UPDATE: Here’s a split ventilating windshield that’s on Christiaan’s South African jeep (mentioned in the comments).

Originally post February 12, 2017: Jim and I were discussing ventilating windshields the other day, but we lacked some overall stats. So, I’m hoping to gather such information under one post. It seems that ventilating windshields were offered in the following variations on the following models:

1. M-38A1, CJ-5, CJ-6, M-606a2, M-606a3 (militarized CJ-5 & 6): Split Window (2 panes) version of the ventilating windshield. Jim’s research has confirmed these windshields were available, at a minimum, on 1958-1961 CJ-5s/6s, Additional photo and anecdotal evidence suggests they were available for longer (perhaps only has export options). These windshields probably were available on M-170s as well. A comment on the M-series forum claimed the Army didn’t order M-38A1s with ventilating windshields, which is probably true, but they may have been an option that was offered none-the-less.
2. CJ-3B, M-606, DJ-3A, Hotchkiss CJ-3B: Single pane windows. They were available as early as 1955 on the DJ-3A (based on a 1955 DJ-3A parts manual) and as late as 1958 on the CJ-3B. Why they were single pane and not dual pane isn’t clear to me. Other international licensees may also have offered the ventilating windshield, such as Mistubishi.
3. MB/CJ-2A: This chart of CJ-2A windshields documents early windshield styles.. Since these are pretty well documented, they are ignored for this discussion.

Some of you might have noticed last night that the website was down. My Bad! You see, I read an article yesterday about a rash of attacks on WordPress installations (eWillys runs on WordPress). To prevent attacks it was recommended that sites get updated to the latest version. Knowing I needed to update the site anyway, I gathered all my technical ability and pushed the magic “update” button.

It took all of ten seconds before the system went down.

So, let’s sum this up. I was updating the site to reduce the chances it would be taken down during an attack only to take down the site myself. Yep, that pretty much tells it all.

The nut of it is that the McDonash Brothers saved my beans once again and got it running late on Friday night. So, just a few updates today. On Sunday I will share with you the Free Lock Hub brochure, all eight pages of it!

UPDATE: I wanted to thank Gustavo for sending me a sheet of lottery tickets.I received the yesterday.  I didn’t win the Costa Rican lottery, but the gift itself is a win! Thanks!

75TH ANNIVERSARY OF ALASKA HIGHWAY INSPIRES
VINTAGE JEEP CARAVAN, ‘ALASKA OR RUST’

— Vintage Jeep Enthusiasts to Drive the Entire Alaska Highway
in ‘Willys’ Jeeps Over Five Day, 1,500 Mile Adventure —

PASCO, WASHINGTON– February 03, 2017– This July, to celebrate its 75th anniversary, a group of travelers from across the United States and Canada will drive the entire Alaska Highway in vintage Jeeps. The trip, dubbed ‘Alaska Or Rust,’ will span five days and cover the nearly 1,500 miles between the famed highway’s start in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and the end at Fairbank, AlaskaA

The group will launch as three separate caravans: one from the East Coast, led by Bill Reiss, one from the Midwest, led by Scott Gilbert, and one from the West Coast, led by David Eilers. On their way to Dawson Creek, each caravan will make scheduled stops where additional travelers can join. Upon arrival at the highway’s entrance, the three groups will merge and convoy together throughout the whole of the Alaska Highway.

“The beauty of this trip is that it isn’t the high-speed, air-conditioned affair that’s become so common on the Alaska Highway,” said Bill Reiss, another of the trip’s organizers. “We’re driving our old, beloved Jeeps—models from the 40s, 50s and 60s—and by doing so, we’re paying homage to the rugged and beautiful story of both the Jeep brand and the Alaska Highway. It’s an adventure for us and a tribute to some incredible history.”

The ‘Alaska or Rust’ caravan has already attracted attention from sponsors like JP Magazine, a favorite periodical of vintage Jeep lovers, which will send a contributor, Traci Clark, to document the journey. Two sponsors have already joined the effort, Allied Jeeps and Overland Diesel. Additional sponsors will be announced shortly.

About the Alaskan Highway:

The Alaska Highway was constructed during World War II for the purpose of connecting the contiguous United States to Alaska across Canada. It begins at the junction with several Canadian highways in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and runs to Delta Junction, Alaska, via Whitehorse, Yukon. Completed in 1942 at a length of nearly 1,500 miles long, the highway was opened to the public in 1948. Legendary for being a rough, challenging drive, the highway proved perfect for showing off the capabilities of early military Jeeps.
