Gary contacted me tonight to ask if I knew which year of jeep body my father used for his CJ-5 rebuild. It was a good question I didn’t know. I’d never studied the Renegade stripes. My research was not exhaustive on this, so please feel free to correct any mistakes.
Based on my review, I believe my Dad’s body came from a 1974 CJ-5. I started with the below picture.
I looked up 1971 and 1972 bodies. During those years the Renegade had a straight stripe that didn’t drop over the side of the cowl as you can see below:
In 1973 the renegade had a straight back, then drop-angled stripe:
In 1974, the stripe fell straight as seen in these photos:
Possible Late 1974 Style? Notice how the name drops lower. This stripe is being sold on eBay as a 1974/1975 style.
Here’s another example, though this jeep was listed as a 1973 (can’t find the original link). It may actually have been a 1974:
Here’s another jeep listed as a 1974:
In 1975, the style changed to one that dropped, then went straight back.
Bob forwarded this cute photo from Facebook.
I ran across this unusual ad for the complete setup for an unusual 4×4 in the February 1964 issue of Four Wheeler Magazine. The prototypes and parts were being sold by Vic Hickey (or he was acting as an agent). Anyone have more information on this? It appears to be a four wheel drive dune buggy.
I’m guessing this is a plastic from piece from a sign?
“Vintage JEEP truck dealer sign. This is from a lighted sign. Measures roughly 46″ x 49″. Call 33o-8ol-l4ol.”
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was listed at $600.
This shouldn’t last long. It’s got an overdrive and it runs! If it were near me I’d buy it.
“1955 Willy’s Jeep with 44,739 original miles. Quite a collector’s item. The engine number is 4J94860 and the vin number is 5754818451. An overdrive has been added to the drive train. It has the original 4 cylinder motor and runs. The carburetor has been rebuilt including a new accelerator pump. It has new spark plugs, a new battery, and the tires are in good shape. $600. OBO. If the new owner wished to keep the original 4-cylinder motor, he may want to install a new fuel pump.”
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was No Price.
This has potential.
“A friend has a 1959 Willis jeep/ wagon. It in pretty fair shape and seems to be original stock. 2 WD, inline6, single barrel, VERY lite rust barn stored. Have pictures call or text if you have an idea of current value, restored value/ collect ability. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks”
Jerk spotted this unusual CJ-6 with what I assume is a custom bed. It’s another odd ball.
“Google translation of ad;

UPDATE: Was $4200. **SOLD**
(06/28/2013) This looks pretty straight. It’s not entirely stock.
“Current registration and insurance, clear title in hand.
Body- Dented, rusty, some minor repairs done by prior owner. It is very useable as is, actually better than most project jeeps I looked at before buying this one, but needs work to be perfect. Some of the hat channels underneath are rusted and need repaired. This is actually very solid, just want you to know what to expect.
Frame- Solid, no major issues or rust that I have found.
Engine- GPW (ford) 4cyl engine. (this is the military version of the stock motor= not the factory original engine). The GPW is a nice addition depending on your plans, as it it worth more than the stock motor as many people restoring military jeeps would like to have the original style motor. Engine runs good overall, but the exhaust needs to be removed and the heat exchanger flap freed up. This is the flap that re-circulated exhaust air around the intake when the engine is cold to make it run better. It is common for these to seize up and cause the exhaust air to always heat the intake. This causes the gas to get hot in the carb and flood the engine. I had this freed up last year, but it sat over winter and is stuck again. Radiator was rebuilt last year, like new.
A US surfing celebrity called Roxy dropped by Moorea in Tahiti and borrowed Alex’s CJ3A for some fashion shots. I personally think they cropped too much of the jeep, but I guess it is all about the model these days . . . On the bright side, he made a few bucks on the rental 🙂
To Roxy’s credit, she could drive the jeep well. You can see more pictures of Alex’s jeeps (without Roxy) here
Here are some additional photos from the photoshoot
Finally, you can catch a quick glimpse of the jeep racing through the pinapple fields. You’ll have to watch a bunch of women in small bikinis to see it though. I’m sure you’ll all suffer through it just fine.

This builder of this nice looking jeep never got a chance to enjoy it much. The body looks M-38.
“1948 Willy’s Overland Jeep CJ2A. This vehicle was left to my wife after her father passed away and I will describe it and answer questions to the best of my ability. All steel body professionally painted in real John Deere green and yellow, paint is new, original flat head four cylinder motor and overdrive transmission (which I’m told is very hard to find). Steering has been upgraded, brake master cylinder has been upgraded to a dual reservoir, all wiring is new, all brakes are new, brand new super lift soft ride lift kit, brand new shocks, brand new wheels and BFG tires, brand new swing out tire carrier with hitch, brand new upgraded plastic gas tank, LED tail lights, heavy duty front bumper with 8000lb winch, tow bar and mounts, flaming river SS tilt steering column, bucket seats with harnesses in the front, original Jeep rear seat (I’m told these are hard to find also), full roll bar, bimini top, warn brass hubs, optima battery, custom billet rear view mirror and roll bar mounts. He bought the speedometer used and it say 9K on it but the Jeep has less then 50 miles on it since complete rebuild, my father-in-law finished this build and unfortunately got sick and passed away before he could enjoy it. It has been stored in my shop ever since and I start it up once a week and let it idle for an hour or so. I have listed the details the best I can, I have not driven it besides in and out of my shop and around the yard but he drove it around the neighbor once a week. I am sure I am missing some details so please ask and I will do my best to answer.”
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.
Marc spotted this for auction.
“I LOOKED FAR AND WIDE TO FIND A JEEP FC THIS NICE TO RESTORE BUT I HAVE TOO MANY PROJECTS AND I AM TOO OLD TO COMPLETE. IT IS VERY ORIGINAL AND COMPLETE WITH A WARN FRONT PTO DRIVING A 10,000LB RANSEY WINCH. THE BODY IS VERY NICE. I HAVE NOT FOUND ANY RUST OUT ANYWHERE. THE GLASS IS GOOD EXCEPT FOR THE DRIVER DOOR WHICH IS CRACKED. THE TRUCK HAS NOT RUN IN OVER 10 YEARS. THE 4 CYLINDER F HEAD ENGINE DOES TURN. IT HAS LOCKING HUBS. IT HAS 2 15″ SPOKED WHEELS AND 3 ORIGINAL 16″ WHEELS.”
UPDATE: Was listed at $5295.
(08/19/2013) Looks fun.

New clutch and pressure plate. Vehicle has been stored in garage and started a few times a year. Cash payment or will consider trade. Am looking for an ATV 4×4 with winch plow and possible trailer with deal. E-mail me if you want to see additional pictures. If you have something to trade, e-mail me and send pictures! Please note on the picture of the jeep from the front side, the hood is not latched.”
The ‘original tires’ aren’t necessarily ‘correct’, but definitely have value.
“1946 jeep cj2a willys. 4 cyl ford 2000 engine. Original undercarriage, running gear. No rust. Have original military wheels with correct military tires. Has new weber carb. New battery. Needs a little tlc but I just don’t have time. I have many new parts that go with it. Email questions.”
