Auchinleck didn’t last long at either position. General Alexander replaced him as Middle East Commander and General Bernard Montgomery was appointed chief of the 8th Army in August 1942. Two months later, Montgomery broke the German Afrika Korps’ back at the Battle of El Alamein, eventually chasing the Germans to Tunisia and expelling them from the African continent by May 1943.
