“Wow this is cool – what kind of Jeep is this exactly? From Europe? South America? Is this Korean war era? Falkland Islands? Northern Ireland? These are the kinds of questions I get which is a lot of fun. If you don’t like attention, this is not the Jeep for you.

It started out as a retired postal Jeep (DJ5). I’ve since extensively modified it to be of roughly the same dimensions as the rare Willys CJ6. Frame stretched 18” with lots of hand fabricated body modifications, roll bars, etc. Custom safari top (the only top), new seats & seatbelts, Bluetooth stereo. I tossed the tired 4-banger and swapped in a stout Ford 302 & C4 automatic. Engine has 351 heads, 4bbl, new electronic distributor, water pump, radiator, exhaust manifolds, battery, etc. etc. Fairly aggressive cam, sounds great. Way more motor than this light truck needs, but it is fun.

Jordan offered to share some pics of his uniquely modified CJ-5. It’s a pretty cool jeep with lots of details. It looks like it was a serious jeep for off road exploration. Here’s Jordan’s story:

I call it the GoGo Gadget Jeep. I bought this CJ-5 about 7 years ago in the foothills between Sacramento and Tahoe. The guy I bought it from had not had it very long and had not done much with it. He bought it from the estate of the guy who built it. It probably sat around since the early ’90’s when the guy died or just stopped driving it.

Apparently the original owner did search and rescue work with it in the Sierras. I have taken some stuff off that I did not want, a rack over the rear bumper, 9 horns, a single side band radio, a winch fairlead that folded down (probably built to pull rigs up cliffs), and a few other things.

The wiring is still a mess, but I am driving it around the Estacada, Oregon, area. It came with a brand new in the box full top (white), the bikini top in the pice, a worn out full top, some extra motor parts (Buick 225), a second set of tires that are in some of the pictures-I had to get new rims because I got 5 tires, but 3 rims of one type and 3 of another), and a few other odds and ends.

The extra set of tires are Goodyear Wrangler Mud Grips. I have only found one picture of them online, and no info.

It runs great with about 40,000 miles, overdrive, PTO Winch, turning brakes (those are the tall levers between the seats). The levers between the seats are the turning brakes, then the PTO engagement lever, then the overdrive lever, and then the shifter. The transfer case shift or is down below the dash.

I wish I would have met the guy that built it. It seems he was an aerospace engineer, based on some of the stickers on it. It may be that someone on your site will recognize the jeep. I would love to hear from them if so. I imagine that it was well known when it was running around the Sierras way back when.

“1969 Jeep Cj5 chassis with a 1946 Cj2 body. Mild cam Chevrolet 350 with an Edlebrock 650cfm 4 barrel carburetor. Dana 44 front and rear axles. (Gear ratio unknown, but they’re low.) Dana 18 Twin Stick transfer case. (Already disassembled and cleaned for rebuild. The rebuild kit is included.) Freshly rebuilt TH-350 auto transmission with new converter, and Novak adapter kit for the transfer case. Used Griffin aluminum radiator. 12″ dual core radiator with integral electric fan. Blaine found this unusual CJ-5. The seller claims it was special ordered by Henry Kaiser, then given to the Boy Scouts. Hopefully, the seller can substantial the claim. Even without that pedigree, this is an awfully stock jeep in very good shape.

This CJ-5 has an M-38a1 “arctic” top with the wood doors. It seems in reasonably good shape. The side of the body threw me a bit as it appears to lack the “JEEP” stamps on the cowl sides. However, the passenger side looks like it may have had some bondo work, so that may explain why this lacks the stamp (likely either cut and repaired OR bondoed over OR both).

The seller included pics of a text message where some anonymous expert labeled the jeep a “ch3a”[assuming they meant CJ-3A), based on the “one-piece windshield”. The texter continued, writing, “In military lingo I believe it is a m38 … My best guess it is a 47/48 is is definitely military because of the gas cap.”

1962 Article on a CJ-5 Build

This May 1962 article in Four Wheeler magazine highlighted a few things. First, it’s a really clean build. I wish the pics were in color, as it’s deserving of some great photos.

Second, if I understand correctly, the rear bumper is actually a gas tank. I’m not sure I like that plan so much.

Third, given this jeep is near Colorado Springs, it probably has the Thor Electro-matic hubs, which allow a push button engaging of the front hubs. And, because they are short hubs, the front wheel covers can be placed over them.

Fourth, this has an early vacuum brake assist. Herm carries a newer version of this.

Fifth, the White top on this jeep is beautifully styled in my opinion.

“I have had a 1946 Willys for a long time with the plans to bring it back to life but I don’t have time or money for it.
This is an old picture.
I have a 350 bare that would come with it. Transmission and transfer case that line up with it. It is now sitting on a CJ5 frame which is heavier duty. I have a sand blasted hood, windshield frame, and tailgate. I hve 2 original Willys metal seats and the fuel tank that goes under the seat. I’m Sure I’m missing something.
