Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Earlier this month Nick put together a video and some more pics that showed him picking up his barn find: the 1951 CJ-3A APU jeep modified by the Valentine Welder and Manufacturing Company. It’s a neat looking rig.
Here’s what Nick wrote: Hidden in a barn since 1962. As of Feb 5th, 2016 this is the only known Jeep of its kind. Valentine Welder purchased frames from Willys Overland, and converted them into what’s called an APU (auxiliary power unit). These were fitted with PTO-driven generators that started early jet aircraft. O.E. Szekely also made APU’s, but this is the only known Valentine and also the only original Navy paint of both companies. After a bunch of research I believe this was used on the USS Wasp (CV-18). I have the original government release paper and maintenance manual. It is truly a museum piece.

It’s got an unusual paint job. The two color glove box on the driver’s side is different also.
“This is a real 1953 Willys NAVY M38A1. This jeep was commissioned to the Concord Naval Weapons Station, Concord CA in 1953 where it served until 1963. It was sold at public auction as surplus in 1963 to a family who lives in Pleasanton CA. It remained with that family for the next 50 years and still retains the original black plates issued in 1963. The jeep is pretty much the way it was issued in 1953 except for a 12-volt conversion, electric wipers, and some gauge upgrades. Custom roll and tow bars have been removed but are included with sale. I purchased the jeep in 2013 from the original family and have used it extensively in the Lake Tahoe area. Additionally, the jeep recently went through a major $4,700.00 servicing by Gene Phebus from Harrah’s Military Museum in Reno. This jeep runs and performs great, no issues, a real collectors piece.
Possible trade for Jeep Wrangler of similar value.”

“Offered here is a Willys civilian jeep that hasn`t run in years and is good for parts or can be fixed up with some work. The engine, transmission, transfer case, front and rear drive shafts, and front differential are all in tact. The radiator is missing.The cab is a Willys Overland aluminum cab. “1952 USMC M38A1 and M100 1/4 ton trailer also a 1952 (delivered 30th month of 1952). So both Jeep and Trailer are Korean War era. Complete with proper full canvas top, sides doors etc , tires etc. Engine rebuilt runs and drives as it should. It’s the original engine. Military tow bar included so you can take it on desert trips. It’s in good shape but not a museum vehicle. It is very collectible and dependable as a driver. The roll and side bars you see in the pictures can be unbolted and removed if desired for that completely original look and feel. This jeep has been by the seller since 1978. He bought it from a friend who had used it several years before that it was “in the service”. Owner selling because it’s been in his garage for several years and other toys have taken priority. To get it ready for new owners it’s been professionally gone through runs as expected. The fuel tank was redone professionally as were the fuel lines. Vehicle has 46000 miles on the clock. Fun to drive a unique vehicle ready for its new owner. Properly registered and insured by caring and careful owner, who has just replaced the parking brake shoes. Would consider separating trailer and truck. The trailer is very rare and its valued by the owner, and those that are on the market at $3,000 just by itself – it is historically significant.”

Partially restored to WWII configuration, there has been a lot of work done and there is still more to make it complete. It has been converted to 12v for easier starting. The engine appears to be a post-war replacement and runs great, transmission has been rebuilt, new brake lines, wiring etc. Email me for a complete list of items that have been installed. All that is needed is body work at this point and a few cosmetics.”

This is listed as a 1953 M-606, but I am not seeing anything that would indicate this is anything but a CJ-3B.

(01/10/2016) This CJ-6 has had a variety of updates. I think it is still apart and not together as shown in the photo (seller includes other photos).
“Up for sale is my beloved project. All of the hard work has been done. Fabrication and 99% of the parts are there. Needs paint, reassembly, and a few other simple things. I just don’t have time and have 2 other Jeep projects and 15 other hobbies. So my CJ6 always takes a back burner. I’m looking for a buyer that will do this Jeep justice and finish it.
