IMHO, 20K isn’t too far off the value if a real 25,000 mile Commando in this shape. To put one into this condition costs a lot of money….
YES, it costs a lot of money, to restore, but I think you are missing the point; just because you invest a lot of money, doesn’t mean you will get a good return on your investment. I keep stressing, MARKET VALUE DETERMINES SELLING PRICE. I follow current prices on classic vehicles and Jeepster Commandos in near mint new condition listed for this amount of money do not sell, the market for them is just not there. Kaiser stopped production because of this very fact, and that hasn’t changed in today’s market place. Use common sense when restoring a vehicle, spend all the money you want, just don’t expect to get it all back.
I think the difference maker here is that it is original, not restored. They’re only original once, and this one is nice. If I were in the market for a car and had 20k to spend, I would check it out. Look at Chevelles, Camaros, Mustangs, etc. and see what 20k gets you….and you have the same car that everyone else has at your local cruise. Be different- cruise a Commando!
Chevelles, Camaros, Mustangs & muscle cars etc. are in demand and command high prices because of their popularity in prior decades. The Jeepster was never popular, I should know, I was one of the few to buy a new 1967 leftover in February of 1968. Comparing a Jeepster to a Chevelle is like comparing apples & Oranges. Yes I understand personal preference, I wish the seller well, but just like you Dave, I don’t have DEEP POCKETS and rich boys don’t buy Jeepsters.
I had one just like it from Colorado, fun to drive and plenty of power with the V-6. Mine was rust free except for the rocker panels, they are hollow inside and tend to hold all the crud. I can’t tell from the photos how these rockers are.

I don’t know fellas, this is one dang nice jeepster. I’m beginning to think that Jeff’s new price isn’t too far off. Imagine the money it would take to restore one of these to this level. Dave is right, they’re only original once. Mike makes a lot of good points too. There is a lot of value to a “turn key ready” rig. I recently looked hard at a ’69 like this one. Good solid rig to start with and is worthy of a full restore. 4k would probably buy it. Just paint and body work alone would be 4k, not including ones own time for tear down and reassemble. So easy math says your in it for 8k and hope everything else is good to go. Just my thoughts but this rig will probably bring close to that 5 digit mark…hmm, I might need to visit with Jeff…
I’d be very serious on this pretty Jeep… unfortunately I am currently restoring three International Harvester Factory 4×4 trucks so can’t pull the trigger. So Cal is the perfect market for this one. Niels
The 2015 auction in Monterey saw a 25k original mile AMC Gremiln sell for 18 grand. This is way cooler, every bit as clean as you could ever wish for, and a price that’s been dropped to a point where the next buyer can sit on it for a couple years and make money. Wish it were me! I’m too busy sinking all of my money into a wagon. Us folks living in the rust belt will never see cars this clean.
Stick to your guns Jeff and block out the nay-Sayers !!! Really nice original Jeep ,unmolested ,its worth all of what your asking now . The Commando’s are slowly creeping up with the other models of Willys and Willys Jeep in collect ability and value. If it were a Hurst model you be looking at a lot more than what you will get for this one. Kinda like land ,they just don’t make it anymore .

LEW, you are correct, I do come on strong, remember, I grew up in NJ and this is who I am. I don’t B/S people, you can always count on me to tell you exactly what’s on my mind. In a world of “politically correct” definitely not my style. We can agree to dis-agree, and that’s just fine with me. By the way, just curious what the “sold” price was. Which reminds me of the old saying; “Money talks, nobody walks'” Reminds me of another old saying told to me by a salesman at Mide Motors when a brand new 1967 red Jeepster convertible sat on the showroom floor for almost 2 years, and I quote; “There’s an Ass for every car.” On this note I will close and wait for the hate mail… Peace & well being from your favorite NJ wiseguy.
No hate! I just think it’s not 1967 anymore. These things are not easy to find, and like it or not there is this thing thats called sentimentality that drives prices.worth every penny!
