Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. A big thanks to Chris for surprising me with this purchase from eBay. The post card shows CJ-5 #2, which ferried visitors up to Harney Peak in South Dakota.
UPDATE: I’ve been looking for one of these since I first saw one on eBay in 2013. I scored one earlier this month on eBay. Along with it came the post card below.
The February 1956 issue of Globetrotter featured a short article about using jeeps to take tourists to Harney Peak in South Dakota. You can see more pics and information about Harney Peak jeeps on a couple other posts.
From the 1950s until 1968 visitors to the Black Hills of South Dakota could purchase tickets for a ride in a jeep to Harney Peak. The ride would take visitors up to the CCC built lookout at the top of the peak, the tallest point in the United States east of the Rockies (visitors could also hike or ascend via horseback). You can view various pictures of and from the lookout here. Erosion due to the jeep trail ended the trips by jeep. The area around the peak was also turned into a wilderness area (and one could argue given the road how that might happen, but that’s another a debate for another time), so no vehicles are allowed anymore.

Here are some slides with jeeps currently for sale on eBay. The first one is an unusual tour jeep that I hadn’t seen previously. It’s somewhere at least semi-tropical, based on the upper right tree.
1. Here’s an FC-170 setup as a tour jeep. It appears to include a bed-extension on the back.

5. And, finally, this slide shows a rare yellow DJ-3A used by the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce. I don’t have many vintage photos showing a DJ-3A in the original yellow color (though they do appear on several brochures).
