Marty spotted this cool photo from 1959 on the USGS Volcanoes Facebook page. According to the caption, “The M7.3 Hebgen lake earthquake, on the western margin of Yellowstone National Park, occurred on August 17, 1959. This week’s #Yellowstone#CalderaChronicles takes a look back at that spectacular event and it’s impact on Yellowstone and the surrounding area.”
UPDATE: SOLD. Was $750.
This is a unique item that Roger Martin spotted. If you are a CJ-5 collector, you probably don’t own a CJ-5 chassis sporting an original Frank Zamboni-created Model FH!
“This is a 1959 FH model zamboni built by Frank Zamboni himself. The serial number is FH197 less than 20 of these were ever built. It is the high capacity model designed for outdoor ice rinks. It needs a complete restoration it’s built on a Jeep cj5 frame and Jeep 4cyl concerted to propane. It was running and being used in Lake Placid up until about 6 years ago when a new machine was purchased. At that time this one started to be stripped down to restore bc it’s such a fascinating piece of history, but have run out of time to put into it. I am going to put the listing up for 7 days no reasonable offer will be refused”

The crew’s goal today was to reach Sanford, Maine.
They began the day bright and early, as this photo shows. I think we all know that it’s the Gladiator that makes the scene so impressive. They had roughly 8 hours of driving ahead of them, so, literally, they were both mainly driving and Maine’ly driving.
Today, shortly after leaving Bill’s property in Monticello, the Newfoundland crew had to bid adieu to Russ. Due to a family health issue, he felt an obligation to be with his family. We all wish him and his wife Stacey all the best in this difficult time.
After goodbye, the crew lined up for a cool photo:
Then, they began their trek to their destination, a spot near Portland, Maine. I do not keep the location secret so they can avoid the paparazzi; nor are they hoping to avoid all their adoring fans. Instead, I just don’t know! But, when I do, I will share the news! Their route should be close to the one shown below.
Here they are on their trek, a photo taken by Pete. This sure looks a lot like Alaska to me … I wondering they are sneaking back there without me? Guys? Guys … you are breaking up.
At some point, the group pulled into a cozy Walmart late last night. If you’ve never stayed at a Walmart parking lot, they are great, free places to pull in for the night. There’s even a list of which Walmarts don’t support camping, as not all do.
And, as I mentioned to Jim, the pro tip of the day is that the Super Center Walmarts all seem to have a bathroom at the rear of the store that, in my experience, is cleaner and less crowded.

Joe Keefhaver shared this on Facebook. The Patee House Museum in St. Joseph, Missouri, is owned and operated by The Pony Express Historical Association. Inside you’ll find two miniature jeeps on display. According to the signage, the larger 3/4-size jeep was built from a 1950 Crosley Station wagon, while the smaller 1/2-size jeep was all custom.
This looks like a pretty cool place. Check out this exhibit:
I can’t remember who shared this video (my apologies), but it’s nicely produced one. I’m might get a little geeky and quibble with some of the history as presented, but overall it’s a video about a guy who loves his jeep.
This was Rensselaer County’s emergency jeep.

<– Day 1: Newfoundland 2019 (Or Rust) | Day 3 August 4th: Maine’ly Driving Late –>
The Ingram’s and Ogles won the Newfoundland 2019 (Or Rust) trip yesterday by reaching Newfoundland first on Saturday. The problem is, they reached the wrong Newfoundland … I don’t know how they found it, but apparently there’s a Newfoundland, Pennsylvania. Those folks from Paris (Paris, Illinois), weren’t messing around! Well played folks!
After celebrating their achievement, they left for Monticello, New York, where they joined most of the rest of the crew for the first group camp. Below we have Bill’s CJ-5 and trailer from Alaska Or Rust 2017.
Jim and ‘Kelvin’ will be bunking in Jim’s new camo-palace.
Joe’s tent is the same setup he used for Alaska Or Rust.
Russ has got himself a new trailer, with his rebuilt wagon well tested on the drive up to Monticello.
To the left is Roger Martin next to his 2A and on the right is his friend Don Ray, who just purchased that Mitsubishi 3B (he owns two others).
Roger filed this report with pics from his 2019 SouthWest Ohio FC Get-Together last weekend. Roger found himself very busy all weekend, so didn’t get as many photos of from Saturday as he’d hoped.
One of the special events this year was a 60 mile ride in Craig Brockhaus’ tour jeep along the Little Miami River, then down through the gorge at Fort Ancient. Roger notes that it was supposed to be just a short drive to get some ice cream … that’s what happens when Craigs is at the wheel!
This blue FC 170 on the trailer belongs to Willard Brown he bought it this past winter. It has twenty-nine thousand miles on it; the same families have had it since 1975. Previously, it was a water truck at the fairgrounds in Celina, Ohio.
In 2018, the Early Ford V-8 Museum tripled its size. Housed in an original deco-style dealership in Auburn, Indiana, it looks worth a stop on our next trip. We didn’t have time to stop at the old museum when we visited Auburn in 2013, but it sure looks worth a stop now. Anyone been there?

