UPDATE:  Still Available

(04/22/2012) This is a good looking jeep, tough the engine compartment and engine isn’t as nice as the rest of it.

“This 1948 Willys-Overland CJ2AJeep was restored in 2003 using only original equipment. All work was done by a professional mechanic. Parts alone for this restoration exceeded $5000. Everything works! It looks and runs great. Stays in the shop when not being driven & has a Bikini Top. NADA book value for one in “High Retail” condition is $20,500. This Willys comes very close to their definition for that value.
A list of work done including receipts is available.”

This is the second jeep ad today that references the NADA retail value of 20K….DO the NADA guys live in a different world than I do or what? Using their guide to price or value a jeep for tax or insurance purposes is bad enough. The more I hear about NADA pricing the more I think it is just a way for dealers to justify high asking prices, and in no way does it reflect actual value of a vehicle. For 20K a jeep had better be a show winner at a JEEP show. If government agencies are going to use the NADA to determine how much sales tax you need to pay on a vehicle or how large a bond you must buy to do a bonded title, they need to make sure NADA is actually telling the real story, not some pie in the sky number. End of today’s rant. ;’)

I was thinking of what a nice looking Jeep this is, then looked at the photos of the motor…what’s up with restoring everything, then not even touching the motor…drags this thing right down to $8,000!

Bill … I was on the verge of the same kind of rant. As bob notes, It’s a fine jeep, but won’t fetch $12k.

Well guys, Bill, Bob and Dave, I was just looking at this fine little Jeep, thinking 20K was a bit much for it and wondering where NADA comes up with the prices and then saw the engine compartment. Once I saw that, I’m thinking why not detail the entire vehicle. I see a lot of Jeeps that look great on the outside but as soon as you open the hood, BLAH!

Glad we are all thinking the same way!

BTW, it is 99 degrees in Phoenix today. Yesterday it was 105, and fellow Willys guys Jim Sullivan and Greg Bowles and I had our cars at a special invite car show in downtown Phoenix. Our restored and detailed Buick V6 powered 48 Jeepster, Jim’s beautifully restored and detailed 49 4 cylinder Jeepster and Greg’s fully restored and detailed 44 USN GPW. This was a show for 1940’s and earlier vehicles, so Greg’s 51 Willys 2WD wagon couldn’t be there.

Dave, you wouldn’t have been happy in that temperature!!

    Best to you guys!

Colin … sounds like fun! Steve Elkins just forward me a bunch of pictures from Kool Nights in Redding, Ca. I’ll be publishing those tonight. Several wagons and Jeepsters were there.

btw: I love 105 degree days — in the evening after the sun goes down.

Following is from NADA website. Don’t know what to say other than it doesn’t look “close to there definition” for high retail.

    1948 Willys-Overland CJ2A 4×4 Jeep Universal 4/23/2012

    Weight: 2,037

    Original MSRP: $1,262
Low Retail Average Retail High Retail
    TOTAL PRICE $4,925 $11,850 $21,100

Note: Vehicles with low mileage that are in exceptionally good condition and/or include a manufacturer certification can be worth a significantly higher value than the Retail price shown.

    Low Retail Value
This vehicle would be in mechanically functional condition, needing only minor reconditioning. The exterior paint, trim, and interior would show normal wear, needing only minor reconditioning. May also be a deteriorated restoration or a very poor amateur restoration. Most usable “as-is”.

Some of the vehicles in this publication could be considered “Daily Drivers” and are not valued as a classic vehicle. When determining a value for a daily driver, it is recommended that the subscriber use the low retail value. Note: This value does not represent a “parts car”.

    Average Retail Value
This vehicle would be in good condition overall. It could be an older restoration or a well-maintained original vehicle. Completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. A “20-footer”.

    High Retail Value
This vehicle would be in excellent condition overall. It could be a completely restored or an extremely well maintained original vehicle showing very minimal wear. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are not in need of reconditioning. The interior would be in excellent condition. Note: This value does not represent a “100 Point” or “# 1” vehicle *.

    * “100 Point” or “# 1” vehicle is not driven. It would generally be in a museum or transported in an enclosed trailer to concourse judging and car shows. This type of car would be stored in a climate-regulated facility.

What about that spare tire carrier? Looks like a bar fastened at each end through the tailgate chain eyes..

  8. Buz

Actually Iike the spare tire carrier location, I have hit so many trees with the right hand mounted spare on my CJ3A that I’m going to have to do some serious body work to it now. Where else could you mount the tire to keep it out of harms way?

I agree…has anyone seen one like it before? Or do you think it is something that was fabricated for this particular jeep..? I wonder how or if it attaches to the rear cross member..
