“Phantom Automobiles” Postcard
Chris was wondering if anyone knows more about why this postcard describes these vehicles as “Phantoms”, especially when the look more like Ford GPs than Bantam prototypes?
CJ-5 Dealer Letter
Toby purchased a 1966 CJ-5 from an original owner and found this letter inside the owners manual. Note the last paragraph (no coverage for squeak and rattles, lol).
10 Unreliable Post 2000 Jeeps
Bill shared this article about some modern-day jeeps you might not want to purchase. I really can’t say how accurate most of this article is, as I’ve never owned or driven any of these.

11 inch brakes with dual reservoir master cylinder, updated steering with a saginaw steering box, new tie rods, etc. All new springs and shocks. Engine was rebuilt 5 years ago and has maybe 1500 miles on it. Rebuilt transmission(T14) , transfer case ,and overdrive. Tires are excellent. Lots of spare parts included.
5:38 rear end so this is not a highway jeep”
1952 M-38 Bennett, CO $7200

https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/d/watkins-1952-willys-jeep-m38-v6/7650404853.html
“This Willys M38 is in excellent condition except for the top.
There is a Clean, Clear Colorado Title.
It is modified to a low miles Buick V6 called the 231 Even Fire.
The clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing are all new as well as the Brass Pilot Bushing in the back of the crankshaft.
It is a running, driving vehicle that needs a few little touch ups but overall it is a very good running machine.
The four shifters are as follows:
Three Speed with Reverse, Overdrive, 4X4 and the short one puts the entire unit in neutral.
You can shift into Overdrive in Every Gear.
All four tires are brand new, the brakes work excellent and the built on Winch is in perfect condition.
It is very fun to drive and it starts every time I have ever needed it.”

1950 CJ-2A Hamilton, MT **SOLD**
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $3900.
(05/23/2023) Listed as a 1947, It’s a 1950 CJ-3A.
“1947 jeep CJ3A. I was told it ran when I bought it but I have haven’t spent the time to get it running. It’s rare to have a Jeep this old with the original paint, etc… What attracted me to this Jeep was the original paint and patina. I had lofty aspirations of restoring it, but it has just sat in my shop for years. It was used in the back country for years as a hunting rig by the original owner and I was told it has packed out a lot of elk. I do have a roll bar for it, work manuals, and a few extra parts. This would make a really good project for someone who loves Jeeps. And it would be an absolute blast to drive around town, or take it into the back country. It is an original Darby, Montana Jeep. And was used extensively off road in the back country for elk hunting expeditions by two friends. $3900 obo. “
1944 MB Stevensville, MT $950
This is pretty rough.
https://missoula.craigslist.org/pts/d/florence-willys-jeep-1944-mb/7647504104.html
“1944 Willys MB military jeep. Not running it’s been sitting since 1979. It has a Studebaker flathead 6cyl in it from a early vintage engine swap. All other running gear is stock. The body is in okay shape for it’s age, the floor boards are pretty good but the two rear tool box bottoms are rusted out. The engine may be good, it does turn over by hand and by jumping the starter. The parts that I know are missing are the Radiator, window glass, headlights, taillights, rear driveshaft and seats. That’s all I know about this jeep, I have never heard it run or worked on it. Bought it last year and decided on another project that has more leg room. My loss your gain. It has no title I will give you a notarized bill of sale. Asking $950. Firm.”

Unclear how much value is here, but the CJ-5 has a ventilating windshield.

2023 Toledo JeepFest
Roger Martin attended this year’s Toledo Jeep Fest this weekend. He brought along his 1947 CJ-2A, an M-677, and his FC Fire Truck. He also took photos of the jeeps at the show, along with some merchandise for sale and a few of the parade.
Roof Palomino Facebook Group
Roger Martin shared the news that a Roof Palomino group exists on Facebook. Given their rarity, I wouldn’t have guess that.

Originally posted May 30, 2023:
Recently, through Facebook, I was made aware of Andy, who is driving his Willys wagon from Argentina to Alaska. I lack many of the details, but I know that by early May Andy had made it all the way to Oregon when his engine finally gave out. Unable to go any farther, he and friends reached out through Facebook to find someone would could help him fix his engine (a couple posts on this FB page).
Richard Darr of Washougal Classic Jeep, near Vancouver, Washington, volunteered to help. While Andy stayed with a friend in Tigard, Oregon, Richard towed the vehicle to his place, diagnosed the problems:
“The engine has some serious issues for sure and the cracks have us spooked as well but we are going to try and breathe life back into this engine to hopefully finish the journey to Alaska. We really don’t know if the cracks happened recently or been there for quite some time. We are going to put a new timing set in and reseal the valves, clean out all the blockages in the cooling ports and new head gasket and top it off with a tune up and see what happens. Drive it around locally a bit to see how it takes. If it seems healthy enough to send Andy on his way then off he goes.. if not.. then we will have to switch gears and come up with a replacement engine or something. Jake and I are happy to do what we can to get Andy to the finish line of his more than 8 year Trek.”
After a couple weeks, Richard and Jake were able to repair the engine enough that Andy decided not to invest in another block. They test drove the wagon recently and are satisfied it is ready. Andy test drove it as well and says it is more powerful than it has been since Bolivia (I can only guess something happened to the engine there?). So, Andy is prepared to take off towards Alaska again.
During the process, did require Richard to spend $400 of his own money (plus all the time). I’m going to send Richard $200 to cover half his expenses. If anyone wants to donate as well, you can send money directly to me through PayPal (Payment@ewillys.com) and I will send Richard an additional check based on any donations (he doesn’t have PayPal). If you have any questions, just email me: d@deilers.com.

1953 M-38A1/CJ-5 Murphy, ID $4700
UPDATE: I missed the CJ-5 body. Ugh. Thanks guys!
Someone has swapped out the dash on this. I’m guessing it’s just a custom dash? It isn’t M-38A1 and doesn’t have a whole for a standard CJ-5 speedometer, though it does have a right side glove box.