The NF Trip 2019 (Or Rust) | Day 2 Aug 3rd: Newfoundland Found, First Group Camp –>
Russ (at the wagon) and Joe Bee’s CJ-3B are filling up for their meeting with the group.
Over the last couple of days a group of intrepid explorers–tough, thoughtful, highly trained, without fear, able to withstand the worst summer conditions–have set out for the wilds of Newfoundland, Canada. Many of these brave souls participated in the 2017 Alaska Or Rust trip.
Having survived western Canada two years ago, they are ready to join forces once again to explore the wilds of eastern Canada. They are equipped only with the latest techo gadgets, GPS locators, and A/C units in their trailers, along with healthy doses of humor, Some are in classic jeeps and others in modern ones, but all have joined to share in the goal of adventure, friendship, and camaraderie.
This is a rough estimate of the Newfoundland trip. I don’t know what the final route will be.
Together, they’ll be exploring the other worldly area of Newfoundland, places with strange names, such as the unique town of Dildo, where they might just get a photo with Captain Dildo … yes, I kid you not.
Ann and I will not be joining them on this trip, so I’ll do my best to keep folks up-to-date on their travels. In fact, I haven’t been involved in the planning process, so I’ll only be learning where they are going as they travel. I also don’t know who all the participants will be.
Naturally, a trip like this can’t begin without some last minute heroics. This year’s award goes to Joe Bee, who worked his butt off to finish up engine and brake upgrades to Russ Lawton’s Wagon.
Bill Reiss also spent time checking over his Dually CJ-5, which turned out to be a good idea, as he discovered a tire-popper in one of his tires.
Here’s a nicely detailed look at the rebuilding of the Allstate Locking Hubs/aka Husky Hubs.
I was reading one of Ernie Pyle’s books and ran across his description of Baron Rudolph Von Ripper, a man who probably would have fit in with Taratino’s Inglorious Bastards. I did a little research on him. He was a well regarded artist who developed a taste for warfare.
Read about Von Ripper here: https://www.historynet.com/von-ripper-painter-gun.htm (It’s worth a read … he had a fascinating life)
Here’s one of his works that include a jeep:
When Time Magazine named Hitler Man of the Year, the magazine used Von Ripper’s gruesome illustration; Von Ripper had some up-close experience with the SS and was as anti-Nazi as anyone.
Bernd was busy again using his CJ-5 to haul a repaired motor in Austria, then later carried garden material to the dump, while Dan used his jeep to tow his boat to Puget Sound for a ride around the south Sound area.

Dan’s photos:
That is Mount Rainier in the background:
Gary shared this Instagram post by catskill_mtn_customs that demonstrates how to alter a Mitsubishi fender into a CJ-3B style fender.
Given these brochures show a CJ-3A, but only early trucks and wagons, I’d say these brochures are from 1949 or early 1950.

Below is the Initial post of Con-Ferr Catalog, pages 1-19 plus covers.
This post contains 24 pages from an undated Con-Ferr 100-page catalog, one that I’d guess is from 1970.
The Southern California company of Con-Ferr was founded in 1961 by Pete Condos & Frank Ferro (hence the Con-Ferr), though eventually Pete bought out Frank to become sole owner.
Pete had a background in Scouts, while Frank had a background in Jeeps. Their goal was to provide speciality off-road products for both types of vehicles. To that end, not only did they run their parts shop in Burbank, California, they also built custom jeeps like the Convert Cougar and the Super Jeep. Pete’s driver, Bill Haddad, drove Condo’s race jeeps to 18 victories in the 21 races in which he entered.
Pete would go on to co-found the National Off-Road Racing Association (NORRA) in 1966, which produced races like the Baja 1000 and Mint 500. During that time, Condos also produced racing vehicles for other folks, such as off-road racers for Steve McQueen and James Garner.
At the time the catalog was published, Con-Ferr billed itself as America’s largest Off-Road vehicle accessory provider and had more than 44,000 square feet of storage, work, and retail space. It was an authorized dealer of Kaiser Jeep, Toyota Land Cruiser, and Manx.
This year’s Northwest FC Get-Together happens August 3-5th in Olympia, Washington. If you have any questions, contact the folks in the ad. It happens this coming weekend!
Russel shared this video article subtitled in English about the Colombian Yipaos.
Jan posted this to her Facebook page. There is an M-38 located inside the “world’s largest truck stop” in Walcott, IA. We drove by that place and, had I known, we would have stopped and taken pics ourselves (that’s what we get for being in a hurry … grrrr).
This random video of the world’s largest truck stop is from a “wheretheheckarethealbans” video.
I just picked this pin up off of ebay thanks to Maury!
There are two more, though not quite as nice, on eBay right now (you can make an offer on them), from a different seller.
This gives a fairly early look at the parts available for jeeps; it’s hard to say how many images it has.

Tom spotted this unusual bed. It appears it can be ordered.

This is my first time seeing a Perfect Jeep and Parts Company catalog. As best as I can uncover, the company was owned by Bernard S. Forman, who, as owner, copyrighted the name and catalog in 1956. It may have been this Bernie who used to live in Chicago and died last year.
This brochure and the company’s location seems to have been pretty close to Berg’s, so they must have been direct competitors. This brochure has 23 pages and is not in good shape.
