“M 170, build date 3/54, serial # 10023.
I purchased this vehicle a few years ago purely to save it from the Vermont elements. When I bought it the engine was lightly stuck, needed brake work and the fuel system was contaminated. This was my first Willys project but I didn’t have a place to get after it, I parked in my shed for a year while a shop was built, I sprayed the underbody with Fluid Film to stop any corrosion until I could get to it. It has lived in a heated shop since the shop was completed. I will describe everything to the best of my abilities, there are many pictures, if I don’t cover something please reach out and I will tell you what I know. Keep in mind I am not an accomplished mechanic nor am I a body man, the good news is that I am fully aware of this fact. I didn’t rip into anything I had no business touching, I had professional help with the carburetor and engine. The best news of all is that I don’t own a welder.
Armatuer restoration 10-15 years ago, still 24 volt.
Fuel system. Tank cleaned and coated inside with Red-Kote, new rubber fuel lines, Bulkhead mounted sediment bowl installed with an inline filter. Professionally rebuilt carburetor. Vacuum/fuel pump untouched.
Engine, head removal, 1 new valve, new rings and gaskets. New Belts and coolant hoses. Radiator removed and flushed. Runs well.
Body, passenger side floor and hat channels need replacing. The passenger floor was replaced but it’s not quite correct, the hat channels on this side are the only ones that need addressing. Previous owner “fixed” some body rust in the usual spots on the sides. See pix. Same with the front fenders. Drivers floor, rear floor, rear tool box all solid. Frame is very good with peeling paint only. Battery box is solid, battery trays are in decent shape with some pinholes discovered after running them through the blast cabinet.
One new B/O light, all other lights work as of this writing.
Brakes: 4 new wheel cylinders, 1 set of new pads, the other set was 90% good, all rubber brake lines replaced. It stops OK but would stop better with the eccentrics adjusted by someone that knew what they were doing.
4 new Firestone NDT tires.
3 litters included. No litter rails in truck, the only thing missing that I know of.
A battery disconnect has been added however this truck went through the winter in my non heated shed with the batteries hooked up and it started in the spring with no jump.
Fuel gauge and amp meter inoperable. New fuel sending unit.
Canvas is in good condition with the exception of a 1/2 inch tear in the drivers seat back. See pix. Top, side curtains and rear are in good condition with clear plastic and all zippers work. No doors.
New front bumper, the old bumper comes with it if you want to see if there are numbers under the paint. Any parts associated with it go with it as well.
New muffler, 1 new u-joint. E-brake restored and works as it should
If you do an internet search for “M170 online registry” you will find a great site that lists all M170s known to exist, this truck is first on the list with serial # 10023. With only 4000+- built and a couple hundred still standing this 98% complete truck with the lowest # known to exist is truly a once in a lifetime find.
This truck is priced at $15,000 but if you don’t have the cash I’ll take an original mid 60’s Pontiac LeMans/GTO or an early Firebird. I like those two as much as I like cash.”
Sold! Thanks for the help!
Congrats and thanks for the update! I’ve updated the post.
