, vastly-improved little red-trailer, from the only length of 2 1/2″ Square-tubing in town.  Then, I got to immediately test it by crossing the now flooding river to meet up with the family at the National Park!

Museums: MB at the Cole Land Transporation Museum

• CATEGORIES: Features, MB, Museums This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This MB is located at the Cole Land Transporation Museum in Bangor, Maine, and has an interesting history.  According to the museum’s website, “his 1945 jeep served with the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe. After the war, it was given to the French government (French nomenclature in still on the dashboard). It was rebuilt by the French, declared surplus, and shipped to Duryea Motors, Brockport, New York in 1982. Galen Cole purchased it for display in the Museum.

Perhaps its greatest claim to fame is that the mold for the Maine World War II Veterans Memorial, located on the Museum’s grounds, was formed around this jeep; therefore, the jeep that is the focus of the Memorial is an exact replica of this jeep. It was chosen as the symbol of WWII because personnel of all branches of the service during that war used jeeps-whether generals, admirals, or privates.”

Tips & Tricks: Sealing Body Seams

• CATEGORIES: Tips & Tricks This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Frank suggested the following, “a suggestion, which I have done myself, is anyone who may be building a Jeep with a new metal body try sealing all the seams where the floor or rear fenders contact the body with urethane sealer (in the caulking tube). It’s about $10 or $15 a tube as I recall. Just make sure that all the surfaces you apply it to are clean and dry.

Since the main reason Jeeps rust (I believe) are all the seams and crevices that hold water, sealing out the water should help. Urethane is also sandable and paintable. It is used for installing windshields on late model cars and trucks which makes the glass an integral and structual part of the body in an accident.”
