Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. “Great Korean War vintage 1952 M38 Jeep. This is military surplus, not a CJ-2 civilian model. Very fun to drive, unrestored, all original except for a new gas tank. New batteries, 24v system. Great to run around the farm or put in a parade. Dull OD green, not a shiney finish to attract the enemies’ attention. My wife did not like driving it near as much as I did.”

“I have a 1951 Willys M38 for sale.
I was planning a complete restoration but seem to lack the time to do so. This vehicle is street legal.
It has been in the family for quite a long time. I purchased it from a cousin and they used it primarily on their hunting lease in South Texas. It has spent the last 20 years of its life covered in a barn.
After purchasing it, I purchased & installed 2 new batteries, 5 new tubes & tires, windshield, windshield molding, shifter boots, front blackout lights, fuel pump & OE fuel tank & cap. I overhauled the carburetor & flushed the cooling system. I also purchased (but have yet to install) some new steering components & speedometer cable.
This would be a great vehicle for hunting season and some local driving.

This may be a solid M-38.
“1951 Willys M38A1 military jeep, has hard top (metal), doors, tow bar, bow for soft top (no soft top included). Inspected but not currently registered (expired June 2015). Clean, good tires. Original 4 cylinder motor, converted to 12 Volt. This jeep is fun to drive, but is is very low geared so it is not made for driving on the highway. No power steering or power brakes.”
This is for sale by “Exotic Motors” in Florida. That might explain the price.

“rebuilt in 2008. New crank pistons, muffler, etc., 12 volt alt. original 24 volt wiring, all lights, wipers, & combat light work. Includes ax, shovel, all top bows, door frames, handles, winter canvas doors & side curtains, aircraft seat belts & door straps. Engine has 2000 miles on new Speedo since rebuilt. Jeep runs approx. 6 miles per day for local errands. Runs great.”

Lots of original features, could be returned to original. Data plates, glove box, wide mouth gas tank, flip forward grill, black out lights, lift points, tow loop, light switch, radio port?, shovel indents
5 chrome spoke wheels with excellent BFG a/t radial tires 235/75/15
rancho suspension – springs and shocks
has a bent leaf on passenger front
Has a top in fair shape
windshield is not cracked
has a tow bar for a 2″ ball on the front
set up for 2″ receiver front and rear – great for a cradle winch
Set up 12 volt with an alternater – need wiring
no lights work
original flathead 4 cylinder engine runs and has decent power but smokes a little
original 3 speed transmission and 2 speed transfer case -there is a broken synchro in tran and it won’t go into 3rd gear -this is a very easy trans to work on, rebuild guides and parts easy to find online

there was a title the Vin was wrong, it was transferred to a second buyer he never titled it , it has been purged by the state…
Thus it needs bonded Vin searched and verified

“It is a very correct Nut and Bolt Restoration. The Restoration is now several years ago and it shows some wear here and there. It has a Snorkel and a high Exhaust System and all Components are there for fording. It comes with a Military Radio with a tall Antenna as well as a Canvas Top, side Covers and Doors. Though the Doors show some age, they could be original. Further it has a Siren, Primer Pump, Heater, (not installed), Fire Extinguisher, Grease Pump, Shovel and Axe, as well as a Spare Tire and a 5 Gal. Jerry Can. The Willys starts right away and drives fine. It has the correct 24 Volt System. The Body is original, not a reproduction, it is very straight, solid and without any patch Panels. The Engine, Transmission and Transfer Case are in very good condition. The Brakes have been serviced recently and the Brake Fluid has been replaced with Silicone Fluid. It has been meticulously restored several years ago and now shows signs of usage. It would be a great addition for a Car Collector or Military Memorabilia Collector. The seller notes the jeep only has 5,556 original miles.

“Run good. Has low compression in 1 cylinder. I think it has a stuck valve. Still 24 volt. New gas tank. I have all the top bows but needs canvas. New tires, hoses, belts, ignition parts and exhaust. Carb and fuel pump have been rebuilt. Lost interest and garage space.”
