“I purchased these tires and wheels on craigslist for my Jeep and they are a great. The problem is they will not fit over my calipers on the front of my 1978 cj5, DAMIT! They fit great on the back yet won’t match anything else I have to run if I only run two on the back. Any way, if you want some bad ass tires for a sand rail or something that two on the back is all you need and they fit it is a great deal. I am asking $500.00 for two and $800.00 for the set of 4. This looks like a nice cage. The body looks in pretty good shape as well. Includes a front clip as well.

I was looking to see if anyone has generated a list of the top 15 things (or list of some kind) you should look at when evaluating the purchase of an older flattie for an upcoming post.
While looking for such a list, I ran across this article by a Willie Worthy (it turns out he wrote a number of tire histories), a writer for Four Wheeler Magazine. He takes a quick look back at how his life has changed and how it has remained the same. One of the more interesting descriptions he provides are the old school paddle tires.
Willie writes, “my first Jeep came with some military nondirectional 6.00-16s that were replaced with some 7.00-16s in a heavy-lugged mud and snow pattern. When I bought my new CJ-5 in the fall of 1962, it came with some 7.50-15s, which I quickly sold. By now, I was into tires and building rims. The tires of choice were some passenger-car 8.20-15 recaps spread out on my homemade 8-inch-wide rims. Later, I, and just about everyone I knew, was using Armstrong’s flotation tires, or similar versions of them that were originally designed for farm implements. Traction didn’t come from the straight grooves running the circumference of the tire but from their ability to conform to an obstacle. Soon we found that cross-grooving made for much better traction. The Pismo dunes, and those at Glamis, were wide open with no restrictions, and by the mid to late ’60s, we needed more traction than these tires would provide. Before the advent of paddle tires, we would cross-groove drag slicks in various patterns and mount them on 12- to 14-inch-wide homemade rims.”
It appears the front end is slightly f&*$ed up. I’m pretty sure those front wheels should be going the same direction. If you have a front end, this one might be worth snatching up as the seller sounds like they might be will to deal to get rid of it. Maybe it’s just a broken tierod? It appears that might even be a terra tire on the front left.

Not a bad price for a non-rusty, full cage, buick v6, running jeep. Might even get it for less. Given the rope that ties the gear shift to the dashboard, I’d say project number one would be fixing the tranny from popping out of gear getting a nicer piece of rope to hold the 2wd in place 🙂

Brian sent in this find. He notes that CJ-5s like this in the midwest are hard to find without being plagued with rust. As Brian note, it’s also likely to have the offset 30 spline axles.

This is a great price on 4 rims for wide tires such as paddle tires. Someone was looking for a set of these but whom … hmmm.
“The are a chrome modular wheel. I was using them on my CJ5. I Had sand paddles mounted on them. These are 15 inch with the 5 on 5.50 (five and a half) bolt pattern. They have no scratches, rust, dents etc. They are in near perfect condition. Since I was using them for sand tires, I was running them with a ten inch wide up front and a twelve inch wide in the rear for the paddles. “
It looks like there’s been a few mods on this CJ-3A, so some type of posi or locker seems possible.

That’s a good looking CJ-5 for only $1500.

I don’t see any obvious issues with this CJ-5. This appears to be a great price. Minor note: the year in the title of the Ad differs from the year in the description.

This CJ-5 has got some great extras for jeeping, including posi front and rear, full cage, dual tanks and more.

This early CJ-5, first year of production, appears very stock and in good shape.

For some reason, this jeepster attracted my attention. I’ve seen other nice jeepsters, but the prices on them are normally much higher.

For $1000, looks like a decent project. Tires and rims look good, body appears pretty good, top looks in good shape.

How to structure the Oil Pump in a buick v6 can be a bit of challenge if you read various web pages. Should you use a high volume oil pump or not (the high volume oil pump is simply larger gears and a spacer to accommodate those gears)? On the 225 v6 the general answer seems to be ‘no’ unless you drill out the oil holes for the middle two main bearing holes (these are smaller than the outer ones according to what I’ve read).
The 1980 and 1981 3.8L v6 engines that I have both came with the high volume pumps. After doing research, I couldn’t get a clear answer on how good these pumps were for these later model engines. So, I turned to TA Performance to see if I could get an answer. They said using the high volume pump was fine, but recommended I use a variable pressure controller (in the pic above, you can see the old spring and nut sitting in front of the new double-nut & spring that’s already installed) and a hardened steel plate that sits underneath the gears to reduce wear (seen in the pic to the right).
I installed everything, but discovered that the gears are too tight, so they don’t spin properly (you can test this by taking out the distributor, sticking a screwdriver into the oil pump drive gear, and turning). Therefore, I’m ordering a set of shims from TA Performance to fix the problem.

This is a great looking CJ-5. I suspect there’s a few additional upgrades on this jeep.

Don’s got a beautiful CJ-3B that he’s clearly spent a great deal of time building. Only a labor of love would produce details as unique as ‘a 4 barrel with a holley from a scout’. If you don’t see this weekly driver around town, then he’s likely in the the hills of Colorado.

It has a built 360, T15/D20, d44/d30 locked in rear, New custom drivelines, 5in of lift (used to be S.O. w/36’s I lowered it back down) 33″ wildcats with spare. 10klb Warn winch with remote, Cd player, Full roll cage, I have the soft top for it, but it needs a little sewing work done (its all there though). It has all the lighting you will ever need, Engine runs at about 80-90psi oil presure. Oversized radiator means it never overheats on the trail. The is an awsome trail jeep. This is one of the stranger CJ-5s I've ever seen. While the cage won't be sold with the jeep, it's not exactly a good advertisement for the kind of custom cage they are offering to make. You gotta see all the pics to really appreciate this one.
