“For Sale:
1945 Authentic Ford GPW Composite military jeep. $4250.00 OBO.
Front crossmember is square, (Ford GPW frame). M2 floor pan / frame has support brace for the M2 mount. Serial numbered correct date of manufacture. The rear storage bins are amazing–not rusted out at all. Latching mechanisms are complete, locks are not. Blackout lights and pivot “work” headlights work as designed. Coming with the Jeep–Many, many spare parts. The Jeep is complete, less the rear seat & emergency brake handle assembly.
L-Head is a Willy’s Go-Devil, it’s been rebuilt, .030. 80+ compression PSI per cylinder (average is +/- 5 psi per cylinder). This is not a “GPW” original motor that would have been in the Jeep when it was assembled at Ford. Although it is an L-head, (flathead), the motor is clearly a later model CJ motor, vintage ’46-1951. [The embossing just in front of the thermostat housing, adjacent to the oil filter housing is flat and blank.]. The Coolant system has been rebuilt, radiator has been rodded out, coolant is crystal clear fresh green coolant. The motor pures & runs at 145 degrees consistent, in 4 x 2, 4 x 4 under load or towing, hot or cold outside. Runs like a champ, Oil PSI runs steady at 40-50–oil is IMMACULATELY CLEAN. No valve tap. No knocking–starts up and runs flawlessly. Picture taken of the motor–the fan is not blurry, it’s running! Check out the oil PSI on the dash, it’s indicating accurately AT IDLE!
Electrical: Most of the wiring is original. Critical cables have all been replaced. The headlight bulbs are 12V, but to my knowledge, the electrical system has not been converted. The generator looks original, as 6V, but the battery does not degrade over time, so it may have actually been rebuilt for 12 volts. This is unknown to us, and the previous owner did not know either.
The Drive line is complete. 4×4 engages and disengages like new. Superwinch front hub upgrade–both hubs work / disengage / engage perfectly. Jeep does have “death wobble” at or above 25 mph; probably tires or bushings or both. Ball joints are solid. Transmission does need to be serviced and/or possibly rebuilt there is a noise coming from the transmission in first gear. I think it’s the emergency brake system, but I am not sure. Brake system needs rebuild. I have spare OEM master cylinder. Those are all the things I know about the jeep that either need repair, rebuild or need servicing.
Sub-components are all correct to the Ford Jeep, “F-script” parts throughout. Frame is stamped “F” script. Composite Jeeps were built and assembled by Ford Motor Car Company with both Ford and Willys Components. This was done because both Ford and Willys could not independently meet the production demands of the Department of Defense at the tail end of WWII. The composite jeeps are truly some of the rarest of the WWII vintage.
Full Disclosure: PLEASE READ: I don’t want any surprises. The pictures of the Jeep make it look better than it really is. The Chassis is solid, but the body tub has got rust and panels that will need replacing. The front side panels were cut out to facilitate ease of getting in and out. This was a common practice when the jeeps went to into civilian population. The rear valance in the tub was cut out and a tail gate installed in it’s place. It looks good, but is NOT original to the Jeep. I have a brand new rear valance panel for the jeep that is the solid, original piece with brackets and cross supports & tail light supports. This was procured from Beachwood Canvas works. This rear panel will go with the jeep at full price. The frame itself does have rust and pitting at the body tub mounts, but it is original and has not been re-worked. At restoration, the frame will probably require attention at these points and the critical stress points. The frame looks excellent front to back, but an angle iron rear bumper has been installed directly on top of the original, which is still there attached to the frame. The rear spare tire mount is NOT original to the Jeep and is welded directly to the right rear quarter panel as shown. It’s a nice job, but it’s NOT original. The front bumper is pretty banged up as shown & had a tow bar assembly welded to it at some point. The original gas tank was removed and another was fabricated in it’s place. It is very cleanly done and works perfectly, but it is NOT original. The seat frames in the jeep are not original and the mounts for the seats are not installed in the jeep. The seat frames that are in the jeep are good, but will need restoration to be original. The driver’s seat does fold forward so you can add gasoline as designed. The Super Winch hubs are great for towing, but they are not original to the jeep. The windshield frame is the shorter military version, and is original to the jeep, but in my humble opinion–the windshield frame is NOT repairable, and these aren’t cheap. All four rims and tires are 15″ wheels and tires. All the tires are dry-rotted and not good for anything but driving around our pasture. The wheels and tires are NOT original to the jeep. This jeep would have had 16″ split rims when it was produced. The ignition was upgraded to a civilian key-turn. The Jeep comes with a pair of matching keys that do start the Jeep.
The Jeep you see pictured is more than an excellent, solid candidate for restoration–it runs and drives excellent.
First $4,250 OBO CASH takes it. I’m looking for a clean titled 4 x 4 3/4T Duramax with an Allison. Will also consider a 4 x 2 1 Ton ’01-’02 Duramax chassis in trade. No fords, no dodges. I need a good dependable work truck. Clean, functioning, accurate serial-numbered home protection and hunting devices considered for partial trades with cash. A snap on bottom and top box with or without tools would also be considered in partial trade with cash.
This Jeep is not titled and I do not have a title for the Jeep, but was last running/driving on public highways in 1995; (showed on the old plate stickers). She has been in a warehouse and on our ranch ever since.
Bring your trailer and she’ll drive right up on it.
No more pictures until we talk, voice talk, like olden times. After that I’ll send you any more detailed pictures that you need to see to make a decision.
Won’t take offers less than my asking price over the phone–show up in person with cash in your hand and I’ll work with you.
Weekends work best for me.
*If you’re reading this add, the jeep is still for sale. I’ve got a very nice 15′ tandem axle trailer with 1/4″ 2 x 2″ angle / plate steel ramps that will pull this jeep perfectly for $1450.00. It currently has farm plates on it and it does have a clear blue texas title, in MY name. I will deal a little if you want both.
I will deliver anywhere in Texas for gas and mileage, provided the Jeep is paid for in full, in advance, & you’ve come here, seen it, driven it and know exactly what you’re getting into. These Authentic military jeeps have a distinct advantage over their civilian counter parts: They can be registered as historical vehicles. They also hold their value incredibly well. A fully restored Ford GPW can bring in as much as $17,000.00 and up.
Low ball offers will not be responded to; and low ball offers on the phone will be hung up on. Please, seriously interested buyer calls ONLY.
NOTE: I WILL NOT SELL ANY OF THE SPARE PARTS I HAVE ON HAND SEPARATELY. I WILL NOT SELL ANY PARTS OFF OF THIS JEEP. IT’S ALL TOGETHER.”
Definitely a detailed ad, appears seller is sincere and not trying to fool anyone. This probably come from prior experience in selling jeeps!
