Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. For those going to the Willys Picnic this year, it sounds like he will be bringing it along (June 12th Kempton, PA).
Dave asked me about the type of adapter used on DJ-3As and FJs to connect an automatic transmission (which may have been the Borg Warner model 12 according to David Sapp mentioned in his comment to this post, though I have no documented evidence of this, but it should be out there somewhere). Essentially, a adapter plate is bolted to the back of an L-head/F-head engine, to which the transmission bell housing attaches.
After some searching, Dave spotted the adapter in an FJ supplement book. Here are the pics.
Meanwhile, a discussion from 2012 on the topic of DJ-3A automatic transmissions yielded these pics showing a BW transmission connected to an L-head with a similar looking plate.
As for the rare shifter that’s been captured in some pics, this pic is the best I have (from a DJ-3A automatic). It confirms Barry Goodwin’s comment on another post that the transmission lacked a “Park” feature. Instead, the driver would put it in neutral when parking (and I assume pull the parking brake).
If anyone has a document that confirms it was the M-12 BW transmission that was used, or has more pics or is aware of other useful discussions on this topic, please let me know. There isn’t much info about these setups on the web.
FYI: Based on my research, it appears the Willys Aero cars of the 1950s used a GM Hydramatic rather than a BW transmission.

Listed as a 1948 and described as a CJ-2A, this seems closer to a CJ-3A.

This wagon has some rust and damage in the rear, but otherwise appears in decent shape. It might be worth a look.

“This is a repost of an original listing I mistakenly first put under auto parts. Its listed here as a Wrangler because FB doesnt offer any selections for ww2 stuff. This is a posting for a 1942 Ford GPW, and a body tub for a 1943 Ford GPW, and lots of miscellaneous parts. Also, for sale seperately is a 1943 MB trailer. ***I DONT HAVE EXTRA PARTS*** I restored a GPW a few years back, with the intention to restore at least one more jeep. “Hazzard Fabworx of Spokane has reworked the suspension, power steering, changed out all the fluids, battery, serviced the diffs/transmission/transfer case/overdrive, swapped in disc brakes all around (‘94 Geo Tracker) and installed lap seat belts. It has an “odd fire” V6 motor, Dana 30 front/Dana 44 rear both with 4.27 gears, T90 3-speed transmission, Dana 18 transfer case and a Warn overdrive. I will say the original overdrive was a Warn but the owner before me had it rebuilt by Herm The Overdrive Guy in Washington, so it’s physically a Husky case now. It also has a Warn 4500 lb winch mounted on the front. The odometer reads 30k and change. The thing still runs and drives great. It doesn’t burn oil and still has the original VIN plate. The story I got when I bought it was that it was a forestry service jeep in Oregon, hence the decals”

I have many extras, including aluminum chassis, motors, differentials, electrical parts/harnesses, axles, etc. I’m selling everything in a package deal, and I’m unwilling to split/sell it as individual pieces. Driven into an enclosed barn, CA’s high desert (dry climate/no rust) about ten years ago has been untouched. The Jeep was purchased, used, and owned by my dad, who passed away. “I have owned this for three years, and basically the only time I touched it is to move it from the garage to the shed. I am selling it to buy a first motorcycle, so if you have any trades, feel free to shoot me an offer. The engine, transmission, and transfer case are out of it, but I have them all.
