1961 International Harvester Scout Vs. Jeep Booklet

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Documents, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

In March of 1961 it appears that Willys Motors released a 4-page brochure that compared the jeeps vs. the International Harvester Scout. The IH Scout made it’s debut in late 1960, so Willys didn’t waste much time in producing the document in response to the Scout’s release.

In turn, IH didn’t waste time in publishing it’s own comparison with a technical booklet over 40 pages long. I’m not entirely sure for whom this document was intended, engineers? Sales force? Management? For Marketing so it could distill the information for the sales force?

1991 ‘The First 50 Years’ Jeep Press Packet

• CATEGORIES: Bantam-FordGP-WillysMA-EarlyJPs, Documents, Features, Old Images • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Thanks to Maury, I was able to get this 1991 press packet off ebay and shipped for under $10. That’s a good day. It wasn’t clear to me all that was inside, but it turned out to be a heck of a deal. The three-page tri-fold stores photos, old press releases, histories, and a few miscellaneous items.

Here’s the front of the packet:

jeep-pr-packet-04

These are the materials that are stored inside. There are four press releases, fourteen reproduction 8×10 photos, a 40-page AMC/Chrysler history, a jeep history that’s attached to the binder (see upper right corner), one March 1963 Jeep News front-page reproduction and a late 1940s wagon ad reproduction. Just the reproduction of the Willys Quad photo was worth the cost of this package (I’d never gotten around to getting one).jeep-pr-packet-05

I haven’t read this history just yet, but wasn’t in a hurry as I’ve already read this book on AMC’s history:

jeep-pr-packet-06

Here’s how the binder looks when opened. The jeep history starts at the page in the middle.

jeep-pr-packet-07 jeep-pr-packet-08 jeep-pr-packet-09 jeep-pr-packet-10 jeep-pr-packet-11 jeep-pr-packet-12 jeep-pr-packet-13 jeep-pr-packet-14 jeep-pr-packet-15

Under the last page of the jeep history is a holder for all the photos and other documents:

jeep-pr-packet-16

Here are two 1990s press releases (I only took photos of the front pages):

jeep-pr-packet-17

These are two 1980s press releases:

jeep-pr-packet-18

The press release on the left is from early 1942 and covers the changing situation with America’s entry into WWII, while the one on the right is from 1965:

jeep-pr-packet-19

The Jeep News reproduction page from March 1963 is shown on the left. It includes a report on the name change from Willys Motors to Kaiser Jeep and the Willys-Overland Export Corp. to Kaiser Jeep International Corp. The reproduction wagon ad on the right is from 1948 and includes details on which magazine and dates it appeared (I wish I had that database of information!).

October 1943 School at War Bulletin

• CATEGORIES: Documents, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This interesting School at War Bulletin from October of 1943 was preserved by the University of Toledo. Pages five and six of the bulletin include a story about the success of the schools-buying-jeeps program. The war department had set a goal of 10,000 jeeps for US Schools for the year 1942. Each state was given a quota, which almost every state exceeded, resulting in the ‘purchase’ of 39,535 jeeps by schools.

You’ll find posted on eWillys various newspaper articles and photos describing the visits of jeeps and military personnel to schools. What I didn’t know was that not only did the jeeps visit the schools, jeeps also were driven “up steps, down steps, into gymnasiums, onto auditorium stages, and around school corridors. Once school in St. Paul, which “bought” 48 jeeps, reports that one of the versatile cars spent a whole day driving through the halls for inspection by the various classes.”

Here’s a break down of the jeeps purchased by schools during 1942:

1950 Commentary on the State of Willys-Overland Management

• CATEGORIES: Documents, Features, Old News Articles This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.
arthur-gaeth

1958 Photo of Arthur Gaeth: Source

Arthur Gaeth had a career that ranged from being a pre-WWII LDS missionary and tour conductor in what is now the Czech Republic/Slovakia, to reporting on displaced citizens in Europe. In 1946, he reported on the Nuremberg trials. In 1947, he provided more details on his life during a Senate hearing where he encouraged the loosening of travel restrictions in Europe. He subsequently had his own radio broadcast and Washington Correspondent for the Mutual Broadcasting System. In the 1950s he became the “Voice of the Denver Post” and a News Commentator for Denver’s KBTV News.

The reason for the background information on Arthur Gaeth is that In January of 1950 he delivered a scathing review of Willys-Overland’s management, which was printed out in the January 1, 1950, issue of the Arizona Sun. While there’s likely some exaggerations within, it still provides some interesting tidbits, such as Mahoney’s Technical Services, Incorporated, side deal. Also, if the name Empire Securities isn’t familiar to you, I’d suggest reading this 1946 Fortune article.

Kaiser Jeep Automatic Transmission Service Guide

Maury spotted this one. It was on eBay (sold for $17.50). This 1979 guide seems a clever way to diagnose transmission problems.

“”Kaiser Jeep Corporation Automatic Transmission Circular Slide Rule Calculator” by the writers and illustrators of Kaiser Jeep Corporation, Toledo Ohio. No Copyright data; research indicates Kaiser Jeep used Borg-Warner transmissions at least 1970-1972 – probably longer. Here is a guide for use while servicing those transmissions. Kaiser Jeep published the wheel as a Mechanic’s tool, and as an advertising piece, for their dealers selling retail product in that era. Note – the photos you see are of this mechanic’s tool and advertising piece – no ‘Stock Photos’.

The order in which the tests should be made;
The reverse shows the Pressure Levels, where the Transmission selector (gearshift) should be place and what RPM or MPH should be utilized in those tests;
Speeds at which downshifts should be made.
A solid clean circular slide rule – lots of data on the reverse. Direct from a postwar Jeep dealer’s library. No mustiness, No smoke smell. We do try to describe them correctly – We want you back as a customer – hundreds of repeat customers. “

I found this cool and rare brochure for the ill-fated Sierra Dana 20 overdrive on eBay. It’s printed on 8.5″x11″ paper, so the marketing budget must have been tight (as I understand it, working capital was an early issue, which played a part in the demise of the company). Edgar Kaiser’s 1955 Testimony About the Kaiser Willys Merger

• CATEGORIES: Documents, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

In the summer of 1955, Edgar Kaiser Sr. provided testimony to the United State Senate, Subcommitte on Antitrust and Monopoly, regarding the car industry, specifically the history of the  Kaiser Motors Company, it’s post war challenges and how/why it merged with Willys Overland.

There’s lots of interesting details in here, but my takeaway is that Kaiser didn’t believe Willys-Overland was properly leveraging the opportunities of the consumer market for four-wheel-drive vehicles. Moreover, Kaiser had a better dealer network for selling vehicles than Willys-Overland had been able to create.

So, some of this info is useful for understanding the mindset of Kaiser as to the challenges Kaiser Motors faced, before buying the assets of Willys-Overland, and the reasons the company purchased W-0. Given we will be covering the marketing aspect of this time period, it makes more sense why the new Kaiser Willys entity produced so much new literature for the sale of jeeps. Kaiser simply didn’t believe Willys-Overland execs were doing enough to promote jeeps and their capabilities to consumers.

I’ve taken snap shots of the entire testimony, which can also be found online here.
