UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay. According to Bill this has the Mark III Tuxedo Park package.
Jim spotted this nice looking CJ-5. It looks like it has a Tuxedo Park Package and appears to have the Indian Ceramic steering wheel.
“From high up in the mountains of central Colorado comes a very well preserved, 1964 CJ5 that is largely unmolested. The reason I say largely unmolested is that other than a carburetor change to aid the drivability at altitude, this jeep is all original from factory paint to the factory upholstery. The original Carter Carburetor is included, along with the air cleaner ducting should the buyer wish to return it to its stock configuration. Carter did offer a “High Altitude” kit for the “Hurricane 4″but it was rated rated at 4000 ft above sea level, but when you consider that this jeep lives at 8000 ft, and a ride into the high country may find it 13,000’+, you see the Carter solution is not viable. Re-jet you say? Carter used metering rods instead of jets, so that’s why it has the very popular Weber Progressive 2 bbl. conversion which allows re-jetting to accommodate the thin air.
This Jeep is also equipped with a “Ramsey” 8000 lb winch that is fully functional and includes the remote control pendant. The 1 year old Goodyear Wrangler tires on the ground have about 1200 miles on them and the spare has never been on the ground. The Jeep runs and drives as it should, good exhaust, 4 wheel hi/lo functions properly, and the lock out hubs are working as they should. A tow bar is included should the buyer wish to flat tow it to its’ new home.
I’ve driven this classic in and around Buena Vista, Colorado for the past three years, and before that, a Texas family who owned a summer home in Steamboat Springs used it during their annual month long visit to Colorado for the past 25 years. Other than that, it has sat in a garage the rest of the time as it does now.”
That is a lot of tux parts. Could that be a mark 3 especially with the Indian ceramic colors
definitely a Mk III Tuxedo Park. Very cool.
David you were recently within 40 miles or so of this JEEP, Buena Vista is in Colorado not Ca., and we know you were in Alma and Fairplay.
I knew this was in Colorado. I don’t know why I did CA. I’ve been to Buena Vista a couple times. Seemed like a nice place!
David,
I’m interested in bidding on this jeep, but wanted to see if you or any of the members had any comments on the completeness of this old gal? I hadn’t seen very many with those roll bars and wondered about those and it is missing hub caps, right? Are those even the right wheels to attach the hub caps if I get eventually? I noticed the spare appears to have the slotted wheel, but is different from the others.
Any advice from the members is much appreciated. Bidding ends tomorrow! Thanks,
Mike
Mike-
The roll bar is aftermarket, there was no factory bar until the 70’s. The wagon wheels are also aftermarket, and the ’64 Tuxedo Park MkIII didn’t come with hubcaps. 1965+ MkIV’s would have had them.
This one has the Indian Ceramic seat frame and steering column, white grill, and most of the chrome pieces are there. So it’s pretty complete. The seat covers appear aftermarket, but that’s an easy fix.
Lots of pics of these on the internet or earlyCJ5 page. Good luck with it if/when you get it bought!

Update: This Jeep is Sold!! I bought it. Closed on Ebay for $6,300, not a bad deal from what I’ve been seeing (I think?). Anyways, I did have a final question for you guys. This is listed as a 1964 Jeep with a 4 Cylinder engine. However, the VIN # goes as follows: 5754 816XXX.
From what I’ve seen online for VIN number research, the 6 (seventh digit) denotes a V6 225 engine. Should I be concerned or are these discrepancies not that uncommon? Also, it appears to have a tuxedo park package added to it, but the VIN does not denote that. Should it?
Thanks again for all the expertise!
Mike
That’s a 4-cyl VIN, the jeep is correct. That online VIN info is for later model years.
Bill
The serial number should be 57548 16XXXX (You are missing an ‘X’ as the end of your number you listed)
Here is a list of serial numbers
Year January February March April May June July August Sept. Oct. Nov. Dec.
1963 156384 156935 157350 158065 158725 159072 159671 161020 161680 163529 165388 167060
1964 168803 170823 171947 172629 173167 174005 174909 175722 177704 179356 181460 183296
So, depending on the remainder of your number it was likely made between August 1963 and February of 1964. Does that make sense?
– Dave
btw, I think that’s a fine price. It look like a good jeep. There aren’t many of these Indian Ceramic’s around anymore.
That does make sense! And you were totally spot on – I did leave out an X. I was just testing you!
According to your helpful chart mine was manufactured in 1963 between July and August, as it is greater than 159671 and less than 161020. So it is listed as a 1964, but it is actually a 1963 then?
If that’s not right please correct me, as I will make note of this conversation if I ever were to sell the Jeep. (not likely)
Yes, technically it is a 1963, having been manufactured in that year. However, often jeeps (and other vehicles) were not sold during the year they were produced. This has led to many jeeps being titled for they year they sold rather than for the year they were manufactured.
For example, I’ve run across MANY 1948 CJ-2As that were titled 1949 CJ-2As, even though they were manufactured in 1948. This happened with other models and years as well. So, it isn’t an uncommon issue.
Hey David,
I wasn’t sure how to get ahold of you, so I figured I’d try the comments section again here. I’ve got another question on another Jeep that doesn’t seem to fit into the production numbers that you gave me. It looks just like this Jeep, but must be earlier. The serial number is 57548 150526… It looks to be pre-1962 based on the numbers you posted above. What year would that one be? Also, what years was the Mark III definitely produced? I would say with 90% certainty that it is in fact a Mark III, but appears to be much earlier based on the serial number. Any help is appreciated.
Mike
Thanks for getting back to me. Is there any “Jeep Official” chart that shows these production numbers? I guess the issue is, what do you do if you have this Jeep but it’s titled 1957. Obviously not correct, what can you use as a proof to get it changed to reflect the correct year?
