On our last trip to the East Coast it seems we blew right by a museum in Deer Lodge, Montana, that houses a GPW of some vintage. I ran across a reference to the jeep last night, but couldn’t find a picture until tonight. There also might be a jeep wagon, but I can’t confirm it.
The Montana Auto Museum is located in the Old Montana Prison Complex (1106 Main Street
Deer Lodge, MT 59722), which houses five unique museums inside its historic prison walls. The complex includes the Old Montana Prison, Powell County Museum, Frontier Montana Museum, Yesterday’s Playthings and the Montana Auto Museum. The complex is run by the Powell County Museum and Arts Foundation. One fee covers all five museums.
The “USA Today” once listed the collection, which totals over 100 vehicles, as one of the top ten must-see auto museums in the country. Here’s one ‘non-car’ person who really enjoyed the place.
I found photos of the GPW at Brian DeFree’s Flickr site:

Here are some additional photos:
Shannon Shorg has even more photos, but none of the GPW. Here is a picture of a couple dune buggies though.

“1948 Wills Jeep CJ-2A Commercial version. Sympathetic restoration, using as many original parts as possible, including both front fenders, hood, tailgate, chairs, instrumentation and wheels. Rust free floor. The good . . . great looking unit, painted in the factory original color of prairie green w/ powder coated 16″ yellow wheels mounted with Cooper military tires. Six volt electrical system retained. Rebuilt engine (300 miles). Rebuilt front axle. Fresh carb, water pump, generator, and starter. The bad . . . tranny makes noise. The Jeep is driveable, but this might be an area for the new owner to remember. The ugly . . . there is no ugly, it’s a Jeep! $5,500.00. Local delivery available.”
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $5900.

“Classic flat fender 1953 CJ3A Willys Jeep, been in our family for 30 years. Has been sitting in a shed for the past 20. It ran when it was last parked but hasn’t run for 20 years. Will need to be trailered away as the tires are rotted and there is no battery. In pretty good shape for a classic”
This appears worth a look.
“This is a rare find. A 1948 Willys CJ2A with a Koenig Iron Works custom hard top. I’m told there were only 300 of this model made with this custom top. This Willys does not have an engine. I purchased this from a family that started the restoration process with new tires, wheels and lights.”
This might have potential.
“This is a 1953 M38a-1. It has the original 4 cyinder engine and transmission. Lots of original parts. 24 volt system. Mileage unknown. The Jeep runs but it needs help, I wouldn’t consider it to be in road worthy condition right now but they could be some minor fixes. This is a great little jeep that has been sitting for far to long. It is time for it to have a new owner.”
