Our first time in Needles, California

Today we drove from Laughlin, Nevada, to Yuma, Arizona (view yesterday’s post here). We began the day brilliantly, with a trip for ‘breakfast’ to Laughlin’s In-N-Out Burger. Ann and her gluten/beef intolerance forced her to spurn a delicious cheeseburger, but she did partake of a few of my fries. I, on the other hand, was quite pleased by my breakfast.

Map of our trip from Laughlin, Nevada, to Yuma, Arizona

We drove north out of Laughlin, crossed the Colorado River, and quickly reached Bullhead City, Arizona. One of our goals was to take a photo with the city’s large tortoise. Our mission was soon accomplished.

2016-03-13-bullheadcity-tortoise2

Next, I wanted to take a few photos of the Colorado River and the casinos of Laughlin across the river. Somehow, my wife thought that meant stepping into the cold river.

1975 CJ-6 Upland, CA **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-6 • TAGS: , , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $9500.

The body was stretched from it’s CJ-6 size, making it not so much rare as it is custom. A neat jeep though. It’s not clear to me, but I think this was a CJ-6 stretched onto a Scrambler chassis?

“One of a kind very rare. Use it like a truck or a Jeep. No smog required. Clean title, pink in hand. Professional Custom stretch CJ8 Scrambler. Factory 304 v8, t18 4 speed stick shift, model 20 t case twin stick, 4.0 low range. Dana44 rear, Detroit locker, 33 spline shafts, rear warn hubs, front Dana 30, ARB air locker, both with 4.88 gears. On board air engine driven compressor. 4″ lift kit, 33” BFG mud tires. Runs and drives excellent. Lots of power. I have full soft top and full soft doors plus half soft top and half doors. It comes with a very nice tow bar and lift jack. Lots of money invested in this jeep. Very easy to tow because all wheels unlock.

This is great jeep to own for jeep enthusiasts. My price is firm. “1975-cj6-renegade-la01 1975-cj6-renegade-la0 1975-cj6-renegade-la1 1975-cj6-renegade-la2

3 CJ-2As & 1 CJ-5 +Parts Canon City, CO **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A, CJ5 This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was Make Offer.

Seller is a little off on the WWII history, but still there is some value here.

“4 Willys jeeps and parts for sale. The Green one is a ’59 CJ5, the engine is not installed and needs to be reassembled. The red and gray Jeeps are ’46s and both have the drive trains installed and are assembled. With very little effort, both of these could be running. The orange one is a ’48 and the engine is not installed. It needs to be assembled, but all the parts to make a running jeep are there. We also have 2 F Head engines and TONS of parts that go to the jeeps. The gray one has a clear title the other threes titles have gone missing some years ago. We are hoping to sell everything together, make us an offer. Would also consider selling individually if the offer is right. These Jeeps were originally made during WWII as military vehicles. This is a great opportunity to own and bring back to life a piece of history. More Pictures available.”

• CATEGORIES: MB This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $2950.

Hasn’t been run in a few years.

“For being 74 years old this old girl is in pretty good shape. This has been in our family for about 45 years has been stored under cover or inside most of it’s life. Sorry to say that it has not been run for the last 6 or 8 years but has been inside a dry storage shed that whole time. Has less then 24,000 miles on it comes with a second set of axles, another window frame and old style gas cans, and one of the original seats. Motor was rebuilt in the 70’s but it only has been used to hunt with and has probably less then 2000 miles on it since the rebuild. Still a six volt system, my father ran an 8 volt tractor battery in it. Usually you find these in a field missing a bunch of stuff, rusted out and missing the motor.”

1949 CJ-3A Orange, CA $500

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Looks like a good parts jeep price.

“For sale here is a 1949 Willy’s Jeep. I inherited it from my dad, who had plans for restoring it. Being a student I do not have the funds to restore it. I don’t know much about it other than it was a barn find from Indiana. So it does have some rust damage to the body. It is a rolling chassis. It was fitted for a small block ford engine and transmission. Both of which are still in the chassis. Comes with original Willy’s hood and tailgate. I have also a small block ford long block for it as well. I believe it is the 302 with a roller cam but I honestly have no idea. But the long block was purchased from a ford salvage yard and my dad intended on putting it in the jeep at some point. I will throw in this motor and whatever other parts I have for the Jeep, included in the asking price.”

2016-03-12-alien-beefjerky-ann-david

Good thing I was there to keep her from getting beamed up! I’d miss my travel partner.

Today we drove from Ely to Laughlin (see Yesterday’s post). We hadn’t planned to go that far, but hotels/motels in Vegas on Saturday night were expensive, while Laughlin was dirt cheap. And, since we’d never been there, we decided this was the opportune time!

2016-03-12-ely-laughlin-map

We drove from Ely to Laughlin.

Our first objective of the day was a visit to the Ward Charcoal ovens. To reach them, we drove south on highway 50, a road that spans the width of Nevada and once called the loneliest road in America by Life Magazine. Just past Ely, we turned onto a dirt road and followed it for ten miles or so. As usual, when we arrived, we had the place to ourselves.

The ovens were constructed in the late 1800s to turn wood into charcoal for fuel in nearby smelters. When coke replaced charcoal, they were then used as, among other things, places to stay for sheep herders and cowboys. Finally, the area was turned into a state park. The ovens were much larger and in better shape than the one’s we’d seen yesterday in Utah.

1954 Wagon “Tender” Garner, NC **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Willys Trucks, Willys Wagons • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $15,000.

A great example of how a “Tender” might have looked had Willys Motors built one, though the bumpers would have been chrome. As we’ve learned, these appear to have been modified wagons. The best way to tell would be to remove the material under the top and look for a welded seam.

“1954 Willys Jeep four wheel drive Super Hurricane straight 6 cylinder motor pick up .Very rare uniside bed sides probably one of very few left in existence. I was told this could be one of very first 1954 willys off assembly line due to 0001 vin number

Frame off restoration including all mechanics and body restored done about 15 years ago but still looks and drives great, some pitting on chrome and a few scratches and chips on paint not perfect but real nice.

At time of restoration 15 years ago
rebuilt motor
rebuilt trans
frame off restored
new paint
new interior
This truck is center of attention wherever it goes , most people have never seen another one”

Ann doesn’t seem to mind being jailed. She’s enjoying her strawberry margarita.

Day three took us from Provo, Utah, to Ely, Nevada (See yesterday’s post here). We spent the night in Provo, because I got a deal on a hotel. The downside was that, in the morning, when I went down to the jeep I witnessed what appeared to be an odd transaction between two normal looking guys who could have been BYU students. Moments after I saw them exchange something in the middle of the parking lot, the police showed up. All this time I thought the best action was in Salt Lake City!!

Ann was trying not to be obvious, hence the blurry photo.

Day 3: Provo to Ely

From Provo, we drove south I-15, until we exited for Delta. For the next few hours we saw some sagebrush, some dirt, some mountains, and some snow. We even saw a couple flatties, too!! And, that’s about it. The Great Basin area is a desolate place and, if you like that kind of space, like my oldest son does, this is a bit of heaven. Here are some pics.
