UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $3000.
This good looking DJ-3A had been repowered with a Volvo engine. The wheels are a stock size.
“1964 Jeep surrey DJ3A in perfect condition, kept inside, original paint , last year and month made for this model one of the last 10 special order from the factory as a pizza delivery Jeep, the bed “inside” the back is 2 inches wider inside than a stock 3A but the rest is the same as the 4×4, has special order tag, very rare , 12 volt , everything works, original CA plates, new brakes , 4 new mud and snow LT tires, this DJ can go 65 on the freeway, has tow bar and it has a 1.6 liter B16 Volvo duel carburetor sports car motor and Volvo 4 speed transmission professionally installed , clear title, no smog required ever, call with questions”
Is that riding on 4 donut spares?
Sold on July 11 I am told
Bill, some later model DJ-3As were equipped with the 13″ wheels. 13″ or 15″
& 16″were the factory sizes at different times. While 14″ wheels have been found on DJs, there seems to be no evidence any were issued from the factory. Even without the original motor, this is a pretty neat find, especially given its history as a pizza delivery vehicle. That commercial delivery market was exactly what these models were designed to fill.Paul, thanks for the update!
Let me qualify my previous statement. I need to verify that 16″ four hole rims were ever used (saw it on a different comment). A reader pointed out to me that may be the case.
Okay, across all models through 1971 it appears the only rims issues were 16″, 15″ or 13″. That list includes both four hole and five hole rims. DJs were only issued with 15″ or 13″ four hole rims.
Stock or not, those rims are just WRONG. I’m actually surprised it sold so quickly… apparently to someone who saw all the remaining value (straight, rot-free, complete-ish). Wish they’d have posted an engine pic.
They are odd looking with the 13″ wheels. This one was in pretty good shape which I believe is why it sold quickly.
To me this falls in the same category of the pink surrey jeeps. Who would ever see any use for that kind of vehicle? 13″ wheels? Evidently plenty of people with alternative tastes because they did sell. What do I know about taste? Obviously not much.
I just can’t imagine “running down the highway” in this!
Im with you Lew on this one !!! I passed on a bunch of these as a kid all at the same gas station . Had I known then what I know now I would have scooped em all up sold em for stupid money and replaced em with 2as ,3as or anything with flat fenders and four wheel drive .
Summit has brand new 15 inch rims that will fit these DJ’s. A few years ago good friend of mine bought and mounted a set.
Trying to remember off the top of my head they are wider and I’m not sure or not if the hubcaps will fit.
It’s been a long time since I saw them.
It was lucky for me that he wanted wider tires than stock because I needed stock rims for mine and was able to acquire his.
I only ran my 56 down the road a few times I started a ground up restoration but that was fun. The two wheel drive will take you down the road faster and with less wear on the drive train over longer distances than the lower geared four wheel drives.
I did add a overdrive T96, a little tricky I might add, I expect that will likely make mine faster than what I want to drive but at least the capability will be there.
There has been another one of these “pizza delivery jeeps” found. Here is the link…. http://www.ewillys.com/2018/11/03/1964-dj-3a-cedar-falls-ia-6500/comment-page-1/#comment-2154725
