Don Cafe’s 3B in New York City

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Heading to New York City? Well make sure to stop at the southwestern corner of Central Park and visit Don Cafe’s espresso jeep. This is exactly what I asked (ordered?) Tommy and Holly Lansidel, my niece and nephew, who recently visited New York City and took these photos.

Fabio Antonio Arbelaez, one of the people behind Don Cafe and its coffee products, is from Colombia. His great grandfather was the first Arriero (horseman) to cross Andes Mountains. He made the journey with his 60 mules. When he was on the top of the Andes he was amazed by the beautiful green of the valley of Quindio (It looks just like Kona Hawaii). He decided to settle there. He established 22 coffee, Cocoa, sugar cane, plantain and yuca Farms of which Fabio’s family still owns eleven. It has been a family business for over 150 years.

For now, you can find Don Cafe’s jeep at the location below. However, don’t be surprised to see more jeeps serving coffee in New York City and other American cities. You can also keep track of the company on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DonCafeProducts/

Jeeps in the Wild

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Yesterday, while driving through East Wenatchee, Washington, I spotted this unusual looking flattie. I only had my cell phone, so the pic isn’t the best (and had to brave traffic just to get this photo — only got honked at once) 🙂 Based on what I could see from a slightly different angle (which I couldn’t photograph), I think it is a jeep body on a truck chassis:

This snow plow jeep is still parked in the same spot we saw it in 2013:

A couple days ago I saw this nice CJ-3B in Pasco.

Avert Your Eyes to the King!

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Jim writes, “Took my 48 (with 3a windshield) out for a drive in Lovell ME and on the way back to the lake saw Steven King and his Red Telsa come to the only stop sign in town. Immediately shielded my eyes so he wouldn’t cast a spell on Willys. Why, read on ….

King is redoing a house for his daughter who has ms. He is putting a writing studio upstairs in a barn and she will be downstairs so he can be close by. They have multiple homes nearby. It is the same area where he a local driver accidentaly hit him as he was walking down the side of the road. And yes, one year later, the local died when his single wide burned down! Hence one must always avert your eyes when King and his red Telsa is on the road!!”

Jim didn’t get a photo of King’s Tesla, but a photo of his CJ-2A will do just fine!

Mitch Needs Another Perkins Engine

• CATEGORIES: Features, wanted • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

If you’ve been following Mitch Carter on Facebook, you know he’s been doing some great jeeping in his stock diesel-powered CJ-6 (Moab & Black Bear Pass among other places) … at least until he ran into an engine problem.

Now he’s hoping to find a second perkins 4.192 diesel engine. He thinks massey ferguson tractors, forklifts, generators, etc. Even a 4.203 indirect injected one would get him by until i can rebuild the original engine. If you have one, email me at d@ewillys.com or comment below and I’ll get you in touch with him.

I’ve known Mitch since he was a young kid. He does a lot for the PNW jeeping community and is always willing to lend others a hand.

About his engine problem he wrote, “I got crossed up on a rock on the alpine loop, and the fan bit the radiator. We patched it as good as we could which got us off the trail and over one pass to silverton. And this is where i made the mistake of leaving the cap off the radiator so it wouldn’t build pressure…. the gauge only read 200* but it was fooled by hot air and not water. The engine was much hotter and I fear it’s toast. Very little compression, hard to start but will still turn over and run badly while making equally bad noises.”

Royal Tournament Crate-to-Jeep Contest Info

• CATEGORIES: Books, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Does anyone have information on the crate-to-jeep building races held at Royal Tournament shows during the 1950s (probably earlier as well)? The Olyslager’s The JEEP book references such shows (pg 50 & 51 — see below). I have an old jeep club friend who is trying to find out more information about these to share with a veteran’s group.

olyslager-pg50 olyslager-pg51

A slightly different event also occurred during this time using what were called MALT jeeps, specially built jeeps that could be driven into an arena, taken apart, the parts passed through a hole, and reassembled. I discuss the MALT jeeps a little more here.

The MALT events probably evolved into modern counterparts that have been featured in videos like one below, because the modern contests also feature specially built jeeps.

Company Looking for Jeep for Booth in San Antonio

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Education Elements is willing to pay $2500-$3000 for renting a small vintage jeep that is in good looking condition for an event happening in San Antonio October 25-28. Based on my conversation with him a CJ-2A/3A/3B/DJ/or CJ-5 would likely be the best fit.

Education Elements is an education consulting company located in CA that is participating at an event happening in San Antonio TX in October. The company is presenting at 5 sessions and hosting a booth and would like to decorate the booth with an old Jeep (as a symbol of the journey the road trip, the adventure..) The audience of the conference is only educators and district leaders, so no kids to play around 🙂

The car won’t be driven, it will be simply placed indoor at a booth, as decor element. It will be indoor, inside the convention center.

If you’d like to learn more, email Yosr Najjar at yosr@edelements.com.

“Gypsy Rose Lee” Airborne Jeep

• CATEGORIES: Airborne Lightweight Jeeps, Features, Magazine This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The Gypsy Rose Lee Jeep is a stripped down version of the regular jeep for airborne troops (one of a variety developed). Made of “plastic plywood”, it was almost a 1,000lbs lighter than the standard 2,200lb jeep. You might also know the jeep as the MB-L. This article, of which the Gypsy Rose Lee was a part, was published in the December 1947 issue of Willys Overland Unity Magazine.

My Return to the Shoestring Trail w/ the PNW4WDA

2016-07-07-jeeping-marty-tilford2

Marty Tilford is shown with his two four-year-olds, Emerson (left) and Ian (right). Those two love to jeep! That’s Marty’s trail jeep behind them.

This week the PNW4WDA is holding its 27th annual Trail Jamboree. It is a very popular event; tickets go online early each year and sell out within a day or two. I’d never had a chance to attend in past years, but this year Marty Tilford offered to give me a ride over the Shoestring trail.

This was something I couldn’t pass up. This was my 30th anniversary of my last trip over the same trail, an adventure I wrote about in Finding Virginia. So, on Thursday, I ditched my computer (and my wife) and headed for the Yakima area of Washington State to join Marty and his two four-year-olds for a ride over the mountains. I had a great time. Thanks to everyone who made me feel welcome!

Below are some photos of our adventure.

2016-07-07-map

This is a map of our trip though not drawn to scale. It’s also missing a lot of the twists and turns. It’s also missing large rocks and steep inclines. The entire trip was under 50 miles, but took about 8 hours (with a few breaks along the way).

2016-07-07-marty-tilford-jeeping11

Marty (from the Vancouver Four Wheelers) and another club, the Timber Tamers, were the hosts for this 20-jeep trip.

One of our early stops. It didn’t take long to reach about 5,000 feet.

UPDATE: The magazine Guion from Uruguay published a one-page article about the jeep, along with the cover page (shown at the bottom). Oh, what terrible problem that would be!?!?

Eric’s “New” CJ-3A Farm Jeep

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Ted shared this story from last weekend: Sounds like they had a good time!

I’m sure you’ve seen a bunch of Eric’s collection of Willy’s Jeeps at his place up in NY. He is a great friend that I actually met through eWillys and has been buying a bunch of really great PTO related stuff from me over the years. Last weekend he took a trip down to see me with a few of his friends Todd and Todd’s son Conner, He also came to buy a really great little 52 CJ3A Farm Jeep complete with full PTO; complete Monroe three point hitch setup;,a set of Dual Wheel Adapters; front counter weight; Right Angle Drive Drum Pulley; and a couple of Cord Wood Buzz Saws. Super great hanging out with these guys and Im quite sure the Jeep and parts went to a good home.
