July 1948 Color Jeepster Ad from Newspaper eBay

The seller only wants $10 for this ad. I suspect there aren’t many of these ads out there. It appeared in the July 22, 1948, edition of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

1946? Issue of ‘Jeep’ News

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Many thanks to long-time reader Dave Nelson for sending me this rare copy of ‘Jeep’ News. While there is no date stamp that I could find, there is a reference to an April 1946 study in one of the articles; yet, none of the jeeps pictured has the later 2A grille. So, I’m going to guess this is a summer 1946 document.

Also strange is that this wasn’t published out of Toledo. Instead, the mail address is listed as “Jeep” NEWS, Room 700, 305 East 45th South, New York 17, NY.

Finally, also strange, is that a colorized version of this was also produced and it included a reference to the magazine being Vol 1 No 1. If there was a second ‘Jeep’ News made, I have not seen it. My guess is that this was meant to be an advertising piece for dealerships, but it didn’t pan out, so was pulled after one (or a few) issues.

I published this last year

Evan Gillenwater posted the cover of this magazine to Facebook. He seems to think it came from Furgason’s Motors in La Grande, Oregon. The magazine was found at an antique store in New Hampshire.

Here’s the full issue from Dave:

Sept 1954 Farm Jeep Newspaper Ad

I was surprised to see this ad published as late at September 3, 1954, because it highlights the CJ-3A-based “Farm Jeep” (see halfway down in the ad). It was printed in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The J-Bird Fiberglass Hard Top

This ad took me by surprise. I’ve never heard of the J-Bird Fiberglass hard top made by Stanley Aviation. I wonder if there are any left anywhere? I’m guessing it was made in Colorado given this ad was in the Mile-Hi Jeep Club archives.

I was able to find some information about Stanley Aviation, but nothing related to Snaley Aviation and a jeep top.

October 1953 Worman Hardtop Brochure

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: I finally found an original of this brochure by Laurel Worman, Inc. I was surprised to see it printed as late as October of 1953. It is an 8.5 x 11 inch brochure that folds out to 17 x 11 inches.

Its primary purpose was likely to promote the new Worman hardtop for the CJ-3B. I’m not sure how many of that style of tops sold, but I sure haven’t seen many. Instead, I’ve always wondered if the design was sold or made for Sears, which promoted a similar “Deluxe top”.  Interestingly, this was more than just a top. The brochure highlights that the top was the result of Worman’s 5-year attempt to turn the CJ-3A into a station wagon type vehicle. Given Worman faded quickly after this brochure was made, it seems the company’s goal wasn’t met.

1954 KW 170X CJ-3B Line of Brochures

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE II: Thanks to Barney for sending this version of the Service Station brochure shown just below. It is exactly the same as the brochure below it, except that this one has a form number of WO-1257 (which almost seems added as an after thought and seems a random number, as I can find no other brochures with numbers near it), where as the other brochure lacks any form number. My guess is that this was a transitional brochure around the time Kaiser was buying Willys Overland assets. T

UPDATE: This redone post now shows the four single-page double-sided tri-fold mailers published by the newly established Kaiser Willys marketing team. The first one, “Facts about the Universal ‘Jeep'”, does not have a form number, but the others do. Much of the content is recycled from mailer to mailer.

This Facts About the Universal ‘Jeep’ For Service Stations mailer lacks a form number. It also lacks the KW stamp that is seen on the others. Finally, it labels the f-head as a 72-horsepower engine, while the other mailers have it marked at 75-horsepower. Given the changes, I’d guess this “Facts” brochure was the first one of the four printed:

1960? Kaiser – Willys Motor Sale Service Mailer

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I missed out on this sales and service mailer which sold on eBay for $31.77. Rare, yes, but $31.77? It was too much for small mailer.

Given it touts the Maverick show (though the plug is relegated to the back of the brochure), I suspect this is probably from 1960. There is no form identifier.

March 1962 Ad for Crescent Contest — Jeep Tow Truck Prize

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Here’s an unusual contest prize: a new jeep truck with a tow package that included a Canfield wrecker setup along with a Canfield push plate on the front. This grand prize was awarded to the person would created the best cartoon featuring “Wiry Joe”. The Crescent company was the maker of Wiry Joe automotive wire and cable products. It tried to find out more, but all I could unearth was that someone in Rhode Island won one of the cameras.

The ad is priced at $19.97, while the whole magazine can be purchased for $10.99 (or less).

Unknown Cutlas Selective Hub Model

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Bob shared the photo at the bottom that appeared on a Craigslist Ad for a 1977-J10. It shows what appears to be a Cutlas hub, but it’s a design I don’t have documented. Let’s review the Cutlas Selective Drive Hubs:

The first design was model 100-2 and had no slot:

cutlas-form-104-selective-drive-model100-2-brochure1-lores

Later, Cutlas came out with the slotted form of the hub. Note that the slated knob has a “506-1” part number, suggesting that this whole hub was model 500-1.

cutlas-hub-4

Arguably, the Bulldog was the next iteration of this general design. It too has the slotted knob, but lacks a model number:

cutlas-bulldog-hub1-lores

The hub Bob spotted was on a later model jeep, so maybe Cutlas offered this version of the hub for a short time? It seems to be an further iteration of the Bulldog; unfortunately, I have no brochures that document it.

1963 Brochure For New Gladiator and Wagoneer

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This 1963 one-page double-sided brochure printed in Canada announces the new Wagoneer and Gladiator models. What I found interesting was on the back. The chart shows the electrical setups for all vehicles as of 1963. I was surprised to see that while the Surrey DJ-3A still had the 6 volt battery option, the standard Dispatcher DJ-3A did not. I was surprised to see the FCs also had a 6 volt option still.

It is possible this was unique to Canadian made jeeps, but I can think of no reason that would be the case.
