Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. “For sale is a 1951 CJ3A Willys Jeep. It has been re powered with a period correct Chevy 265 V8 which I believe to be a late 50s motor. Motor has been adapted to the original Jeep three speed transmission and model 18 transfer-case. Motor runs well but could use a tune up and original Rochester carb could use a rebuilding at some point. Choke is a little finicky and I dont think the older carbs gaskets agree with the new gas were burning. Jeep runs ,drives and stops. Shifts through all gears as it should. Continue reading

It doesn’t have a lot of top speed because of the low gear ratio.
These jeeps were geared very low for the military. Top speed is probably about 50 mph.
I owned one several years ago just like it. To get more MPH, I put bigger, taller tires on it, to compensate for the low gear ratio. Trust me, it has ample power to turn bigger tires. Lots of power for a 4 cylinder.

I wouldn’t gamble on that paint being original (get it, Reno … gambling … yeah, kind of a dull jeep night!). There were two green colors offered by W-O in 1953, Willow Green Poly and Woodstock Green Poly. I don’t think this one is either.

“Flat Fendered Jeep CJ-3A. The jeep was a working vehicle on a farm until a several years ago. The- motor went and it was left to the elements. The motor was disassembled and it was also left exposed to the elements. The block is still in it and I have the head. However, I understand the transmission, transfer case, diffs, hubs and steering were all functioning well when it quit. It is a civilian model that is heavily rusted. I was going to do the minimum and put a 225 V6 in it. BUT, I cannot get around to it for a while and my home owners association is doin there crap. So, I would like to get it moved out of here soon. The tires don’t hold air so it will have to be trailer-ed. There is no title. I will be here all weekend, if you want to take a look, can get it moved and want to make me a cash offer, I will not part it. I will be glad -to answer questions by phone if I can, but face to face cash (and you have trailer) is the way I deal.”

“I have a 1951 Willys with a chevy 350 in it. The body has a couple holes from rust in it. The dash has been covered with a plate. Seats need to be re upholstered. Rancho shocks runs great and starts right up. Has exhaust leak coming from header collector. I have the gasket just no spare time. Fresh oil. All lights work. Comes with towbar, spare tire, and vinyl top. Currently on a Non-Op Will trade for a old pre smog car or an aircooled pre 66 VW. ”
