The buy it now price on this jeep is 12k. Pics show a nice job done. When a rig gets this high of price tag, one needs to look hard when the owner says all original. Just a handful of things. Tailgate is 2 gens too new. Hood should be stamped willys for this year. Should have small clear glass park lights and no reverse lights, although they are a good idea. I’m a little concerned that there is no defroster knock out on the dash. Maybe it was missing and the hole got filled. There are supposed to be a small tab, on each side, right behind the fender steps. These can be easily “lost” if this area had rust out. Needs the “big” horn button on steering wheel. Engine bay looks real good, would like to see original or more accurate air intake hose. As far as decals, air breather one goes on top and drop the “jeep” on the tailgate. Nice details like a spare tire dampener and the “always awesome” venting windshield. All in all, a very nice jeep and nothing to hard to correct. A personal inspection would be the cherry on top. Have I mentioned I love late gen 3b’s. Since this person has 2 igthus’ and they point the right way, all is forgiven and time to move on… nice little jeep.

I don’t think I’ve ever noticed this type of venting windshield before… very cool.
Todd, what are “igthus”? …and thanks for a great detail itemization: makes me realize how little I still know about early jeeps even after a few years of this obsession.

Good morning Joe, those venting windshields are pretty rare on the 3b’s. Igthus is the Christian “fish” symbol. It’s origin dates back to the dark ages when Christians were killed just for claiming they were people of god. So, the story goes that if you were walking and met up with another person, the Christian would draw one half of that symbol on the dirt and if the other knew what you were doing, they would complete the other half without speaking a word, therefore making the symbol that we know today. I think it kind of evolved into a fish over time. This is to the best of my knowledge, but just like jeep details, I am still in school.

Todd, good commentary. Nice jeep, maybe a bit high on the price scale, but most stuff on this is easily fixable.

Adding to the ‘fish’ story, is this nearly useless, but interest factoid. I read it in a great book about initialisms, acronyms and backronyms that attempted to debunk the false roots of common myths (such as the history of SOS — yes, this passes as entertainment to me).

“chthys (Greek: ἰχθύς; also transliterated and Latinized as ichthys, icthus, ichthus or ikhthus; ichthus, spelled: Iota Chi Theta Upsilon Sigma), is the Ancient and Classical Greek word for “fish.” In English it refers to a symbol consisting of two intersecting arcs, the ends of the right side extending beyond the meeting point so as to resemble the profile of a fish, said to have been used by early Christians as a secret symbol and now known colloquially as the “Jesus fish.” Ichthus (ΙΧΘΥΣ, Greek for fish) is an acronym or backronym of “Jesus Christ, Son Of God, Saviour (Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, Θεοῦ Υἱός, Σωτήρ).”

btw, does anyone know if stock 1959 CJ-3Bs came with electric or vacuum wipers?

  7. Idaho Todd

Dave, as far as I know, factory wipers are vaccum. Or you could spend $3-6 and get optional electric. I’ll do some more homework too.

  8. Desert Jim

Dave, great question. I have never seen a 59 with “factory” electric wipers. I have only seen the vacuum wipers. I have had three 3B’s a 58,59,and a 60 and they were all originally vacuum. I hope Todd can find out some info on this.

  9. Idaho Todd

I’m desperately looking for a specific piece of info I read eads ago when I was restoring my first cj3b. It was an actual invoice from a late gen 3b that had a cost break down of the electric wipers from the factory. As I do more and more learning about my renegade 1 and 2’s, I’m finding that a lot of options were added at a dealer level. This may be the case with electric wipers on a 3b. I’m still searching though…or I may be full of hot air! I’ll get back with you…

  10. Larry

Does anyone know where I can get a tailgate with Jeep instead of Willys? I need one like this CJ has. Thanks

  11. Idaho Todd

Larry, there was one for sale in the Bozeman MT cl. It was with some wheels but the ad just expired. It was the second or third time it was relisted so you might keep a look out…

  12. larry

Thanks for the help. I see them at Walcks. You used to be able to only find “blank” and Willys. You guys have a lot of knowledge. I enjoy reading your coments. Thanks again.
