Will Parish & Perk Perkins authored a book about their trip around the world in a CJ-5. Anyone familiar with it? The cheapest price I could find was priced at $49.
Abstract: Around the World in a Jeep recounts the 1975 grand plan of Orvis CEO Perk Perkins and his then college roommate, Will Parish, to drive around the world in Will’s beloved red Jeep. Over the next 20 months, Perk, Will, and their trusty Jeep crossed five oceans and seas, exploring 35 countries and covering enough road-miles to circumnavigate the earth twice. In addition to cementing their relationship as lifelong best friends, the trip also generated some 2,000 pages of journal entries, which make up the text of this remarkable volume. Illustrated by stunning full-color photographs taken by Perk, Will, and the people they encountered, this beautifully printed and bound adventure book belongs in the collection of everyone who has a yearning to explore, travel, and discover the richness our world has to offer. 12″ x 9″ hardcover
There are at least two book covers:
Here are a few pics from the book from https://www.influx.co.uk/cars/around-the-world-in-a-jeep/
what happened to the jeep?
huh ? – did the jeep have a PERKINS DIESEL ?
That’s a good question Steve. I’ll see if I can find out.
It’s a fun read. I bought it for my son who graduated from HS and wrote inside to “never stop exploring”. It just happens that I know the authors’ Dad, Pete Parish, as he lives a few miles down the road from me. I never knew the correlation until I read the book.
Thanks for the feedback Andy. I’ll order it.
For info on the Jeep you could probably pick up the phone and call the Orvis company headquarters in Sunderland VT. Perk took over the company and is still running it with his brother.
RACE: That was my thought, though I figured I might be more successful with email given the current state of things.
Hi David, Race, Andy and Steve! I’m Will Parish. I just happened onto this website as I was looking for some of my books to buy so I could give them away since both production runs have sold out. Here are some answers to your questions. The Jeep CJ5 has a Buick V-6. It is now fully restored and is out to pasture in northern Sonoma county and gets driven by me and my sons. Everything still functions except the burglar alarm. But the air horns sound great! And the headers I installed before we left are too noisy for my 70 year-old ears! Glad you enjoyed the book. Happy to answer any question. Also, Andy, what’s you full name? You probably heard that he died in July 2020 at age 100. He still inspires me every day.
Hi Will,
Glad you found the post and thanks for the additional info!
