Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. (04/16/2015) This formerly had a diesel engine.
“This is a clean Jeep built in 1965 by Mitsubishi under license by Kaiser Jeep Corp. These are rare, but well made. They have a higher hood. This one has a PTO driven Ramsey winch in front. It has an odd fire 3.8 GM V-6- which means high torque. Runs great! It is also equipped with a mechanical air compressor driven off the engine. Has a CB radio. Good Rubber. Roll bar. Exhaust has shorties. No rust anywhere. This came out of southern AZ. We built a tow bar for it, so it will be ready to tow to the high country and hit the trails. Great Hunting Jeep. Unit is street legal.”

This was my view for much of today. The Grass covered prairies of the Texas panhandle stretch for miles and the roads are straight and fast.
Today was the first day of the Midwest Willys Reunion, so I hope every has a good time there! I do have a few books and t-shirts available through Bob Christy. If you see him and can slow him down for a minute, he’ll help you.
Today’s drive to Amarillo, Texas.
I began today knowing I’d be on the road longer for a longer span of time than I had since the early part of our trip. (Yes honey, read long lonely roads!). Fortunately, there were a few stops and surprises along the way.
Only in Texas would you find a Texas-shaped waffle maker. We saw these at several motels.
The first surprise was west of Wichita Falls. When I saw this CJ-3A, I braked immediately. I *think* it is for sale. It’s got rust. It also has some allstate front hubs.
Not much longer after I saw this 3A, a truck pulling a trailer with an M-38 whizzed past me. I couldn’t pull out my camera in time to capture that one.

The owner of this BBQ restaurant in Grapevine was a retired cop who had never worked in a restaurant before launching his BBQ restaurant. Last fall he had someone build a custom smoker that looks like a train. Here he is explaining how it works. Despite it being the hardest job he’s ever had, he loves running the restaurant.
Ann’s grandfather took a turn for the worse. After I watched her stress eat two bags (small bags) of M&Ms I knew it was time to send her back home for a few days. So, she arrived in Pasco Thursday evening.
After dropping Ann at the airport I left for Bowie, TX.
Prior to her departure, we attempted to accomplish one thing. We wanted to see the cowboy glockspiel in the town of Grapevine. The cowboy glockspiel is a clock tower. At certain times of the day, two automatronic cowboys appear on the tower and engage in a gunfight. I’m told one always dies, but never the same one. The death is chosen at random by a computer.
We arrived in Grapevine at 11:30am, all ready to watch the gunfight unfold. It turned out we arrived as the town was readying itself for their annual beer celebration. So, there was a great deal of hustle and some bustle all through town.
Yes, lots of hustle and bustle in town, but not evident at all in this photo of downtown.
Seth found this rare ad. The Gala rented for $6 a day. Looks to be actually a surrey.
Has plenty of footman loops on the hood. Looks solid.

“For sale is an extremely clean 1948 Willys Jeep CJ2A. This Willys Jeep came from Tucson, Arizona where the original owner purchased it new in 1948 and lived there until he decided to sell it to a gentleman in New Mexico over 10 years ago. After the Jeep came to New Mexico it had an older restoration done back in 2004. Soon after the Jeep was restored the owner drove it, and used it pretty regular so It’s not in show room quality anymore, but it’s still in amazing shape for its age. It has the original and very reliable 4-134 L Head Go-Devil engine that was completely rebuilt and runs excellent, also this Jeep is still running the original 6 Volt electrical system with a brand new battery that works flawlessly.
Lots of diamond plate. Not a bad job on the bed.
“We are moving and have decided to sale this old truck. The truck was running last year but needs the carborator cleaned and some new gas. Not sure if it needs a new carborator or not because it has been setting for over a year. We had it 90% restored a few years back. We also have a 1958 Jeep Willy’s for parts that we will let go with the sale of the 1963. All parts on 1958 can be used on 1963. The 1958 (parts truck) is missing the bed to the truck but has motor. The 1963 (Truck shown in pictures) has it’s original Title and still has the original drive train so top speed is about 45mph. It also has a custom galvanized bed that is specified to the original bed that came on the original truck. The engine is a Super Hurricane 232 flathead 6 cylinder. “My family got into the car dealership business in the early 40’s. Kaiser Willys AMC Jeep Studebaker Nash . My grandpa started the Kaiser Willys dealership in Lisbon, Ohio and had collected cars along the way. My dad took over the dealership in 1988 and stopped selling new vehicles when Chrysler took over. But continued to service old and new cars and take care of customers, Along with selling many of the Jeep parts still in the parts room today.

“1958 Willy’s Jeep Flatbed with lumber rack. Jeep was put away running good approximately 25 years ago. The jeep has a power take off that was used for drilling post holes as well as other duties.
I am selling it for my dad who says that it was referred to as a three wheel drive with posi-track. He always said it could climb a tree. It is all original, appears that someone stole badges from hood and gauge from inside (not sure which). Has good glass. Overall pretty straight and has the expected rust for this model. Asking $1,400 OBO. Clean title.”

“Picked this up the other day, I buy a lot of Jeeps and couldn’t pass up the deal. I intended to use it as a little yard Jeep but I am in the process of moving to a new shop and starting a business in the next couple of months and realize that I do not want to have to move this to the new shop and it is just taking up space now and will be for the foreseeable future.
It has no vin plates, but is an early 50s CJ-3B Willys. I have no title. Most of it is there, engine, trans, tcase, axles. It rolls, but does not run. The engine is seized but might break free with a good soaking. I have some oil down in the cylinders for the last couple of days. Has the Hurricane 4-cyl and the T90 3-spd transmission. Radiator and some parts are missing off of it, but it is a pretty good solid project.”
Might be rough. Can’t tell how bad it is.

Audi Murphy looks taller in person . . .
Today we began our trek northwestward. We got going later than planned, as usual, so I passed up my opportunity to be manscaped at the local barber, Milford’s, that Jason recommended. We really needed to get going so we could beat the rain that was heading our direction from Dallas. So, I remain longhaired.
Our first objective was Whitehouse, Texas, to locate a big hat. Along the way we passed two towns Jason mentioned during our history lesson: Sacul and Reklaw. These two adjacent towns faced the same problem when they applied for a post office. Both original names were taken. So, the town brain trusts decided to spell the names backwards. Thus, Lucas became Sacul and Walker became Reklaw.
When we finally reached Whitehouse it didn’t take long to locate the hat. It’s a big white hat that sits atop a coffee shop. It just might be the largest cowboy hat in Texas! Of course, I had to buy a drink.
Jesse forwarded me these videos for your viewing pleasure. He’s already planning for 2016. You don’t see two FC M-679s butting head often!
