The 2019 FC Roundup in Phoenix is this weekend. We had planned to do a surprise appearance by flying into the event this year, but dad’s surprise exit shuttered those plans. Since next year is the last year, I have let Ann know that we will be down there no matter what.

I brazenly borrowed these pics from Steve Elkins, who posted about the early arrivals on Facebook.

Such a great event, and incredibly nice people! It’s just across town for me but unfortunately our Military Vehicle Show at Falcon Field is this weekend AND so is the Wings of Freedom (military aircraft and vehicle event) in Marana AZ …plus probably a dozen other cool events taking advantage of the amazing weather here now.
See you next year, Dave :-).

Nice stake body. Not sure but looks like red oak.

Even though this truck won’t see much sun or rain, when building stuff like this if at all possible white oak is the preferred wood.

EXCUSE ME BUT A LOT OF THESE RESTORATIONS ARE INCORRECT — VARNISHED OAK ON THE STAKE BODY ?? — I HAVE 2 WILLYS TRUCK STAKEBODIES AND NOBODY ON EARTH CAN TELL ME WHAT KIND OF WOOD THEY USED TO BUILD THEM — IT WAS DEFINITELY NOT VARNISHED RED PHILLIPINE IRON WOOD !! — IT WAS SOME KIND OF TRASHY WOOD THAT ROTTED AWAY PRETTY QUICK ( HENCE THE LACK OF WILLYS STAKE BODY TRUCKS ROLLING DOWN THE INTERSTATE ) — ONE WOOD THAT DOESNT ROT IS REDWOOD , BUT TODAYS SAPPY 3RD GROWTH REDWOOD IS LIKE BALSA WOOD , OR WORSE ..

The stake bed is mine. Yes, I know that varnished red oak is not “correct” but I had red oak on hand and I like the beauty of the wood. My truck will not get much hard use and it is rarely out in the weather. The floor, however, is Apitong which is a very hard wood typically used for trailer decking. It is extremely durable but certainly not very “pretty”. Don’t be too hard on me; I tried to restore the rest of the truck as close to “correct” or original as I could (with a very low budget).

    Paul,

it looks great. Vernon’s personal preference is for original stake beds (a point he has made multiple times), but the rest of us can appreciate a nicely done stake bed (like yours). 🙂

    See ya next year!

    Paul,

I loved looking over your stake bed and you did a great job for sure. I was wondering what that floor was “Apitong” now I know:)
